The
Sonata op. 12 is the
largest of Sibeliuss
piano works. Sibelius may
have composed it in the
summer of 1893. The
second movement comes
from a work originally
planned for male choir to
a text from the Finnisch
national epic Kalevala.
Something of its
character my still have
shaped the final outcome,
with its restless opening
bars, sparkling writing
in the pianos high
register, the calming
homophonic passages, and
soothing arpeggio
writing. The first public
performance took place on
April 17, 1895, in the
Solennity Hall of
Helsinki University. The
first edition was
published by Breitkopf &
Hartel in 1906. Over and
beyond the excellent
music text, this volumes
contains an extensive
preface by Sibelius
expert Kari
Kilpelainen.

Nearly all of the
orchestral arrangements
were made years after the

voice and piano. Yet even
though the arrangements
were made in a very short
period of time Sibelius
handled the combination
of solo voice and
orchestra in all songs
with equal mastery
sometimes creating dark
and dramatic atmospheres
(in Pa verandan vid

colorful impressions (in
Soluppgang) or
light-colored transparent
textures (in Varen
flyktar hastigt) and
always basing his ideas
on the poetic idea of the
song while discovering
refined ways of
supporting it. In most
cases Sibelius used a
comparatively small
orchestra: Varen flyktar

flute and four horns
added to the strings. Mit

Jean
Sibelius's Six Songs for
Male Choir Op. 18 are
published as Urtext with
the original Finnish
lyrics for the first time
in this edition. Most of
these stem from the
Finnish national epics
Kalevala and Kanteletar,
but the texts of Sydameni
laulu [Song of My Heart]
and Metsamiehen laulu
[Song of the Woodmen] are
from the poet Aleksis
Kivi. The individual
pieces originated over a
couple of years for
different choirs and
occasions and were only
later combined by
Sibelius under a common
Opus number. Venematka
[Boat Trip] originated as
early as 1893, Saarellaa
palaa [Fire on the
Island] was first
performed in 1895 and
Sortunut aani [The Broken
Voice] in 1899. Sydameni
laulu was published in
the same year together
with Metsamiehen laulu,
while Terve kuu
[Greetings to the Moon]
was not composed by
Sibelius until 1901. The
contents of the
collection Op. 18 were
subsequently extended,
revised and repositioned
by Sibelius many times;
the final shape with six
settings was established
in 1930. Four of these
settings were also
arranged for mixed choir
and have already been
published as an Urtext
edition (ChB 5372). The
edition includes
translations of the
lyrics in German and
English as well as an
informative preface that
is based on volume VII/2
of the complete edition
Jean Sibelius Works, just
like the score.

A
main work by Sibelius as
facsimile edition The
large orchestral song
Luonnotar is considered
as one of the boldest
works of Jean Sibelius.
This alone would be
reason enough to print
the autograph sources
(full score and piano
reduction) as a color
facsimile for the
Sibelius Anniversary Year
2015. In addition, the
autograph score also has
a special significance
for the transmission: it
ensured the survival of
the entire work after
World War II; the source
material for the printer
compiled by Breitkopf &
Hartel had been destroyed
in an air-raid bombing in
1943. The meticulously
elucidated volume is the
first complete facsimile
edition of an orchestral
work by Jean Sibelius - a
milestone in Sibelius
editorial history that
meaningfully supplements
the complete edition Jean
Sibelius Werke as a truly
special volume.

Finnish.
The hymn
from the tone poem
Finlandia op. 26 for
orchestra, one of the
best-known works of Jean
Sibelius, became the
unofficial national
anthem of Finland with
the text of Veikko Antero
Koskenniemi (1906-1962).
In a time of great
insecurity after the
attack of the Soviet
Union in 1939,
Koskenniemi managed to
capture the rising
national consciousness
and the hope of the Finns
for an imminent solution
of the conflict. Sibelius
had already written an
arrangement of the hymn
for male choir on a
different text in 1938,
but after a suggestion by
his publisher Roger
Lindberg, he decided to
write a version for mixed
choir, too, on the by now
better known text by
Koskenniemi. This version
in F major was published
in 1949, but at Breitkopf
& Hartel only with a
German translation by
Hellmuth von Hase. The
Finlandia-Hymn with the
Finnish text by
Koskenniemi is therefore
now available at
Breitkopf & Hartel for
the first time, as Urtext
of the complete edition
Jean Sibelius Works. The
edition includes both the
version in F major as
well as a second version
in A flat major, written
by Sibelius himself, too,
but until now unpublished
outside of the complete
edition.

The two
choruses in Jean
Sibelius's Op. 65 are
different in both their
languages, Swedish and
Finnish, as well as their
conceptions. Man fran
slatten och havet Op. 65a
was commissioned by the
Music Committee of
Svenska Folkskolans
Vanner, a
Swedish-speaking
educational organization
which staged a singing
festival in Vaasa in June
1912. The first
performance took place in
the final concert of the
festival with about 1300
singers in total,
although a string
accompaniment had to be
used to perform the
relatively difficult
polyphonic piece.The much
simpler Kallion kirkon
kellosavel Op. 65b was
originally composed by
Sibelius as the melody
for the carillon of a
newly built church in the
district Kallio in
Helsinki. Reports from
the consecration in
September 1912, however,
named the choir conductor
Heikki Klemetti as
composer. Sibelius
therefore felt forced to
write arrangements for
piano solo and mixed
choir a cappella and
publish them. Klemetti
eventually wrote a new
text for the latter. The
current edition includes
translations of the texts
in German and English as
well as an informative
preface that is based on
the complete edition Jean
Sibelius Works, just like
the score.

