This organ reduction is intended to use instead of the original orchestral accompaniment- it is compatible with new edition of Requiem da Camera by Christian Alexander (BH 12681). The organ reduction was done by Francis Jackson, doyen of English cathedral organists and titulaire at York Minster for 36 years.Jackson sympathetically recreates the chamber orchestra scoring for a three-manual organ. Ingeniously, the manual couplings (II to III, II and III to I) are unaltered throughout, with pedal coupled to manuals as appropriate. Detailed registrations are not indicated as these are best left to the performer, taking into account the unique circumstances of the particular instrument, size of choir and acoustic setting at each individual performance.The user-friendly landscape score includes at least one principal vocal line cued throughout, and a cappella choral passages are reproduced in full.Requiem da Camera was Finzi's first extended work- only the instrumental prelude was performed during his lifetime. The other three movements are settings of poems by John Masefield, Thomas Hardy and Wilfrid Wilson Gibson. Scored for baritone solo, small chorus (or SATB soli) and chamber orchestra, the wellspring of the Requiem's composition was the death, during active service in 1918, of Finzi's composition teacher, Ernest Farrar. The work may also be viewed as a metaphor - the permanence of the land, and a centuries-old pattern of rural life following the rhythm of the turning seasons, contrasted with the violent havoc and destructive dislocation wrought by war. Following the publication of Francis Jackson's organ reduction of Finzi's Requiem da Camera in 2014, Robert Gower, chairman of the Finzi Trust, recitalist and organist of Nottingham Cathedral, has created reductions of the full orchestra accompaniments to two more of Finzi's choral works. These reductions broaden the reach of these works to choirs which do not wish to present the works with orchestra, as with other standards from the sacred repertoire such the Requiems of Fauré and Duruflé. The reductions sympathetically recreate the orchestra scoring for a three-manual organ. Ingeniously, the manual couplings (II to III, II and III to I) are unaltered throughout, with pedal coupled to manuals as appropriate. Detailed registrations are not indicated as these are best left to the performer, taking into account the unique circumstances of the particular instrument, size of choir and acoustic setting at each performance. The scores are user-friendly, in landscape format and with at least one principal vocal line cued throughout, and a cappella choral passages are reproduced in full. The reductions are fully compatible with the published piano vocal scores of the respective works which the singers will use. For St Cecilia, Ceremonial Ode for tenor solo, chorus and orchestra - words by Edmund Blunden. The original work was commissioned by the St Cecilia's Day Festival Committee for the 1947 celebration of music's patron saint. The ceremonial mood is established with fanfares, and the sonorous sweep of the choral writing reflects Finzi's admiration for Parry and Elgar. The 'catalogue' of saints, shared between the soloist and chorus, are deftly delineated: St Valentine, St George, St Dunstan, St Swithin and St Cecilia herself. In rapt stillness, the English composers of the past - Merbecke, Byrd, Dowland and Purcell - are summoned. Today the Gloria RV 589 (BA 7674) is one of Vivaldi's best-known compositions and one of the most frequently performed sacred vocal works from the Baroque period. Vivaldi wrote the ; Gloria as a self-contained work in the style of a concertante mass. However, it was probably also performed within church services. The scoring of the solo voices (SSA) suggests that the work was written during his period at the Ospedale della Pietà, around 1716. In the twelve movements of the ; Gloria, Vivaldi displays the whole range of his mastery from festive, sublime outer movements to tender, transparently scored solo passages. Thesame mastery has also been applied to the ; Kyrie RV 587 (BA 8950), scored for two choirs and two groups of stringed instruments. The date of its composition remains unclear. It is a purely a choral work without solo passages. Both works can be performed independently but can also be combined as a kind of short mass. Although the authenticity of the autograph manuscript score is beyond doubt, these new editions contain some re-evaluations in phrasing and performance practice which go beyond what other editions have to offer. Par AHO KALEVI. Kalevi Aho's (b. 1949) concerto no. 2 for cello and orchestra (2013) is in five movements performed without a break. It begins with a swinging Berceuse, followed by a very quick, virtuosic Presto in 5/8 time. The heart of the concerto is the cadenza-like third movement, Adagio, dominated throughout by the soloist. A fairly short Allegretto is followed by the closing Epilogue. This has flashbacks to the opening movement, and they lead to a cadenza in which the soloist plays only flageolet notes and pizzicatos. The concerto ends with a virtuosic coda in 5/8 time evocative of the second movement. Arto Noras gave the concerto its first performance with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Osmo Vänskä in Naantali on June 5, 2014. It was a joint commission from the Naantali Music Festival and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. The song was introduced by Frances Langford in the