Citadelâ
s Destiny is a march
that can be performed
either in concert or on
parade. It was
commissioned by the
Musique de lâInfanterie

feature is that it
adheres to the
conventional codes of
military marches, albeit
with a modern twist. The
title refers to the
citadel built by Vauban
in Lille, âThe Queen of
Citadelsâ, with which
the band shares a
destiny. This march is
still performed by the
Infantry Band as part of
their traditional concert
repertoire.

â??Summer

EugĂšne Bozza (1905-1991)
is a famous Flute
Quartet, published in
1955. Technically and
musically challenging,
this piece was written
for advanced flautists.
Summer days in the

four movements: 1.
Pastorale, 2. Au bord du

fĂŽrets, 4. Ronde. These
four movements are all
well-crafted to captivate
the attention of the
flautists (with their
technicality, tempo and
musicality) but also
those of the audience.
EugĂšne Bozza won
different prizes at the
Conservatoire de Paris

the Grand Prix de Rome.

This exceptional
collection of 41 truly
beautiful airs and
ballads from the British
Isles offers both
well-known tunes by the
prolific blind Irish
harpist, Turlough
Oâ??Carolan and rarely
heard melodies by
anonymous composers; all
have stood the test of
time. Arranged for
soprano or tenor
recorder, these include
Oâ??Carolanâ??s
classically influenced
â??Lord Inchiquinâ? and
â??Eleanor Plunkettâ? as
well as â??O Gentle
Doveâ? and â??Cuckoo
Dearâ?â?? both examples
of the strong tradition
of song in Wales. Among
other tunes, the haunting
modal melodies of â??The
Dark Slender Boyâ? and
â??Enchanted Valleyâ?
express the melancholic
heart and soul of the
British Isles.
A
few of these songs have
taken on a life of their
own in modern times.
â??Bonny at Mornâ?, a
popular traditional tune
of northern England and
Scotland, was arranged
for soprano voice and
harp by the 20th century
British composer,
Benjamin Britten. â??The
Skye Boat Songâ?
originally recounted
Bonnie Prince Charles
Edward Stuartâ??s journey
to the Isle of Skye after
his defeat at the
historic Battle of
Culloden. Later, the song
evolved into a lilting
lullaby and was more
recently used as the
theme song for the
popular Outlander
television
series.
Departing
slightly from recorder
notation practice, author
Marcia Diehl has
judiciously arranged
these melodies complete
with spare slur markings
to aid the amateur player
in authentically and
musically rendering these
tunes.

