Oboe and Strings was
composed in 2008, on a
commission from Winsor
Music, Inc. for Peggy

work was composed in
Paris and in Brooklyn
— it exhibits the
driving intensity and
energy of the latter, and
the elegant textural
beauty of the former. The
quartet is also available

String
Quartet No.4 was written
for the Camilli Quartet
who gave the first
performance at the Queen
Elizabeth Hall, London,
April 1995. It is
dedicated to the memory
of Nyman's composition
teacher, Alan Bush. This
quartet is a narrative
made up of a chain of
twelve complete but often
cross-related movements,
each quite simple in
design. For instance, the
Scottish melody first
heard in the second half
of I is hinted at in the
2nd violin/viola in the
second fast section of II
and is directly quoted
again during III and XII.
The theme of the fast
section of IV is taken up
again in VIII; IX reverts
to the mood of the
opening of I, while the
rising scale/syncopated
themes of II, IX and the
bass of X and XII are
related. X also
reintroduces the slow
harmonics theme from VII.
XII is (apparently) cast
in the form of a baroque
French rondeau. The main
theme of VI was plucked
out of the Quartet and
used in my score for
Christopher Hampton's
film Carrington. Duration
40 minutes. A set of
parts is available for
sale.

The energy
and drive of this piece
uses simple time
signatures of 4/4 and 3/4
and mixes groups of three
notes and syncopation to
the rhythm and the
melody. There is also a
use of a musical term
called hemiola, when
groups of two beats are
replaced by groups of
three beats, creating a
shift between duple and
triple meter. Syncopation
adds a modern, jazzy,
popular feel to this
exciting concert band
composition. Along with
syncopation and popular
influences are
countermelodies to the
main theme that are as
important as the melody
for balance and blend.
This adds a feeling of
baroque or renaissance
style to the texture. Yet
the melodies, chords, and
structure are
recognizable and
enjoyable to listen to
and perform. The middle
3/4 section is slightly
slower featuring brass
and saxophones and played
legato. Then at the key
change, it becomes more
articulate and
contrapuntal. The a tempo
at m. 88 returns to the
original thematic
material, differing
slightly from the
beginning, and the coda
has some added technical
and challenging woodwind
passages. The
cymbal/triangle part has
a lot of directions on
choking, hi-hat sound,
etc., that will add nice
color to the piece if
performed as
indicated. The energy

The
cantata Erforsche mich
Gott und erfahre mein
Herz BWV 136 was composed
in Bach's first year as
Kantor of St. Thomas's in
Leipzig and was first
performed on the 8th
Sunday after Trinity, the
18th July 1723. The
librettist is unknown.
The title of the cantata
is taken from verse 23 of
Psalm 139: Erforsche mich
Gott und erfahre mein
Herz; prufe mich und
erfahre, wie ich's meine.
(Search me, O God, and
know my heart: try me,
and know my thoughts) The
opening chorus forms an
extended fugue, framed by
string writing bursting
with energy. The
obbligato horn
accentuates and enriches
the movement with a
special tonal color. The
alto aria in F sharp
minor (movement 3)
comprises a trio movement
with an oboe d'amore as
solo instrument in a
contrasting range - a
presto middle section
which dramatically
charges the words Denn
seines Eifers Grimm
vernichtet (For the fury
of its zeal will
destroy). In the duet
(movement 5) the text is
sung by tenor and bass
line by line, sometimes
imitating contrapuntally,
and sometimes both
singing together
dramatically in
homophonic writing. A
simple chorale setting to
the melody Auf meinen
lieben Gott concludes the
cantata. Particularly
charming here is the
violin which joins the
four vocal parts as an
independent part. Score
