The toccata
genre has undergone great
change since BachÂ’s
time. Originally denoting
works of recitative or
improvisatory character,
since the 19th century
the emphasis has been on
a continuous pulsating
rhythm. In
ProkofievÂ’s
masterpiece, composed in
1912, this rhythm grows
into a hammering motoric
drive that dispenses with
developed themes or
motifs. That which seems
fascinating and
enthralling to us today
came as a shock to the
critics of that time. But
there were also
proponents such as
Prokofiev's friend
Nikolai Myaskovsky, who
wrote of the Toccata:
“It is a fiendishly
clever thing, edgy,
energetic and full of
personalityâ€.
Besides the printed
editions that appeared
during Prokofiev's
lifetime we also had the
autograph at our disposal
for this Urtext edition.
Yulianna Avdeeva, a
master of virtuoso piano
music, has been
responsible for the
fingerings.

Alexander
Zemlinsky's music was
long unjustly
overshadowed by what was
regarded as the
“more

Zemlinsky was close
friends with its
protagonist Arnold
Schönberg, he never
did take the latter's
radical step into
dodecaphony. At the same
time, he composed works
that were no less
original or fully
fledged. Composed between
1913 and 1915, his Second
String Quartet in
particular pushed the
contemporaneous
understanding of form and
tonality to its limits.
With just one movement
but spanning over 1,200
measures, this
multi-faceted work
numbers among the most
significant contributions
to the genre of the time
and has long merited a
critical new edition. The
Urtext edition by G.

many errors and
inaccuracies in the first

comparison with the
autograph sources in
Vienna and Washington.
For the first time, too,
the metronome markings

have been incorporated.

the Carnival of the

In the
field of New Music, Sofia
Gubaidulina's “De
profundis†has
already achieved the
status of a classic. It
is not only an attainment
of the New Music that
instruments are capable
of approaching the human
voice in their sound, or
that they can imitate
areas of expression found
in language and
linguistic articulation.
But the avant-garde has
surely expanded the
spectrum to a
considerable extent. The
piece for solo bayan is
an impressive example of
this. The listener
witnesses a slow and
inexorable
intensification from the
“rattling†of
the lowest accordion
register up to the pure,
tender tones of the
highest register. It is
“anascent from the
lowest to the highest,
from the breath and soul
to the world's soul or
wisdomâ€, as
Gubaidulina's friend and
colleague Viktor Suslin
once expressed it. With
the means of sound,
Gubaidulina transfers a
symbol of life onto the
music: breathing.
Breathing distinguishes
the living from the dead.
What other instrument,
other than the winds,
perhaps, could better
lendexpression to this
characteristic than the
accordion? In contrast to
the wind instruments,
however, the accordion is
not an instrument into
which the player breathes
and creates breathing
sounds - instead, the
instrument itself assumes
this function. It
breathes through the
pulling apart and
pressing together of the
bellows. As the basis of
her composition,
Gubaidulina chose the
lines of the Psalm 130
“From the depths, o
Lord, I call to
you†for the
characterisation of her
interlaced message.
Shadowy chorale melodies
are occasionally heard,
but the fundamental idea
of ascent remains
decisive. Sharp
insertions and expressive
gestures, intrusive
glissandi and nervous
vibrati repeatedly
disturb the direction of
movement. And then we
hear consciously the
integrated breathing of
the instrument -
breathing slightly,
hardly audible, opposing
the powerful chord
blocks. The musicologist
Valentina Cholopova once
said of this: “All
these sounds confront
solemn chords richly
ornamented with
figurations, but there is
also a long, monodic
melody running through
the entire symbolic path
of the work - from the
depths all the way up to
the brilliant
heights.†The work
is dedicated to Friedrich
Lips!

Brahms's
First String Sextet
became very popular after
its publication in 1861,
yet his publisher Simrock
still hesitated when the
composer offered him a
second such work in 1865,
“in the same
cheerful mood.†So
Brahms made overtures to
other publishers, and
then Simrock finally
agreed to take it on. The
critics were initially
rather skeptical towards
this Sextet op. 36, but
Brahms's friends
thoroughly approved of
it. Clara Schumann
praised its accomplished
motivic work, while
others enthused about its
magical sound colors.
This practical edition by
Katrin Eich, based on the
Brahms Complete Edition,
now offers performers the
opportunity to form their
own opinion, whether in
performance or by
perusing our study
edition. The parts

When
Dvorák wrote his
Serenade for 10 winds and
2 lower strings in
January 1878, the heyday
of the great wind
serenades and
“Harmoniemusikâ€
wind ensembles was
already long gone. He was
probably inspired by
hearing Mozart's Gran
Partita shortly
beforehand in Vienna. The
home key of d minor here
is striking, as is the
often serious, even
tragic atmosphere that
repeatedly darkens the
otherwise cheerful mood
that is typical of the
serenade genre. Perhaps
this was a reaction to
the death of two of his
children just a few
months earlier. Despite
the work's dramatic
character - or perhaps
because of it -
Dvorák's Serenade was
taken up in many European
cities soon after its
first performance in
Prague, and fêted as a

autograph sources in