In 1989, the
demonstration named the
Baltic Way also
known as the Baltic
Chainâ was held in the
Baltic states of Estonia,
Latvia and Lithuania by
its citizens in a call
for independence from the
Soviet Union. On 23rd
August 1989, some two
million participants
formed a human chain,
hand-in-hand all the way
from the Estonian capital
of Tallinn its Latvian
counterpart, Riga,
through to the Lithuanian
capital of Vilnius - six
hundred kilometres long.
It became the longest
human chain ever created
and turned out to be the
final push needed for
much sought-after
independence. This
historic event became the
source of inspiration for
this composition. The
introduction of thefirst
movement, âStruggle for
Independenceâ, is based
on a nocturne for piano
by the renowned
Lithuanian composer and
painter Mikalojus
Konstantinas iurlionis
(1875-1911), thematic
material from which has
been incorporated
throughout the whole
composition. The
melancholic beginning is
followed by a powerful
theme which reflects the
resolve of the Baltic
people. The sudden
aggressive, dissonant
chords and a dominant
andâin rhythmic
termsâcontrary bass
drum announce that the
resistance is not going
smoothly. Just for a
moment, we hear the
anthem of the Soviet
Union in the lower brass,
but this is relentlessly
pushed to the background
by the rest of the band
playing the Lithuanian
national anthem,
âTautiĆĄka giesm â
(Lithuania, our
homeland). The second
movement, âDecades of
Sufferingâ, echoes life
under the Soviet Union's
thumb. In the pursuit of
independence, a peaceful
protest is planned in
which a human chain is
formed across the Baltic
states of Estonia, Latvia
and Lithuania. This
âChain of Freedomâ is
depicted in the final
movement of the work.
De Baltische Weg
(The Baltic Way)
was een demonstratie van
de bevolking van de
Baltische staten die in
1989 plaatsvond als een
roep om onafhankelijkheid
van de Sovjet-Unie. Deze
historische gebeurtenis
vormde de inspiratiebron
voor deze compositie. Van
Vilnius via Riga naar
Tallinn werd een
zeshonderd kilometer
lange keten van naar
schatting twee miljoen
mensen gevormd. Op 23
augustus 1989 gaven al
die mensen elkaar de hand
en werd De Baltische Weg
de langste menselijke
keten ooit. Het bleek de
uiteindelijke opmaat tot
de zo gewenste
onafhankelijkheid. De
inleiding van het eerste
deel, âStruggle for
Independenceâ, is
gebaseerd op een nocturne
voor piano van
devooraanstaande Litouwse
componist en
kunstschilder Mikalojus
Konstantinas iurlionis
(1875-1911). Het
thematische materiaal van
deze nocturne is door de
hele compositie heen
verwerkt. Na het
melancholische begin
volgt een krachtig thema,
waarmee de strijdbaarheid
van de Baltische
bevolking wordt
uitgebeeld. De
plotselinge agressieve
dissonante akkoorden en
een dominante en ritmisch
gezien tegendraadse grote
trom laten horen dat het
verzet niet eenvoudig
verloopt. Even klinkt het
begin van het volkslied
van de Sovjet-Unie in het
lage koper, maar dat
wordt door de rest van de
band onverbiddelijk naar
de achtergrond verwezen
door het Litouwse
nationale volkslied
âTautiĆĄka giesm â
(Litouwen, ons
vaderland). In deel twee,
âDecades of
Sufferingâ, wordt het
leven onder het juk van
de Sovjet-Unie verklankt.
In het streven naar
onafhankelijkheid worden
plannen gemaakt om als
vreedzaam protest tegen
de onderdrukking een
menselijke keten te
vormen over de wegen van
de Baltische staten
Litouwen, Letland en
Estland. Deze âChain of
Freedomâ wordt in het
laatste deel van het werk
muzikaal weergegeven.
Der sogenannte
Baltischer Weg (The
Baltic Way) auch
unter dem Namen Baltische
Kette bekannt war 1989
eine Demonstration von
BĂŒrgern in den
baltischen Staaten
Estland, Lettland und
Litauen mit dem Aufruf
zur UnabhÀngigkeit von
der Sowjetunion. Am 23.
August 1989 bildeten rund
zwei Millionen Teilnehmer
eine sechshundert
Kilometer lange
Menschenkette, die von
der estnischen Hauptstadt
Tallinn ĂŒber das
lettische Riga bis zur
litauischen Hauptstadt
Vilnius reichte. Die
lÀngste Menschenkette,
die jemals geschaffen
wurde, erwies sich als
der letzte Schritt, der
zur lang ersehnten
UnabhĂ€ngigkeit fĂŒhrte.
Dieses historische
Ereignis diente der
Komposition
alsInspirationsquelle.
Die Einleitung des ersten
Satzes, Struggle for
Independenceâ, basiert
auf einem Nocturne fĂŒr
Klavier des bekannten
litauischen Komponisten
und Malers Mikalojus
Konstantinas iurlionis
(1875 1911), dessen
thematisches Material in
der gesamten Komposition
verwendet wird. Dem
melancholischen Anfang
folgt ein mitreiĂendes
Thema, das die
Entschlossenheit der
baltischen Bevölkerung
widerspiegelt. Die
plötzlichen aggressiven,
dissonanten Akkorde und
eine dominante und
rhythmisch gegenlÀufige
Bewegung in der
Basstrommel kĂŒndigen an,
dass der Widerstand nicht
reibungslos verlÀuft.
FĂŒr einen kurzen Moment
erklingt die Hymne der
Sowjetunion in den tiefen
BlechblÀsern, aber diese
wird unerbittlich vom
restlichen Orchester in
den Hintergrund
gedrÀngt, welches die
litauische Nationalhymne
TautiĆĄka giesm â
(Litauen, unser
Heimatlandâ) spielt.
Der zweite Satz, Decades
of Sufferingâ, spiegelt
das Leben unter dem Joch
der Sowjetunion wider.
FĂŒr das Streben nach
UnabhÀngigkeit war ein
friedlicher Protest
geplant, bei dem eine
Menschenkette durch die
baltischen Staaten
Estland, Lettland und
Litauen gebildet wurde.
Diese Chain of Freedomâ
wird im letzten Satz des
Werkes beschrieben.