The four
choral settings in this
edition from Jean
Sibelius's Op. 18, in the
original six settings for
male choir, were arranged
for mixed choir by
Sibelius himself. While
Sortunut aani Op. 18,1
and Saarella palaa Op.
18,4 were first published
in this version in a
choral collection in
1898, Venematka Op. 18,3
was only arranged by
Sibelius in 1904 for a
summer class and Sydameni
laulu Op. 18,6 another
ten years later as a
reaction to an
unauthorized arrangement.
In the long and changeful
history of the collection
Op. 18, its contents were
extended, revised and
repositioned many times.
The four current settings
are all those that are
also present in the final
version of Op. 18 for

there are original
arrangements.The texts
for Sortunut aani (The
Broken Voice), Venematka

This volume
presents partly less
known, but undoubtedly
interesting and highly
welcome additions to the
chamber music repertoire
for violinists and
cellists in the reliable
Urtext of the Complete
Edition. The violin was
Sibelius's instrument. He
was active as a violinist
mainly during his studies
at the Helsinki Music
Institute from 1885-1889
and for a short time
thereafter. The present
volume contains Jean
Sibelius's opus-numbered
works for violin or cello
and piano, 36
compositions in total.
Most of the works of this
volume were created at
the beginning of the 20th
century and remained
unpublished until the
early 1920s. Sibelius
composed far less music
for the cello than for
the violin. Malinconia
(Op. 20), published in
1911, remained his only
opus-numbered work
exclusively for cello and
piano. This volume also
includes Two Pieces (Op.
77) and Four Pieces (Op.
78) as versions for
violin with piano and for
cello with
piano.

In the

tend to confirm Glenn
Gould's view that
Sibelius made an

several revisions, the
music composed for the
last tableau, Suomi heraa
(Finland Awakes), became
known as the tone poem
Finlandia op. 26. As an
independent work
Finlandia quickly became
part of the repertoire

most frequently played

It is the
new, young Finland that
will be described, and
the composer gives us the
description in the form
of a song, a simple,
four-part chorus,
peculiar due to certain
rhythmic accents [...].
It is a whole new folk
song, or more correctly,
[...] the song of our
democratic Finnish folk.
This is how Karl Flodin
described his first aural
impression of the tone
poem Finlandia in 1899.
In the aftermath of the
February Manifesto
implemented on 15
February 1899 by the
Russian Emperor Nicholas
II, artists expressed
their support for the
press and the freedom of
speech in diverse
cultural events arranged
in Finland in the
beginning of November
1899. A group of artists
joined forces in
arranging a performance
of six historical
tableaus. Jean Sibelius

No
longer just a facsimile:
Sibelius's Symphony No. 0
in a proper edition With
the world premiere of
Kullervo in 1892, Jean
Sibelius staked his claim
at the age of 27 to the
front ranks of the
symphonists of his day,
long before he began
writing his purely
instrumental symphonies
and tone poems. At the
same time, he defined
himself as a modern-day
Finnish composer through
his choice of the text
from the Kalevala epic,
whose title role he
interpreted with modern
psychological means. By
the time Sibelius was
celebrating his major
international triumphs in
the early 20th century,
his Symphony No. 0 was
long forgotten. After a
provisory first edition
of Kullervo in 1966, the
work quickly gained the
esteem of Sibelius
conductors who also
performed the work with
the Finnish vocal text
outside of their native
country. Yet in spite of
pioneer recordings such
as those of Paavo
Berglund, Colin Davis,
Jukka-Pekka Saraste,
Esa-Pekka Salonen and
Osmo Vanska, the
grandiose work had not
been adequately present
in international concert
life up to now not least
because there was no
practicable edition. The
volumes of the Complete
Edition edited by Glenda
Dawn Goss now offer a
musicologically accurate
music text for the first
time. This music text
will form the basis for
the projected performance
material. The complete
edition Jean Sibelius
Werke intends to pave the
way for a new evaluation
of the Finnish composer
and, in particular, of
this hitherto editorially
neglected work, the
composer's only choral
symphony.

Little is
known about the actual
composition process of
Lemminkainen and the
performance and
publication history is
rather complex, resulting
in a first complete
printing of all the four
movements en suite
through the complete
edition of Jean Sibelius
Works only in 2013.In
summer 1894 Sibelius went
to Central Europe,
carrying among others a
plan for an opera freely
based on the Kalevala in
his mind. But during this
trip he reassessed his
composing: I think I have
found my old self again,
musically speaking. I
think I really am a tone
painter and a poet. As a
result he abandoned his
opera plans, but musical
material may have found
its way into the
Lemminkainen pieces which
he started composing
during that time.
Lemminkainen became
popular from the

attained a fixed position
in the concert
repertoire.On
Lemminkainen's Return
Sibelius commented: I
would like to see more
pride in us Finns. Why
should we be ashamed?
This is the underlying
thought in Lemminkainen's
Return. Lemminkainen is
just as good as the
noblest of earls. He is
an aristocrat, without
question an
aristocrat!.
