Lidia - TONADES is a
small collection of piano
pieces written during
December 2003 and January
2004, with a clear
didactic aim. I have
tried to combine elements
from traditional music
from the Balearic Islands
together with well-known
musical forms, using a
personal language,
typical of the 20th
century. The technical
demand is that of an
intermediate level in
music. My main intention
was to contribute to and
enrich the intermediate
level piano repertory,
while promoting the
knowledge of our own
popular roots. The parts
that make up Tonades can
be performed
consecutively, presenting
the complete work with
variety and unity, or the
parts can be played
separately. The work is
dedicated to all young
piano students.

landscape can combine to
form a stylistically
perfect organism. The
friend of the Munich
vocal teacher Professor
Anton Schiegg, a thorough
expert on South German
folk art, drew my
attention to the precious
treasure of the
enchanting Upper Bavarian
and Tyrolean Nativity
songs, says Joseph Haas,
describing the suggestion
for his play, which is

brightest star among the
castrato tenors of the
18th century. Handels
enemies brought him to
London so that he could
outshine Handels singers.
Here, Matthus depicts
Farinelli at the Spanish
court, ruled by the
pathologically melancholy
King Philip V. In a
review of his life, we
relive important stages
in the career of the
singer, who lived outside
of the norm and found his
home in the fascinating
twilight world between
art and
artificiality.

romantic poetry of the

Poets,†names that

where their poems were
usually recited. His
poems – first and
foremost Thanatopsis

of Deathâ€) as his
most famous – are
rooted in the English
tradition, but at the
same time show Bryant's
openness to a genuine
American language and
lifeworld. Evgeny
Kissin's setting is a
large vocal scene
intensely informed by
recitative, which
congenially allows the
prevailing mood of the
text to resound. Our

Written in
1885, the eight songs
after texts by the now
little-known poet Hermann
von Gilm have a special
place in Richard Strauss'
corpus of Lieder. For the
first time, he composed
an entire set of songs on
texts by a single poet,
collecting them into one
opus that was also to
appear in print. Some of
the numbers in it, like
Zueignung, Die Nacht, and
Allerseelen, are among
the most popular Strauss
songs of all time, but
the entire cycle with its
well-planned structure is
also worthy of closer
examination and
performance. The aspiring
composer quite
consciously aligns
himself with the
tradition ranging from
Schubert to Wolf,
choosing the highly
Romantic subject of
unrequited love and
illuminating its most
diverse facets. The
primary source for the

Gounod had
no qualms about arranging
well-known works by
earlier masters after his
own fashion. Thus in 1852
he added a melody with
its own operatic climax
to the famous arpeggios
of the C-major Prelude
BWV 846 from Bach's
Well-Tempered Clavier. He
first published
instrumental versions of
it under the title
�M�ditationï¿
½, then tried fitting
various texts to the
melody until in 1859 he
arrived at the definitive
vocal version using the
text of the Ave Maria.
Already by the 1890s it
was claimed that
�[we] have heard
this sweet melody
innumerable times from
the best lady
singers�, and its
popularity has continued
to the present day.
Reason enough, then, for
Henle Verlag to publish
an Urtext edition of this
worldwide hit, based on
the sources and with
appropriate critical
commentary. In 1859, at
the same time as the
original edition for high
voice, editions for
middle and low voice,
presumably commissioned
by the publishers, were
also issued. Following
this model, the Henle
Urtext edition of
�Ave Maria� is
also offered in two
transpositions for the
lower register.
