The choral collection Mozart · Haydn contains sacred music of two famous pairs of composers from the Viennese classical school: father and son Leopold and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the brothers Joseph and Johann Michael Haydn. Works selected for this collection include Latin and German settings, canons, motets and movements from the Ordinary of the Mass for a cappella choir or with keyboard accompaniment. The choice of works has been made not only with a view to the broadest possible practical use, but also to providing a selection ranging in difficulty from easy to moderately difficult. Leopoldi pro festo Innocentium MH 837, written for the choir boys of the Salzburg Cathedral, was the last completed work of Johann Michael Haydn. Haydn composed more than thirty works to Latin and German settings for his “beloved choir boys” in a scoring for two or three treble voices. Haydn’s Missa Sancti Joannis Nepomuceni, dated 21 May 1772, is dedicated to the Bohemian martyr and patron “Saint of bridges, ” Johannes Nepomuk [ca. 1340–1393, canonized in 1729]. Despite the addition of woodwinds and brass to the three-part string section, the Mass is in a comparatively simple, compact form as was expressly required by Count Hieronymus Colloredo, Haydn’s second employer in Salzburg. Even in the final sections of the Gloria and Credo Haydn forgoes not only vocal virtuosity, but also the polyphonic artifices which traditionally characterize these passages in the Mass.
