“Fy
er, fyer!” is a new
setting of the
Renaissance madrigal text
by Thomas Morley, first
made famous by
Monteverdi's setting. The
piece is an installment
in Brian Sidders's
long-term project of
re-setting the texts of
historic choral works.
Polychords and changing
meters depict the
combination of excitement
and fear that comes with
the flames of new love. A
perfect choice for
advanced ensembles who
want a fresh take on a
classic choral text!

Prayer is
one of the composer's
most original and
sophisticated works. The
typical African-American
church service seems to
be a source for this
piece with its interplay
of sections and colors,
yet the work in form and
rhythmic choices is
clearly 'classical' and
never breaks out into
easy imitations of, for
example, gospel music.The
work opens with the choir
singing the spiritual 'My
Lord, What a Mornin'' in
octaves, sung flat-out a
cappella, as might happen
in church. The
instrumental section
following this opening
feels very much like a
thoughtful response by
the congregation.
Instruments seem to
behave like individual
churchgoers, colorfully
dressed and answering
various episodes with
individual thoughts. As
for any fears that the
mighty organ might drown
out the proceedings,
Singleton puts that to
rest by employing it
almost like another choir
or section of the choir.
The trumpet soloist does
not blast us into heaven,
it tends to sing and, we
find out later, is
preparing us for the
spiritual 'Where Shall I
Be When the Firs' Trumpet
Soun'?' Even the tenor
soloist behaves much like
just another (but still
important) instrument.The
composer has chosen to
not only feature
spirituals, but also to
set a poetic text called
A Christian Prayer, whose
main message, almost like
some modern-day Kyrie,
calls out 'save us teach
us ' and extols the
importance of humility
and the defeat of
violence. Singleton has
always been a composer
who has simultaneously
answered the call to
carry out what he feels
is his duty to his fellow
humans while using the
finest of his art to do
so, and Prayer finds him
at the top of his game.-

Rude
rs writes: NIGHTSHADE is
an instrumental
dark-room, a grave-yard
of low-pitched,
tight-knitted, crawling
chords sliced asunder by
the cold extremely high
positioned movements of
the oboe and violin in
particular: tones
sustained to
near-immobility and then
scared into startling
velocity, like geckoes on
a Southern garden wall.
Shades in the night are
pale and gloomy
phenomenons to behold;
treacherous beauties in
the mighty realm of
invisibility and
blackness. Belladonna
(beautiful lady) is the
morbid christening of
that fearsome variety of
flora: the deadly
nightshade. The piece is,
on one hand, a study in
extreme sonorities; the
infrequently used
contrabass clarinet is
being employed along with
the contra-bassoon,
forming the ultra-low
foundation of the score
and the bottom-register
of the French horn and
the trombone is set
against the serene
clarity of high violin
and oboe. On the other
hand, the piece is a
tone-poem of sorts, on
the various associations
as they form within the
mind of the individual
listener when confronted
with the very word
NIGHTSHADE. Personally, I
come to think of pale
moonlight, tombstones,
the compelling as well as
frightening spell of a
dark forest. A Study in
black the piece has been
called.

