Missa Populi
(Mass or Music of the
People) came about as a
result of a desire to
combine the elements of
contemporary musical
expression with that of
the current Catholic
Liturgy. The only
deviation from current
practice is the setting
for the Credo which is
not usually set to music
in the Masses of today.
It uses the concept of
the old beatnik coffe
house poets reading their
poetry to a background of
some sort of music,
mostly jazz. It is
noteworthy that the Credo
was composed in the
Bartok Cottage in Saranac
Lake, New York on July
21st, 2005.

Dieser Streifzug durch

20. Jahrhunderts lasst
beides zu, wobei es neben
der rhythmischen
Auffassung noch einen
weiteren, nicht
unwesentlichen
Unterschied gibt. Wahrend
man in der Klassik bei
Akkorden in der rechten
Hand tendenziell die
oberste Note leicht
heraushebt, wird das im
Jazz nicht so gemacht.
Alle Tone sind gleich
anzuschlagen, denn nur
dann kann sich der Klang
eines Akkordes
vollstandig entfalten.
Und Klassiker werden
dieses Stuck
wahrscheinlich schneller
und damit virtuoser als
,,Jazzmusiker spielen,
wobei naturlich manche
Stellen dazu geradezu
verleiten sollen. Etwas
anders verhalt es sich
bei den wiederkehrenden
Sechzehntelketten. Wenn
man diese Passagen sehr
genau phrasiert, dann
sollte man sie nicht zu
schnell nehmen. Aber in
Wahrheit habe Sie jede
Freiheit, und deswegen
sollte sie sich auch
nehmen. Doch hier noch
ein kleiner Tipp: es gibt
ein paar Stellen (eine
verrate ich Ihnen hier:
Takt 222), wo ein
Subitopiano Wunder wirkt,
gerade dann, wenn man es
am wenigsten erwartet.

black 'champion',
Olympion together with
his fans. Out of a series
of violent tensions,
individual and
collective, there
develops a riot in which
Olympion and Gayle are
killed and Yuri is
near-fatally wounded.
Nadia dies peacefully.
During an interlude in
which a group attempts a
psychadelic 'trip', the
messenger, Astron, is
mistaken for God - a
claim he dismisses
ironically. Yuri is
operated on by Luke, a
young doctor, and,
released from the
cracking plaster, he
finds reconciliation with

John Frith for 8-part
Trombone Ensemble. It was
written as the opening
Anthem for Trombonanza
2017, which is a festival
takes place annually in
the town of Santa Fe,
Argentina. Mr. Frith
was commissioned to
compose this work to open
the Festival. The
music is about 5 minutes
in length and features
strong Latin rhythms
throughout. The work
builds and builds as it
adds layers of
complexities including a
jazz solo for one of the
players. The all the
middle parts are playable
by intermediate
performers. Part 1 can be
performed on alto or
tenor and goes up to high
f's. Part 8 is quite
low. The work ends in
a big climax after
building up throughout.
Very fun work to perform
with a massed group.
