Origi
nal music This Christmas
title is well-known for
its use in J.S. Bach's
Christmas Oratorio. Hymn
writer Fred Pratt Green
has added two
contemporary stanzas
which brings the meaning
into our lives today with
words such as, Come,
dearest child, into our
hearts, and leave your
crib behind you! Let this
be where the new life
starts for all who seek
and find you. The new,
original music soars in
melodic grandeur. Useful
for Christmas and the
season of Epiphany -
calling to break forth, O
heavenly light!.

Favart, Charles
Simon.
For his
ParisCythere assiegee,
Gluck drew on his
eponymous opera comique
from 1759, transforming
it into an opera-ballet.
The libretto which was
expanded by Charles Simon
Favart was adapted: Gluck
added recitative
passages, reworked
individual sections and
also added his own
compositions, modifying
them in parts. By March
1775, the compositional
work had progressed
sufficiently for Gluck to
leave behind a copy of
the score as he departed
from Paris. However, he
was unable to supervise
rehearsals or be present
at the premiere (1 August
1775) or any of the
subsequent 21
performances. Due to
these particular
circumstances, three
versions of the work are
to be distinguished: the
original version, the
performed version and the
printed
version.
This
edition ofCythere
assiegeecontains the
original version of the
main part and is printed
here for the first time.
The reconstruction which
was necessary in order to
determine the original
form of this opera draws
on all orchestral parts,
the printed score and
with regard to a large
gap in Act III, pages
were taken from the score
copy. The four-part
appendix includes the
changes made to this
score copy, sections that
deviate from the printed
score as well as the
final version of Act III,
also from the printed
score. The last part of
the appendix also
presents a Divertissement
in six movements by
Berton, which is only
available as a rare
contemporary set of
printed parts.
The
Foreword offers detailed
information regarding the
work's genesis, subject
matter, preparations for
performance and print,
premiere, reception, and
this edition. Selected
pages from significant
musical sources, the
libretto of the premiere
performance, and images
illuminating the
performance context, have
been added as
facsimiles.

I was
tempted to call the piece
Throw Back because it
consciously employs
rhythmic and harmonic
approaches characteristic
of the earlier part of
the twentieth century,
much of which plays a
part in forging my
musical personality.
Going along with the
impetus, I have paid
homage by subtly
interpolating stylistic
or actual references to
such unexpected
bedfellows as Scriabin,
Ravel, Debussy, Piston,
Roussel, and Ysaye. I
hope I will be musically
forgiven. In one
continuous movement,
there are three definite
internal sections:
Presto-Largo-Allegro. The
first section opens with
a very soft percussion
cadenza. If the acoustics
allow it, the player will
use sponge pottery
mallets (sponge-headed
mallets employed to
smooth the interior of a
pot as it is being
spin-dried). No matter
how hard the
percussionist strikes the
drums, the dynamic cannot
go above pp (pianissimo).
This cadenza serves as a
basis for the first
movement. The elements of
the cadenza are taken by
the orchestra to make the
first major statement,
similar to the classical
concerto; but rather than
making a restatement, the
soloists, when they come
in, begin with
variational ideas. The
second section is given
over to the soloists, and
is lyrical. The third
section begins with an
alternation between
strict rhythmic pulsation
and free-sounding
timbres, as if reluctant
to leave the second
section behind. The
rhythmic aspect takes
over more and more as the
piece progresses toward
its conclusion. Double
Play was commissioned by
the Saint Paul Chamber
Orchestra with financial
assistance from the
Northwest Area
Foundation. It received
its premiere on January
7, 1983, in St. Paul,
with the St. Paul Chamber
Orchestra; Pinchas
Zukerman, violinist; Marc
Neikrug, piano; and the
composer conducting.

African Jigsaw looks at
the problem of
urbanisation, its effects
on traditional tribal
African life and the
casualties left in its
wake. Africa's shanty
towns are home to the
victims of 'progress'.
Many have abandoned their
tribal traditions as the
land has failed to
support them and their
families. They are drawn
by the material
attraction of the cities
and arrive with great
hopes of work and
prosperity. But many are
disappointed and can only
eke out a humiliating
existence in the shanty
towns. For the sad
fathers and mothers they
leave behind on the land,
there is a growing
realisation that the old
way of life is slowly
dying out. African Jigsaw
concerns a problem facing
all developing countries
and does not pretend the
solution is a simple one.
But seeing the pieces of
the jigsaw may help young
and old alike to come to
an understanding of the
situation and, perhaps,
to draw their own
conclusions on its rights
and wrongs.