film 'Every Night at Eight' and released that year. It became Langford's signature song. Bob Hope, who often worked with Langford entertaining troops in World War II, later wrote that her performance of the song was often the show-stopper. This is one of the most recorded songs out there, from contemporary Billy Eilish to legends such as Luis Armstrong, Vera Lynn and Charlie Parker. The tune started as film music and has later been used in movies such as 'The Nutty Professor' and in “The Spike Jones Show”. Please try to create a 'ballroom' atmosphere around this song. It is possible to expand the solo part with more soloists (45 – 69) and you can choose whether you want to let everyone in part 3 play what is written, or let each one improvise. This important work of choral literature can now be performed by smaller forces thanks to this arrangement for soloists, choir and chamber orchestra. Its finest attributes are its rich melodic invention, colourful instrumentation and immediate message. Add to these its rewarding solo part, and the result is truly one of his best concertos ? and works. He himself did not hesitate to regard it as such. It was premiered in Helsinki on September 16, 1985, having been completed at Ljugarn on the Swedish island of Gotland at the end of June. The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra was conducted by Leif Segerstam, and the soloist was the concerto?s dedicatee, Mikael Helasvuo. The Flute Concerto opens with a Ritornello in which the flute's playful, dance-like passages make sharp contrast with the orchestra's heroic stance. In the mellow Canzona which follows, the flute plays rhapsodically over repetitive orchestral figures. The work's 'action-packed' finale hints at parody in its military march-like opening, but also gives rein to the lyricism already familiar from the second movement. Nonetheless, or maybe precisely for this quality, the work has conquered concert podiums worldwide.For this scholarly-critical edition, the editor has consulted no less than 16 sources, many more than were ever used for any other edition of the Requiem - some of these sources were never evaluated before and one source, a hand-written vocal score, particularly relevant to the evaluation of the 'Liber scriptus?, was newly discovered.As such, this edition offers new philological and editorial decisions regarding phrasing, articulation and dynamics and succeeds in presenting practical suggestions to solve musical problems and those concerning the interpretation of this famous work.This edition comprises a concise Critical Commentary in the score. The most important editions published in the 19th century are compared with regard to musicological questions in the work. The genesis of some misunderstandings included in the 1913 and 1964 Ricordi editions is traced. For the first time it makes these pieces, scored for chamber ensemble, separately available in an Urtext edition. It is based on the musical text of the solo harpsichord version found in the pioneering new edition of ?Pièces de clavecin III? (BA 10846). The editor has painstakingly evaluated the many impressions of the original print, most of which he himself discovered in libraries throughout the world. The preface (Fr/Eng) contains informative details on historical performance practice and on the conception of the ?Concerts royaux?, which Couperin expressly intended to be performed either by solo harpsichord or with accompanying ensemble. Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, written to a libretto by Salvadore Cammarano, was first performed at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples on 26 September 1835. It has remained in the repertory without interruption as one of Donizetti’s most popular operas throughout its nearly 200-year history. The edition proposes as the principal text a version of the opera that, for the most part, is as near as possible to that given at the premiere in Naples. However, one of the important new features of the edition is that it includes several fully orchestrated passages that, for unknown reasons, were cancelled very close to the time of the first performance. It also features in the third-act mad scene an obbligato part for the glass harmonica, an instrument that Donizetti had chosen for this extraordinary scene, and drafted in his autograph score, but was then constrained to substitute with a solo flute when the glass harmonica player got into contractual difficulties with the theatre. While the glass harmonica part was considered a mere “musicological curiosity” some decades ago, the critical edition now convincingly argues for its legitimate restoration as part of the composer’s preferred concept. The Sources section of the edition includes a detailed examination of all contemporary sources for the opera. The composer’s autograph score is of course the most important of these, but also of great value is the first printed vocal score of the opera, which in some numbers has a piano reduction prepared by the composer and contains many vocal variants (all reported in the score) that will be a great value to performers. There are also a number of early manuscript copies of the full score, several of which are valuable in outlining the first interpretations of Donizetti’s music. The critical edition restores the original keys, thus maintaining Donizetti’s overall harmonic design, but discusses transpositions that later entered the performing and editorial tradition of the opera.
