Jean
Sibelius composed far
less music for the cello
than for the violin.
Malinconia (op. 20) -
published in 1911 but
composed in 1900 under
the title Fantasia -
remained his only
opus-numbered work
exclusively for cello and
piano. The Fantasia for
cello and piano, an early
stage of Malinconia , was
premiered at a soiree in
the Solemnity Hall of the
University of Helsinki on
12 March 1900 and was
given positive press
reviews: The work, which
mainly drew attention
with its logical and
clear structure, begins
with a powerful and
substantial cello solo,
to which the piano
responds with a
glimmering series of
arpeggiated chords. At
the end where the
instruments unite in a
harmonious, deeply
emotional song, the
harmonic impression they
create is very bright and
lovely. The autograph
manuscript of Fantasia
shows that Sibelius
omitted a larger passage
of music between the
present bars 24 and 25
and that he made further
revisions to the work,
either before the
publishing process or in
the proofs he read in
April 1911 for
Breitkopf.

The
symphonic poem Tapiola is
the final major
composition for orchestra
that Sibelius was able to
complete and publish. It
was commissiones by the
conductor Walter Damrosch
for the New York
Philharmonic and was
premiered on 26 December
1926. Taking the forest
god Tapio as name giver,
Sibelius once more got
his inspiration from
Finish mythology. The
present arrangement by
Einar Englund and Peter
Lonnqvist now allows a
performance in the course
of a chamber music
concert. By choosing the
scoring for piano for
four hands, or
alternatively for two
pianos, the arrangement
stays as close as
possible to Sibelius's
complex orchestral
texture. Tapiola is also
available in the original
version for orchestra at
Breitkopf & Hartel. The
edition takes over the
music text published in
volume I/16 of the

Jean
Sibelius overall composed
more than 100 solo songs
for voice and piano.
Volume 4 mostly contains
first editions. These
songs were generally
unknown. Only a few of
them have been available
for performers in
manuscript copies and
have also appeared on
concert programs. The
volume contains also the
first printed Sibelius'
work Serenad and in
contrast to the other two
volumes with solo-songs
it contains arrangements
for voice and piano for
the first time. Sibelius
arranged three types of
works for voice and
piano: songs from
incidental music, works
for voice and piano, and
one choral work. The
arrangements were not
made for the purpose of
producing rehearsal
scores, but rather as
genuine concert pieces to
be used in recitals.
Rarely are such
arrangements simply
reductions of the
orchestral score, as
rehearsal scores tend to
be. Instead, Sibelius
gave the piano parts of
his arrangements the same
dedication and
seriousness as he gave
his solo songs. The
independance of his
arrangements is
especially pointed to the
very virtuoso piano part
of the ballad
Koskenlaskijan morsiamet
Op. 33.

Jean
Sibelius wrote his last
two tone poems
Aallottaret op. 73 and
Tapiola op. 112 as
commissions for the
United States.
Aallottaret is the
original Finnish title of
op. 73, as is found on
the autograph. Discreetly
concealed behind this
title, however, is the
title The Oceanides,
which also stems from
Sibelius, and which
Breitkopf & Hartel gladly
placed in first position
for the first edition of
1915, thus facilitating
the diffusion of the
work. The previously
unpublished early version
of Aallottaret is also
presented in the volume
of the Complete Edition;
it had been hastily
rejected shortly before
the world premiere.
Compared with this
genesis, the origin of
Tapiola , Sibelius last
great symphonic poem, is
relatively unspectacular:
though he was under
pressure to write and
publish the work,
Sibelius produced no
different versions. There
was only one printed
edition from Breitkopf
and no further revisions.
Thanks are given to
Professor Nors S.
Josephson for his
valuable work on this
volume, the editing of
which he began.

After
preparing his Scenes
historiques op. 66 for
print in spring 1912,
Sibelius had many grand
plans but had to turn
towards more profitable
piano works first, due to
his financial situation.
Within only one month, he
wrote the Three Sonatinas
op. 67 in June 1912,
which were published by
Breitkopf already in
November the same year.
Although by his own
accounts he did not like
writing for piano and
only doing it for income,
he told in 1948 Erik
Tawaststjerna that he
regarded the Sonatinas
among his best chamber
music and considered them
equal to his string
quartet 'Voces intimae'.
Advanced pianists with a
penchant for Sibelius's
music can welcome this
publication with
unalloyed happiness.

In
the fall of 1909 Sibelius
wrote in his diary: At
Koli! One of the greatest
impressions in my life.
Plans [for] 'La
Montagne'! These plans
proved to be for the
Fourth Symphony. The
composition process was
not an easy one and in
the end - according to
his diary - Sibelius was
struggling with God! and
only just able to finish
the work in time for the
premiere in spring 1911:
My new symphony is a
total protest against
present-day compositions.
Nothing - absolutely
nothing of the circus [in
it]. This extraordinary
work was at first found
difficult to understand
although its technical
brilliance was
recognized. The
appreciation of the
Fourth has, however,
grown in the course of
years.

The
Complete Edition Jean
Sibelius Works has made a
big step forward with
this volume: the
publication of all piano
works which the composer
personally supplied with
opus numbers, thus
bequeathing them to
posterity in an
authorized form. The
piano pieces with opus
numbers ranging between
85 and 114 were written
partly during World War I
and, more importantly,
during the first post-war
years up to 1924. This is
when for various reasons,
and not only for lack of
funds Sibelius once again
applied himself
intensively to the
composition of piano
pieces. The more than 40
works eloquently refute
the claim that the
composer had little
esteem for the piano.
With the little
collection of op. 114,
Sibelius leads us into
the memorable year 1929,
when he ended his
compositional activity
once and for all.

The famous
Valse triste grew out of
the incidental music to
Arvid Jarnefelts drama
Kuolema (Death). After
the first staged
performances in December
1903 at the Finnish
National Theater in
Helsinki, Sibelius
expanded the original
string scoring by adding
winds and timpani. It is
in this form that the
work was first heard at
the University of
Helsinki's festival hall
on 25 April 1904 under
the direction of the
composer before it set
out to conquer the
musical world.
The
Valse triste is part of
the incidental music in
several movements which
Sibelius composed in
1903. Freed from its
functional framework, the
concert version of the
Valse triste, written
shortly thereafter, set
out to conquer the
musical world.
