Handelâ??
s â??Semeleâ?, which
premiered in February
1744, is based on an
adapted version of
William Congreveâ??s
opera libretto titled
â??The Story of
Semeleâ?, originally
published in 1706.
However, neither Handel
nor his librettist
referred to
â??Semeleâ? as an
opera or an oratorio,
which, according to the
understanding at the
time, would have required
a biblical and/or
Christian subject matter.
Contemporary audiences
also disagreed on the
genre. The problematic
classification as an
oratorio has persisted
into the present day,
likely due to the edition
labeled as such by
Chrysander. The â??Halle
Handel Editionâ? (HHA)
distances itself from
this classification and,
considering the available
sources, refrains from
assigning a genre
label.
Congreve
deviates from the
mythological source
multiple times in order
to create tensions among
the characters. The
desired marriage between
Semele and Athamas, whom
she does not love, is an
addition by Congreve to
provoke the envy of her
sister Ino, who desires
Athamas herself.
Therefore, Ino sees her
own advantage in
Semeleâ??s abduction by
Jupiter. While
Jupiterâ??s wife Juno
decides to destroy Semele
out of jealousy for his
relationship with her,
Jupiter brings Ino to his
palace to console Semele.
The vengeful Juno takes
advantage of Inoâ??s
presence and transforms
into her likeness,
persuading Semele to
carry out a plan that
later proves fatal. In
the end, Ino emerges as
the winner, as she is
able to convince their
father, Cadmus, to marry
her to Athamas. The
appearance of Apollo in
the final scene to
announce that Semeleâ??s
immortal son Bacchus was
saved from her ashes
provides little
consolation. However,
this twist allows the
drama to conclude with
exuberant joy and a
magnificent final chorus
after the tragic scenes
in the third act,
culminating in the death
of the
protagonist.
Hande
lâ??s autograph score
shows significant
deviations from and
numerous revisions of the
original version
premiered. All surviving
early versions, the
musical movements deleted
before the premiere, and
the version of the
December 1744, are given
in the appendix to the
HHA.

klezmer music but derives
from a much older
cantorial mode, also
known under several other
titles including the
Ahava Rabbah mode, the
Mode of Supplication, and
Altered Phrygian mode. It
is used for the setting
of ‘Ahava
Rabbah’, or
‘abounding
love’, the
Ashkenazi prayer and
blessing sung during the
synagogue morning
services. When performed,
either in synagogue or in
a klezmer setting, the
mode can be developed
into a variety of short
phrases and melodic
forms. Jeremy Arden has
taken this beautiful
irregular scale and
filtered its melodic
forms through my own
musical sensibilities to
create a dialogue between

Rossini's Barber of
Seville is still
considered to this day as
one of the most loved and
best recognized classical
works in the world. This
music has been included
in many forms of media,

with the tuba ensemble in
the orchestral role. The
provided cadenza is there
only as a guideline to

premiere at the Kentucky
Music Educators
Association Conference in
Feb. 2013. It was
requested and performed

Ensemble under the

I
started this collection
during the Covid-19
lockdown, when I felt an
intense need to write
music that was personal
and overtly emotional.
Each Sad Piano piece
explores a different
emotion or frame of mind:
from inner fury to love
and sentimentality to the
resilience many of us
needed to get through

was commissioned by the
Hilliard Ensemble and
first performed by them
at its summer Festival of
Voices in Lewes, Sussex,
in August 1988. It was
the first piece I wrote
for the ensemble and I
focused on the singers'
unique ability to move
with ease from early
music to tonal music of
the present day. There
were techniques which I
asked for which I hardly
needed to notate - the
staggered breathing of
the two tenors to supply
a continuous unbroken
held note for example -
and the piece moves
between passages for solo
voices and sections of
highly chromatic
homophony, almost as if
the music were switching
between the 12th century
of Perotin and the 16th
century of Gesualdo. Each
of the four voices is
given its own solo
passage, sometimes
accompanied, sometimes
quietly supported by the
other voices.The title,
Glorious Hill comes from
the name of the
small-town Mississippi
setting of Tennessee
Williams' Summer and
Smoke. I wrote the music
for the 1987 production
of this play at the
Leicester Haymarket
Theatre, the first time I
had written any
incidental music for the
stage. Williams makes
very specific demands in
terms of music and there
is one particularly
powerful scene, the
penultimate one,
throughout which music
and atmospheric sound
effects are continuous.
The principle character
Alma argues passionately
about the vital
importance of human
choice with the man to
whom she has, too late,
admitted her love. I
watched this section
every night throughout
the 4 week run of the
play watching the
different ways in which
the actress, Frances
Barber, played the scene.
There is a powerful
emotional and
philosophical connection
between the imagery of
this scene and a passage
from the Renaissance
philosopher Pico della
Mirandola's Oration on
the Dignity of Man which
forms the text of
Glorious Hill. This
passage has been
described as one of the
few passages in
Renaissance philosophy to
treat human freedom in a
modern way. The text,
which is sung in Latin,
is addressed by God to
Adam before the fall from
