Horizons is a spirited
tribute to the musical
heritage of the United
States Air Force. The
main theme is a variation
of the U.S. Air Force
Song (Off We Go), with a
secondary theme based on
A Toast to the Host (the
bridge of The Air Force
Song). Throughout the
work, fragments of other
Air Force-related songs
appear: Lord, Guard and
Guide (the Air Force
Hymn), Air Force Blue,
and Those Magnificent Men
in Their Flying Machines.
The original request for
this work was a daunting
task: I was asked to
create an Air Force
companion piece to Robert
Jager's Esprit de Corps
that would mirror the
style and spirit of that
landmark work. The goal
was to use elements of
our various Air Force
tunes in the same way
that Jager incorporated
The Marine's Hymn into
his work - that is, to
weave a musical tapestry
of the Air Force's
musical heritage without
ever becoming a mere
arrangement of the
original material. As a
former student of Robert
Jager at Tennessee
Technological University,
I discussed my plans for
the piece with him,
shared my progress along
the way, and sought his
guidance as I had done so
many times in the past.
He was delighted that I
managed to incorporate a
few Jager-isms into the
music, including one
direct quote from Esprit
de Corps. Although Blue
Horizons was conceived as
a dedication to the Air
Force's musical legacy,
it is also a personal
homage to my teacher and
friend, Robert Jager.

only two flutists are
available, omit the
piccolo part and have
them play Flute 1 and 2;
in this case, Flute 1
should switch over to
piccolo (still playing
from the Flute 1 part) at
m. 81 and back to regular
flute at m. 114. If only
covering the Flute 1 and
2 parts, Flute 2 should
ignore indications to
switch to piccolo and
just play the entire work
on regular flute. * Oboe

As a young man,
Andrew Pearce had fond

based on one original

orchestra’ a

of the oratorio season at
the beginning of 1736
Handel presented a
composition which, like
hardly any of his other
oratorios, gave him the
opportunity to display
his musical artistry:
John Dryden's ode
Alexander's Feast or the
Power of Music, published
in 1696, demonstrates the
power of music by the
example of the ancient
hero, Alexander the
Great. From the
impressive lament on the
death of Darius, the King
of Persia, to the
boisterous Praise of
Bacchus Handel avails
himself of the entire
breadth of the musical
representation of the
emotions and the
possibilities for
expression. In the text
by Newburg Hamilton added
at the end of work St.
Cecilia elevates the
events of the ancient
heathen story, which
Handel expressed in
plastic, skillful
polyphony. Later, this
homage to the patron
saint of church music,
Handel also present the
opportunity to perform
the work on St. Cecilia's
Day (22 November). For
the first time the
present new edition is
based consistently on
Handel's conducting
score, which he used for
his own performances of
the oratorio, thus not
only eliminating timeworn
errors, but also offering
clarity concerning the
choruses, the arias and
recitatives, actually
performed in Handel's
concerts, as well as
their sequence of
performance. The new
Carus edition offers two
performance versions: the
version of the premiere
in 1736, as well as a
revised version from
1751. Furthermore, the
inclusion of the Concerto

With Berlin
Music, Brett Dean wrote a
threefold homage: to the
classical duo consisting
of violin and piano; to
the violin virtuoso
Midori, for whom the
piece was written; and to
the city of Berlin, where
he lived between the
mid-1980s and 2000 and
whose rich cultural life
he owes much to his
development as a musician
and composer. The first
four, relatively short
movements of the
five-movement work form a
suite of character
pieces, which is followed
by a longer final
movement. In summary,
this turns out to be the
actual main movement from
which all motifs and
harmonies emerged in a
compositional manner.
This includes tuning down
the G side by a whole
tone - an apparently
small difference, but one
that has a major effect
on the timbre and
resonance of the
instrumentand suddenly
makes previously
impossible interval
sequences playable. In
addition, the violin in
the third movement (a
moto perpetuo in which
Dean bows to Ravel's
violin sonata) has to
play with a practice
damper, while the pianist
changes the instrument
and plays on a standing
piano that is dampened by
a pedal and placed next
to the concert grand

The
Peasant Cantata BWV 212
is unique in Bach's
cantata output both in
content and musically.
Although it belongs to
Bach's homage cantatas,
the text deals only
indirectly with praise
for a new chamberlain.
Rather, the eloquent
characters portray
situations from rural
life, which are also
reflected in the music:
Bach often drew on
well-known dance
movements and folk tunes.
Because of this the
cantata as a whole seems
less 'academic' than his
(surviving) sacred vocal
music. Just two arias
were composed in the
typical da capo structure
in which the musicians'
abilities are put to the
test. But because of the
shortness of the other
movements, the cantata is
extremely varied.
Picander's humorous text
makes the cantata
extremely versatile, far
beyond its original

written in 1811 in Pest,

theater. The first

FANTASY took place, also
in Pest, on June 1, 1853.

melody of The Friendly
Beasts (“Orientis
Partibusâ€)
originated in
twelfth-century France
and has been attributed
to Pierre de Corbeil,
Bishop of Sens. The song
migrated to England by
the thirteenth century,
where its popularity grew
and in the early
twentieth century the
familiar English words
were added. The melody
has been set in both
quadruple and triple
meter and is presented in
both meters here. Ralph
Vaughan Williams
(1872–1958)
included the carol in his
English Hymnal (1906).The
words in both the
original Latin and modern
English versions pay
homage to the place of
animals in the Christmas
story. The carol has also
been known as The Donkey
Carol and The Animal
Carol.This setting is
intended to reflect the
Medieval origins of the
melody. Some freedom of
tempo would be
appropriate during the
“chantâ€
version of the melody
(mm. 6–18). Adding
poco ritardando at m. 28,
at the discretion of the
director, should lead to
a stricter tempo in mm.
31–53, in the
manner of a medieval
round dance. A gentle
approach to the
performance is
appropriate. Finger
cymbals could be added to
or replace all or part of
the triangle part, again
at the director’s
discretion.

For
the magnificent opening
of the oratorio season at
the beginning of 1736
Handel presented a
composition which, like
hardly any of his other
oratorios, gave him the
opportunity to display
his musical artistry:
John Dryden's ode
Alexander's Feast or the
Power of Music, published
in 1696, demonstrates the
power of music by the
example of the ancient
hero, Alexander the
Great. From the
impressive lament on the
death of Darius, the King
of Persia, to the
boisterous Praise of
Bacchus Handel avails
himself of the entire
breadth of the musical
representation of the
emotions and the
possibilities for
expression. In the text
by Newburg Hamilton added
at the end of work St.
Cecilia elevates the
events of the ancient
heathen story, which
Handel expressed in
plastic, skillful
polyphony. Later, this
homage to the patron
saint of church music,
Handel also present the
opportunity to perform
the work on St. Cecilia's
Day (22 November). For
the first time the
present new edition is
based consistently on
Handel's conducting
score, which he used for
his own performances of
the oratorio, thus not
only eliminating timeworn
errors, but also offering
clarity concerning the
choruses, the arias and
recitatives, actually
performed in Handel's
concerts, as well as
their sequence of
performance. The new
Carus edition offers two
performance versions: the
version of the premiere
in 1736, as well as a
revised version from
1751. Furthermore, the
inclusion of the Concerto
for Harp HWV 294 (CV
55.294) is also possible;
Handel composed this work
especially for
Alexander's Feast (as an
illustration of
Timotheus, the ancient
poet who played the
lyre). For this purpose
the edition contains the
appropriate alternatives
for the sequence of the
