Par JANACEK LEOS. Leos Janacek, almost seventy years old, characterised the wind sextet he had just finished as 'a kind of memory of youth' in a letter to Kamila Stösslová. The suite Youth was written in the summer of 1924, prompted by the composer's need to take stock on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Janacek also heard the Parisian ensemble Societe moderne des instruments a vent several times in Salzburg and Brno. He expanded the classic quintet scoring by the addition of a bass clarinet. Janacek referred to an earlier part of his life in this work not only by quoting a theme from March of the Blue Boys, but particularly through his general freshness ofexpression, astute humour and use of form which adhered to the classical style. The piece was enthusiastically received by both critics and the public and appeared in print as early as 1925 issued by the Prague publisher Hudebni matice. Janacek's intimate chamber-music drama about the passionate love of a simple farm boy for a beautiful gypsy girl is one of his great vocal masterpieces. This cycle of 22 songs for tenor (an alto and three female voices/female choir SSA are added in three numbers) was composed on a setting of poems that were published anonymously. It was not until 80 years later that their author was identified as the regional poet and writer Ozef Kalda. The cycle also contains theatrical elements, such as the alto entrance and exit cues and lighting effects. Composed in 1917-19, the Diary was premiered in Brno in 1921 from a manuscript prepared by Gustav Homola. The same manuscript served as abasis for the first edition which was issued by the Brno publisher Oldrich Pazdirek in 1921 as well as for this current first Urtext edition. Par JANACEK LEOS. One of Leos Janàcek 's last chamber music works was written in the autumn of 1926 at the suggestion of the pianist Otakar Hollmann (1894& 1967), an invalid from the First World War. Like his contemporary Paul Wittgenstein, Hollmann urged composers to write something for Piano left hand; he succeeded in winning over Bohuslav Martinu, Erwin Schulhoff and Janàcek to do this. Janàcek did not want, as he put it, to compose a ; dance for one leg, but finally wrote a four-movement work with associations to military music, scored for Piano, Flute (Piccolo), two Trumpets, three Trombones (preferably valveTrombones because of the fast passages) and a tenor Tuba. The French Horn was allowed by the composer to substitute the Tuba. The Capriccio was premiered by Otakar Hollmann and members of the Czech Philharmonic in Prague on 2 March 1928 in the presence of the enthusiastic composer. Par JANACEK LEOS. Janácek's 2nd String Quartet, Intimate Letters, is regarded as a highlight of the modern string quartet literature. It was written during the composer’s last year of life, between 29 January and 19 February 1928, inspired by the ageing Janáèek's exceptional love for Kamila Stösslová. The Moravian Quartet devoted themselves to this impressive work; Janácek attended a total of three of their rehearsals in May and June 1928. This had several consequences, including his abandoning his original idea of using a viola d'amore. After Janácek's unexpected death (12 August 1928) the uncertain genesis of the work became the greatest problem of the IntimateLetters : the surviving copies were not definitively authorised. The editors of this new edition have reverted to Janácek's autograph sketches as the main, most reliable source and using these as a basis, have reconstructed the work as it stood at the point of Janácek's death. The rhapsody for orchestra “Taras Bulba” is the most important and on account of its genesis the most interesting of the three programmatic orchestral works the composer wrote between 1914 and 1920.