In 1989, the
demonstration named the
Baltic Way also
known as the Baltic
Chainâ was held in the
Baltic states of Estonia,
Latvia and Lithuania by
its citizens in a call
for independence from the
Soviet Union. On 23rd
August 1989, some two
million participants
formed a human chain,
hand-in-hand all the way
from the Estonian capital
of Tallinn its Latvian
counterpart, Riga,
through to the Lithuanian
capital of Vilnius - six
hundred kilometres long.
It became the longest
human chain ever created
and turned out to be the
final push needed for
much sought-after
independence. This
historic event became the
source of inspiration for
this composition. The
introduction of thefirst
movement, âStruggle for
Independenceâ, is based
on a nocturne for piano
by the renowned
Lithuanian composer and
painter Mikalojus
Konstantinas iurlionis
(1875-1911), thematic
material from which has
been incorporated
throughout the whole
composition. The
melancholic beginning is
followed by a powerful
theme which reflects the
resolve of the Baltic
people. The sudden
aggressive, dissonant
chords and a dominant
andâin rhythmic
termsâcontrary bass
drum announce that the
resistance is not going
smoothly. Just for a
moment, we hear the
anthem of the Soviet
Union in the lower brass,
but this is relentlessly
pushed to the background
by the rest of the band
playing the Lithuanian
national anthem,
âTautiĆĄka giesm â
(Lithuania, our
homeland). The second
movement, âDecades of
Sufferingâ, echoes life
under the Soviet Union's
thumb. In the pursuit of
independence, a peaceful
protest is planned in
which a human chain is
formed across the Baltic
states of Estonia, Latvia
and Lithuania. This
âChain of Freedomâ is
depicted in the final
movement of the work.
De Baltische Weg
(The Baltic Way)
was een demonstratie van
de bevolking van de
Baltische staten die in
1989 plaatsvond als een
roep om onafhankelijkheid
van de Sovjet-Unie. Deze
historische gebeurtenis
vormde de inspiratiebron
voor deze compositie. Van
Vilnius via Riga naar
Tallinn werd een
zeshonderd kilometer
lange keten van naar
schatting twee miljoen
mensen gevormd. Op 23
augustus 1989 gaven al
die mensen elkaar de hand
en werd De Baltische Weg
de langste menselijke
keten ooit. Het bleek de
uiteindelijke opmaat tot
de zo gewenste
onafhankelijkheid. De
inleiding van het eerste
deel, âStruggle for
Independenceâ, is
gebaseerd op een nocturne
voor piano van
devooraanstaande Litouwse
componist en
kunstschilder Mikalojus
Konstantinas iurlionis
(1875-1911). Het
thematische materiaal van
deze nocturne is door de
hele compositie heen
verwerkt. Na het
melancholische begin
volgt een krachtig thema,
waarmee de strijdbaarheid
van de Baltische
bevolking wordt
uitgebeeld. De
plotselinge agressieve
dissonante akkoorden en
een dominante en ritmisch
gezien tegendraadse grote
trom laten horen dat het
verzet niet eenvoudig
verloopt. Even klinkt het
begin van het volkslied
van de Sovjet-Unie in het
lage koper, maar dat
wordt door de rest van de
band onverbiddelijk naar
de achtergrond verwezen
door het Litouwse
nationale volkslied
âTautiĆĄka giesm â
(Litouwen, ons
vaderland). In deel twee,
âDecades of
Sufferingâ, wordt het
leven onder het juk van
de Sovjet-Unie verklankt.
In het streven naar
onafhankelijkheid worden
plannen gemaakt om als
vreedzaam protest tegen
de onderdrukking een
menselijke keten te
vormen over de wegen van
de Baltische staten
Litouwen, Letland en
Estland. Deze âChain of
Freedomâ wordt in het
laatste deel van het werk
muzikaal weergegeven.
Der sogenannte
Baltischer Weg (The
Baltic Way) auch
unter dem Namen Baltische
Kette bekannt war 1989
eine Demonstration von
BĂŒrgern in den
baltischen Staaten
Estland, Lettland und
Litauen mit dem Aufruf
zur UnabhÀngigkeit von
der Sowjetunion. Am 23.
August 1989 bildeten rund
zwei Millionen Teilnehmer
eine sechshundert
Kilometer lange
Menschenkette, die von
der estnischen Hauptstadt
Tallinn ĂŒber das
lettische Riga bis zur
litauischen Hauptstadt
Vilnius reichte. Die
lÀngste Menschenkette,
die jemals geschaffen
wurde, erwies sich als
der letzte Schritt, der
zur lang ersehnten
UnabhĂ€ngigkeit fĂŒhrte.
Dieses historische
Ereignis diente der
Komposition
alsInspirationsquelle.
Die Einleitung des ersten
Satzes, Struggle for
Independenceâ, basiert
auf einem Nocturne fĂŒr
Klavier des bekannten
litauischen Komponisten
und Malers Mikalojus
Konstantinas iurlionis
(1875 1911), dessen
thematisches Material in
der gesamten Komposition
verwendet wird. Dem
melancholischen Anfang
folgt ein mitreiĂendes
Thema, das die
Entschlossenheit der
baltischen Bevölkerung
widerspiegelt. Die
plötzlichen aggressiven,
dissonanten Akkorde und
eine dominante und
rhythmisch gegenlÀufige
Bewegung in der
Basstrommel kĂŒndigen an,
dass der Widerstand nicht
reibungslos verlÀuft.
FĂŒr einen kurzen Moment
erklingt die Hymne der
Sowjetunion in den tiefen
BlechblÀsern, aber diese
wird unerbittlich vom
restlichen Orchester in
den Hintergrund
gedrÀngt, welches die
litauische Nationalhymne
TautiĆĄka giesm â
(Litauen, unser
Heimatlandâ) spielt.
Der zweite Satz, Decades
of Sufferingâ, spiegelt
das Leben unter dem Joch
der Sowjetunion wider.
FĂŒr das Streben nach
UnabhÀngigkeit war ein
friedlicher Protest
geplant, bei dem eine
Menschenkette durch die
baltischen Staaten
Estland, Lettland und
Litauen gebildet wurde.
Diese Chain of Freedomâ
wird im letzten Satz des
Werkes beschrieben.

