Written
in a modern Americana
style, A Country Memory
begins subtly with a
lyrical violin melody
over triads and
open-string fifths in the
other sections of the
string orchestra. A
pastoral country-feel is
established in the
introduction and
continues throughout the
piece. The eightmeasure
folk tune at m. 5 in
violin I, played legato,
is featured in each
section of the ensemble.
The cello plays the
melody in m. 25 and then
hands off to the high
strings in m. 29.In the
interlude at m. 35,
violin I states a
two-measure melody. The
rest of the ensemble
joins in harmony two
measures later, and the
full group builds to the
ritard. in m. 42. Low
strings carry the melody
in m. 43, as violin I
plays an ostinato above
them. The ensemble
builds, playing
ascending, scalar
melodies and moves to the
Maestoso section at m.
53. This is the final
grand statement of the
main theme before the
ending begins at m. 61.
From there to the end,
the group plays
vigorously with a full
sound, highlighted by
repeated sixteenth-note
figures in violin I as
the piece soars to the
final chord.

The
seventh wind quartet was
completed in 2002 and is
fashioned after a
childhood memory of a
chaotic and impromptu
music experience. I
remembered a
children’s
birthday party where
several sisters, who had
taken music lessons, were
pushing each other off a
piano bench in order to
have a brief turn playing
easy tunes. This artless
ruckus turned out to be
an exciting 'performance'
despite being unplanned.
The girls were laughing,
pushing, shoving,
struggling, even banging
and pounding, while
managing to render
chopped-up tune fragments
from pieces that were
popular at the time. The
result is a
single-movement quartet,
where surrealism is based
on non-surrealistic
reality. For advanced
performers. Duration:
9'15.

After the
first sketches had been
put to paper in 1815,
Beethoven only finally
put the finishing touches
to his last completed
symphony in 1824. With
its extended finale in
which soloists and choir
perform, building the
bridge to the symphonic
cantata with their
invocation of fraternity,
it marks a caesura in the
history of the symphony
that echoed long into the
nineteenth century. The
main theme of the ode
“To Joy†by
Friedrich Schiller, set
to music in the final
movement, has become one
of the most popular
melodies in all of
classical music and today
serves as the official
anthem of Europe. Based
on the musical text of
the Beethoven Complete
Edition and furnished
with a new preface, this
recently prepared edition
reflects the latest in
Beethoven scholarship.
Now,in this study
edition, it is available
to everyone at a
reasonable price and in a

The
premiere of this work in
December 1813 ranks among
the greatest successes
Beethoven ever celebrated
in public as a composer.
One reviewer wrote at the
time that in its themes
the new symphony was
“so favourable and
easily comprehensible
that every music lover
falls for the powerful
allure of its
beauty.†The
incisiveness of the
themes is fundamentally
related to the basic
ostinato rhythms, which
help shape each
movementÂ’s
distinctive character.
Richard Wagner even
called the composition,
with its ecstatic finale,
an “apotheosis of
the dance.†Based

A Certain
Slant of Light is
inspired by the
introspective
mood created by the
rays of light on a dark
cloudy day. A
colorful, murmuring
introduction is followed
by a rich main theme in a
minor key. It is a
well-scored and
fresh-sounding piece that
will help young bands
enhance their
musicality. Rays of
light against the dark of
a cloudy day, or these
same rays of light as
they penetrate a dark
room in late afternoon
can create a mood of
introspection and make us
pause to reflect on the
nature of life, loss and
hope. A Certain Slant of
Light is inspired by the
title, but does not
depict the actual
poem There is a
Certain Slant of
Light by Emily
Dickinson.A Certain Slant
of Light opens with a
colorful murmuring
introduction followed
immediately by a
statement of the main
theme of the piece. The
opening briefly returns,
followed by a setting of
the melody in flute with
woodwind accompaniment.
The opening then returns
and grows to a climax
built on variations of
the main theme. The piece
fades to silence with a
soft echo of the opening
murmuring material.I
enjoyed writing this
piece and hope your
students will enjoy
playing these contrasting
styles and that you will
find the piece beneficial
in teaching important
musical concepts.Peter
Terry, 2018.

Pavel
Haas (1899–1944),
one of Leoš
Janácek’s most
talented pupils, composed
his Wind Quintet op. 10
in 1929. This work was
issued by the Prague
publisher Edition
Sádlo in 1934, and is
one of the few
compositions that was
printed during his
lifetime. Its first
performance took place in
Brno on 24 March 1930.
With its relative brevity
and standard
instrumentation (flute,
oboe, clarinet, horn and
bassoon), it is currently
gaining in popularity
among wind ensembles. The
composer structured the
quintet as a
four-movement suite with
the titles
„Preludio“,
„Preghiera“,
„Ballo
eccentrico“ and
„Epilogo“.
This first Urtext
edition of the Wind
Quintet is based on the
original print which was
proofread by the composer
in 1935, as well as the
autograph score and a
copyist’s
manuscript. The
publication has been
supported by the
TerezÃn
Composers‘
Institute.
