The

“Early Startâ€
string methods cultivate
playing together as early
as possible, initially in
duets. However playing in
larger mixed ensembles is
also encouraged and this
tried-and-trusted edition
for strings provides the
perfect start for this.
The first songs can all
be performed in canon;
each piece is notated in
violin, viola and bass
clef so that all three
string instruments can
play together in any
number and combination.
The collection then
continues with
through-composed pieces
by such composers as
Johann Valentin Rathgeber
and Johann Joseph Fux.
Here the middle part may
optionally be performed
by a viola or second
violin.
About
Baerenreiter's
Sassmannshaus
Children playfully
learn reliable technique
at the earliest age. For
more than three decades
the Sassmannshaus
Tradition has been the
household name for
excellence in beginner
methods in
German-speaking
countries. More than half
a million students have
successfully learned to
play using this
publication.
Thi
s tried and tested German
method is now available
in English! The
best-selling method that
gave generations of
European musicians their
foundation is now
available in English,
with content and songs
newly adapted for today's
English speaking
children.
What makes this method
so
special?
The child-friendly and
age-appropriate text
underlying the music
enables children to
perceive melodies as a
whole and to understand
their singable
qualities.
Songs
and scales in different
positions are easily
explained and mastered
within the first year.
This is an important
advantage over methods
that confine children to
the first position for
many years.
Note
reading is emphasized
from the first lesson -
children are brought up
to become proficient
sight-readers and play in
chamber music ensembles
as early as
possible.
In
contrast to other
beginner methods, The
Sassmannshaus Tradition
progresses swiftly by
introducing advanced
techniques in rudimentary
form, such as shifting
and varied bow
strokes.
Ensemble
playing is encouraged
from the very
beginning.
The
method is suitable for
single instruction as
well as for group and
class
lessons.
The
large print notes and
text as well as many
colorful illustrations
are particularly
child-friendly and very
attractive to pre-school
children and school
children
alike.
The
substantial volumes
contain comprehensive
material and carefully
calibrated learning
curves. They keep
children curious and
interested for many
months and
years.

Originally
written for string
quartet, this fantastic
characteristic piece from
Glazunov is a welcome
addition to the string
orchestra repertoire, as
arranged by Deborah Baker
Monday. Well-suited for
the more advanced
ensemble, it contains
excellent musical
opportunities and the
chance to play the music
of a prominent Russian
composer. Deborah's
setting stays very true
to the original, but
enhances it for use by
the full ensemble. Alert
your contest/festival
music committee to this
worthy new piece for high
school string
orchestras. Alexander
Glazunov
(1865–1936) lived
during a very
transitional period of
Russian music history,
active as a composer,
conductor, and teacher.
He was a part of the
Romantic school of
Russian music following
in the tradition of
Tchaikovsky, like his
fellow composers Borodin
and
Rimsky-Korsakov.During
his years at the
conservatory he
instructed many students
who chose to pursue the
modern trends set forth
by Debussy. Stravinsky,
Shostakovich, and even
Prokofiev took
instruction from
Glazunov. Although they
considered him
old-fashioned, he was
remembered as a
stabilizing influence
during transitional
times.Glazunov’s
music stayed within the
category of Russian
Romanticsm: nationalistic
with classical formality.
His list of works
includes numerous
symphonies, concertos,
piano and vocal works,
and chamber works
including seven string
quartets.Op. 15 was first
given the title
“Suite†(a
collection of dances),
and after a
friend’s
recommendation he changed
the name to
“Novelettesâ€.
The five movements are of
contrasting style, but
beautifully reminiscent
of their particular
themes:I. Alla
SpagnuolaII.
OrientaleIII. Interludium
in modo anticoIV. ValseV.
All’ UnghereseThis
movement is very well
adaptable for string
orchestra. The original
string quartet moodis
light, using harmonics
and pizzicato, but there
are forceful sections
which allow for strong
sectional playing
(especially with the
cello and bass orchestral
sound). There is very
much interesting melodic
material offered for all
instruments which lends
itself to a fantastic
string orchestra
arrangement. Conductors
will find material in all
sections which provide
greatopportunities for
rehearsal.The form is a
large ABA with a D.C. al
fine, but the sections
are not square by any
means.There is lots of
energy and momentum in
the material of both
sections, as well as a
modalcharacter which
gives the music an exotic
sound. Bowing patterns
abound in all sections
formore great teaching
opportunities.