Odysseus and twelve of

fallen asleep, he and his
men stabbed a glowing
spike into the Cyclopâs

blinding him. They
escaped by clinging to
the belliesof some sheep.
Once aboard, Odysseus
taunted the Cyclop by
revealing him his true
identity. Enraged,
Polyphemus hurled rocks
at the ship, trying to
sink it. After leaving
the Cyclopesâ island,
they arrived at the home
of Aeolus, ruler of the

Odysseus a bag trapping
all the strong winds

one which would take him
straight back to Ithaca.
As the ship came within

Odysseus and his crew

The survivors went next

Odysseus sent out a

With the help of an

about the dangers he

way back home. She
advised him to avoid
hearing the song of the
Sirens; but if he really
felt he had to hear,
thenhe should be tied to
the mast of the ship,
which he did. Odysseus
then successfully steered
his crew past Charybdis

Scylla (a multiple-headed

Odysseus and hissurviving

laatste deel heeft
Excalibur als onderwerp:

Moonlight
Serenade is often
said to be the Glenn
Miller Orchestraâs
signature tune, capturing
the very best of what it
had to offer. It was
recorded for the first
time in 1939 and only
made the B-side of the
disc with Sunrise
Serenade featuring on
the A-side. Moonlight
Serenade gained very
rapid and unexpected
success and this
arrangement will give
your concert band that
famous big band sound!

Lascia
châio pianga (Let Me
Weep) is een aria uit
de opera Rinaldo.
Aaron Hill schreef het
scenario, waarna Giacomo
Rossi de poëtische
teksten schreef. Georg
Friedrich HĂ€ndel voorzag
deze later van muziek.
Hij zou demuziek in
veertien dagen hebben
gecomponeerd en veel
melodieën uit eerdere
werken hebben gebruikt.
In 1711 werd
Rinaldo voor het
eerst uitgevoerd. De
melodie van deze
prachtige aria is

Four roads
lead to Santiago, so
begins the Book of the
Pilgrim. Written in the
12th century, the Codex
Calixtinus opened the way
for pilgrimage from most
cities in Europe and
North Africa to Santiago
de Compostela, in Spain.
Compostela - The Way
of St James describes
the pilgrims' journey.
After a slow
introduction, a brilliant
theme announces the start
of the journey. The
arrival in Spain is
indicated by incantatory
chants and majestic
chords. Finally, the
music softens as the
pilgrims venerate St
James.
âEr

Codex Calixtinus,

de weg voor pelgrimages

in Europa en Noord-Afrika
naar het Spaanse Santiago

Compostela - The Way
of St James
(Compostela de weg van de
heilige Jakobus) is een
beschrijving van zoân
pelgrimstocht. Na een
langzame inleiding
kondigt een stralend
thema het begin van de
reis aan. De aankomst in
Spanje wordt gemarkeerd
door bezwerende
melodieën en majestueuze
akkoorden. Tot slot wordt
de muziek zachter om de
diepe eerbied van de
pelgrims voor de heilige
Jakobus te verklanken.