On the
occasion of the
quincentenary of
Reformation Day in 2017,
the composer Enjott
Schneider thoroughly
studied Martin Luther the
individual and all his
contradictions. The
result is a brilliant,
demanding organ symphony
which is perfect for
concerts on the subject
of Reformation and Martin
Luther.The composer
describes the five
movements of the symphony
as follows:'1st
movement:Wir glauben all
an einen Gott with its
quintuplet-like beginning
is very Gregorian in
style, outlining the
range of Lutheran
emotionalism between the
Middle Ages and the
modern era. The
irrationality of faith
ultimately has priority
over any thought and
evidence. At the
beginning of the
movement, sounds of
knocking on wood remind
of the nailing of the
Ninety-Five Theses to the
doors of churches in
Wittenberg. The chorale
melody sometimes hides
with an almost rough
medieval saltarello,
referring to Luther's
robustness and vitality
with which he knew to
carry away even common
people.2nd movement:In
1530, the electoral
prince of Saxony
presented to Luther at
Coburg Castle the golden
signet ring with the
Luther rose which became
the symbol of his
theology of grace. A
white heart with black
cross is fixed on a
five-petalled rose. To
him, white is the colour
of angels and ghosts,
black stands for the pain
of crucification: The
just shall live by faith,
but by faith in the
Crucified. But the fact
that the rose and the
heart are the dominating
symbols shows how
Catholic Marian piety
remained an ingredient of
Luther's spirituality
throughout his life. In
line with the dominant
five-petal structure of
the rose, this movement
was composed, to a large
extent, in accordance
with the floating,
lyrical rhythm in 5/8
time.3rd movement:The
omnipresence of death and
dying - from the plague
and war to the
never-ending dangers of
daily life - was an
essential part of the
world view of that time.
Fears ensued that might
heighten into the
grotesque, e.g. in the
pictures of Hieronymus
Bosch. The Danse macabre
was a popular motif in
those years. Luther's
chorale Mitten wir im
Leben sind / mit dem Tod
umfangen from 1524
(Enchiridion from Erfurt)
is based on the Gregorian
chant Media vita in morte
sumus created in France
around 750 and, with its
idea of transience,
inspired a simplistic
air.4th movement:The
famous confession
delivered at the Diet of
Worms in 1521, I stand
here and can say no more.
God help me. Amen, are
not Luther's words but
the version later used as
text for a pamphlet.
However, it represents
quite plainly the
straightforwardness and
inevitability of his
mission. Musically, it
was made into a perpetuum
mobile, i.e. a dogged,
ostinato and never-ending
musical air.5th
movement:The Mighty
Fortress, on the other
hand, is one of the great
symbols of Martin Luther
which, with its shining C
major key, embodies the
Protestant ideology and
willful nature of the
Reformation unlike any
other song. Heinrich
Heine called it the
Marseille anthem of the
Reformation, Friedrich
Engels the Marseillaise
of the Peasants' Wars.
This disputability is not
thought through to the
end but rather
interrupted: With a
jubilant birdcall version
of the melody, the finale
shows a rather
chamber-music-like side
of the ideals of freedom
of Christians.'.

As far back
as I can remember, I have
always been fascinated
with fairy tales: with
their archetypal
characters and set
phrases like'Once upon a
time...'and'...they all
lived happily ever
after'. Fairy tales were
however also a source of
unrest for me as a
seismograph of mankinds
underlying primal fears
and desires. So as a
performer and composer I
have always felt that
Robert Schumann's
Marchenerzahlungen [Fairy
Tales] (scored for the
same instrumentation as
my own composition) was a
disjointed, complex
contemporary work -
despite the innocence and
naivety of its initial
appearance. I therefore
do not intend my own Es
war einmal (Once upon a
time...)to be a mere
sentimental, nostalgic
flight into the distant
past, but as a naive and
fantastical alternative
concept to our genuine
world with all its
upheavals. Jorg
Widmann.

Weake
ned by a series of
chronic illnesses and
aware of his impending
death, Shostakovich looks
back on his life in
Symphony No.15 inA major,
op.141. The work opens
with cheerful
reminiscences from his
youth, featuring
quotations from his early
works and allusions to
Rossini. But already by
the second movement, a
funeral march rich with
self-quotation, the mood
changes. In the cantabile
movement which follows,
one hears the murmuring
ghosts of the past. With
echoes of Richard Wagner,
the eerie finale
ultimately instructs the

An
essential feature of
attitudes prevailing in
the days of Luther was
the ubiquitous concern
with death and dying,
assailed by plague, wars
and the never-ending
dangers of daily life.
The associated fears
sometimes escalated to
the grotesque, as in
paintings by Hieronymus
Bosch, and the 'dance of
death' was a popular
motif in those years.
Luther's chorale of 1524
In the very midst of life
/ we see death all around
us (the Erfurt
Enchiridion) is based on
the Gregorian Media vita
in morte sumus that
emerged in France in
about 750, evoking
thoughts of mortality in
its outline form.

A vigorous
composition which is full
of exciting melodies and
vibrant rhythms. Starting
out in a fast 6/8, your
students and audiences
will feel that they are
riding along with
fearless Stormchasers who
are chasing a tornado or
hurricane. The calm at
the eye of the storm is
depicted with a beautiful
yet ominous sounding
section that gives your
flute section and flute
soloist a chance to
shine. An outstanding
choice for concert or
festival performances,
this unique selection
will challenge mid-level
bands. Outstanding!

Grant's poignant and
haunting contemporary
Christmas classic has
been set for 3-7 octaves
of handbells and optional
handchimes. The opening
suspended mallets create
an ethereal backdrop for
this well-known text
which shares the inner
voice of Mary as she
journeys to Bethlehem to
give birth to the Christ
child. Her conversation
with God reveals her
fears and confusion as
she cries out for God to
be with me now. The
quiet and subtle closing
provides a sense of
resolve as Mary accepts
her task and trust in her
Lord.