Conce
rto da Camera II is a
work for six instruments
which may be further
grouped into three
separate entities -
clarinet, string quartet,
piano. In this
combination, chosen by
the work's commissioning
organizations (the
Chamber Music Society of
Lincoln Center in
conjunction with Mount
Holyoke College), lies
the work's first
challenge. While pairings
of any two of these three
sound types abound in the
concert literature, the
three together form a far
less common soundscape.
The main difficulty
appears in the necessity
to reconcile the
potential of both the
clarinet and the piano of
acting in a soloistic
capacity when pitted
against the string
quartet. Indeed, the
three movements of the
Concerto deal with this
problem in various ways,
with the balance of power
between the six
instruments' potential
for unity and contrast,
solo and ensemble
playing, continually
shifting and changing.
Yet another, more
delicate, balance of
power is at play here,
namely, the relationship
between the external,
foreground level of the
piece and a subtler
background level. What,
at first, appear like
small, gentle melodic
strands, mere echoes or
residues of the main
events, gradually assume
an inner life of their
own. Never actually
taking over yet always
there, a salient, if
quiet, factor within the
work's compositional
fabric and evolving
organism. Though
each movement includes
numerous tempo
fluctuations, the overall
thrust of the work
clearly suggests a
fast-slow-fast framework,
with the last movement
being a loosely
structured, occasionally
tempestuous Rondo.

At
19 years old, Saul
Goodman became timpanist
with the New York
Philharmonic Orchestra
under renowned conductor
Arturo Toscanini.
Forty-six years later, he
retired as one of the
most celebrated
orchestral musicians of
all time. During his
illustrious career as
composer, inventor, and
timpanist, he performed
on over 1,000 recordings,
placed his students in
the world’s major
symphony orchestras, and
set standards in
percussion performance
and pedagogy that remain
in place to this day. His
memoirs, and those of his
students, trace his
musical development and
take the reader on a
voyage of his unique
experiences during the
greatest era of the
American symphony
orchestras. His
incredible legacy as a
performer and a teacher
is unrivaled in the
history of percussion,
and perhaps any other
instrument as well. The
list of his students
reads like a
‘who’s
who’ of our world.
—Daniel Druckman,
New York Philharmonic He
was one of the greatest
artists of all times. He
was an inspiration to me,
not only as a student,
but throughout my
professional career.
—Vic Firth, Boston
Symphony Orchestra Saul
often said that his
teachers were Toscanini,
Monteux, Reiner,
Stokowski, and Bruno
Walter. He was the
greatest player in the
era of stars throughout
the symphonic world. The
sheer numbers of
concerts, recordings, and
TV that he played is
staggering.
—Morris Lang, New
York Philharmonic Saul
Goodman was a brilliant
orchestral musician who
just happened to play the
timpani. His style,
musicianship and strong
personality were a
tremendous influence on
those with whom he
worked. —James
Rago, Louisville
Orchestra Review from
Percussive Notes Magazine
This treasure of a book
tells the story from the
man himself: Saul
Goodman, one of the most
celebrated orchestral
musicians, timpanists,
and percussion teachers
to ever live. Through a
combination of
Goodman’s own
writing, as well as
contributions from a
variety of others who
knew, studied, and worked
with him, this 106-page
book is informative for
students and enjoyable
for general music
enthusiasts. The book is
constructed in two parts
— the first being
a previously unpublished
memoir written by Goodman
during his lifetime (he
died in 1996) and edited
by Anthony Cirone, and
the second consisting of
reflections from students
and colleagues, an
interview with Goodman
conducted by Rick
Mattingly in 1981, a
Percussive Notes article
published shortly after
this death, and an
overview of his recording
history. The book also
contains several pages of
pictures from throughout
his career. The first
part, written by Goodman,
contains five chapters:
Beginnings, Carnegie
Hall, The Business of
Modern Orchestra,
Toscanini, and On
Recording. While he
discusses many
percussion-specific
things, such as lessons
with Alfred Friese,
Goodman spends just as
much, if not more, time
talking about the general
orchestral culture of the
time and how it evolved
during his 46 years in
the New York
Philharmonic. This
includes reflections on
conductors, management,
recording, and the
audition process. The
second part proves just
as valuable, with
first-hand stories from
those who knew him. These
range from
acknowledgments of
Goodman’s
excellence in performing
and instruments making to
heartfelt and sometimes
humorous anecdotes
relating to his teaching.
This book will
undoubtedly be
appreciated by all
orchestral percussion and
classical music
performers, students,
conductors, and teachers,
as well as the general
concert-going public. It
is a rare first-hand look
into the life and career
of a world-class artist
and teacher. —

This is the
eleventh work in my
chamber music series,
STRATA, and my fourth
string quartet following
STRATA I, V, and IX. This
series started in 1988
based on the idea of
regarding registers as
strata (the plural form
of stratum), from which
the title in derived.
While I continue to write
pieces, however, the
initial concept changed
in various aspects. This
time, I returned to the
original idea To put it
simply, I restarted from
STRATA I. I used the same
instruments and stared at
strara created by the
four string parts. That
became the act of
composing STRATA XI. The
work doesn't have
'development' in the
general sense but
represents a panorama of
strata. It consists of
four movements
(fast-slow-fast-slow). In
fact, before writing the
STRATA series, I wrote a
long string quartet when
I was a student, but I
didn't include it in my
list of works. Anyway,
the thought of writing
string quartet has never
disappeared from me. It
alays weighs heavily on
my mind. Shin-Ichiro
Ikebe.
