Bläser, genau wie
Bogenbewegung für
Streicher, mussflexibel
in ihrer Auslegung und
Durchführung sein. Die
richtige Spielweise
ergibt aus dem
technischen Können und
der Ausdrucksstärke
des jeweiligen Spielers.
Der Dirigent sollte dies
zusammen mit seinem

This
intriguing 11-minute work
builds on alternations
between declamatory
unmetered phrases
(beginning as
“sonorous, rubato,
with great aplomb and
resonanceâ€) and
strictly motoric rhythmic
sections, developing in
waves of increasing drama
and intensity.
Commissioned by the
Naumburg Foundation for
pianist Xiaohui
Yang’s Carnegie
Hall premiere. Ballade
is a one-movement work of
approximately 11 minutes,
divided into three main
parts that are played
without significant
break.Ballade alternates
sections where the
performer is invited to
apply great interpretive
freedom, especially on
the temporal plane, with
contrasting sections that
are quite precise and
rhythmic. Although
carefully notated, the
“freerâ€
sections (often marked
rubato) certainly allude
at times to the kind of
repertoire that is
familiar to most concert
pianists, doing so not by
way of quotation but by
the type of expressivity,
affect, and even
passagework. Thus, the
performer should think of
the score as a
“blueprint,â€
where the many
descriptive words I have
inserted throughout the
score (ranging from
sonorous, rubato, with
great aplomb and
resonance as the work
begins, to with greater
motion, in a series of
ever-expanding
“waves†later
on) are intended to act
as triggers for
one’s sense of
imagination and fantasy
to take off and bring the
music alive! An
inscription in the score
urges the pianist to play
fearlessly and
exuberantly, but also
tenderly!

In
Kirmo Lintinen's Rondo
burlesque (2007-2008) for
bassoon and piano , the
qualitative elements of
the bar, with their
upbeats, accents and GPs,
create a refined musical
rhetoric and are very
much to the fore. At the
premiere, Lintinen's
manner of playing, with
its sparing use of the
pedal obscuring the first
beat but not the sense of
time, underlined the
inherent character of the
piece. The roguish poetic
metres gambolled jerkily
along, and although at
surface level the music
may appear guileless,
Lintinen knows his
polyphony, judging by the
capital roving of his
voices even in the
homophonic textures.
Kirmo Lintinen (b. 1967)
is a man of many musical
talents: composer,
pianist and conductor.
His catalogue encompasses
almost all gen-res and
categories of
composition, from solo
work to opera, and he
operates with ease from
one to another without
being a crossover artist;
in his case, the
versatility is both
internalised and innate.
He often finds
inspiration in French
music of the 1920s and
its intrinsic musicality.
Humour and playfulness
are characteristic
elements of his music, as
are a natural, musicianly
approach and an
enchantingly
effervescent, even
tongue-in-cheek
texture.

DRIVING
MUSIC was commissioned by
the New York Classical
Players for their
inaugural concert.
Thework took inspiration
from Needham’s
seemingly-constant travel
schedule in the spring
and summer of2010. The
work was written, in
part, in various cities
across the country, on a
number of planes, and
innumerous car rides (as
a passenger, of course).
To highlight the
composer’s
travels, the work is cast
ina series of contrasting
musical vignettes, with
each section representing
a place Needham was in
whilesketching the
work.

Herz an Herz,
as the title implies
(heart to heart), is a
love duet. Two distinct
voices, characterised
through their respective
male and female vocal
registers, negotiate a
warm, heartfelt melody
through a loosely
strophic form. Initially
the voices sing in turn,
each section - or verse -
led predominantly by one.
Each time their lines
entwine, virtuosic
flourishes ascend the
keyboard, interrupting to
render them silent again.
It is only after one
particularly tumultuous
episode that the true
duet appears: Out of the
murky resonances of the
lowest “Aâ€
emerges the throbbing
chords and impassioned
vocal lines from
WagnerÂ’s famous duet,
O sink hernieder, Nacht
der Liebefrom the second
act of Tristan und
Isolde. The 'singers',
now reconciled, come
together for one final
verse before a fleeting
memory of the beginning
gently ushers in the end
of the piece. Herz an
Herz was awarded 1st
prize in William Howard's
Love Song Composing
Competition and was
premiered on 26th April
2017 at Hoxton Hall,
London, by William
Howard.

Chilingirian String
Quartet. Quoting Wood: In
my Second and Third
Quartets I attempted
sectional, agglutinative
forms: in my Fourth I
return to the
conventional four
movement form of my First
Quartet of 1962. Both
works build up (as in the
19th century symphony) to
the Finale, thus making
it the most substantial
movement, which provides
a climax to the work. The
First Movement has, in
both works, only the
status of an
Introduction. But there
the consciously willed
resemblances end. This
Introduction follows the
Second Quartet to a
certain extent, in that
it provides a sort of
'cauldron', from which
elements to be used later
can all be plucked. Its
opening will reappear at
various points throughout
the work, most completely
at a climatic point of
the Finale (bar 110).
Subsequent material will
be more fully worked out
in the second movement, a
large Scherzo. The
Introduction concludes
with an unusually placed
violin cadenza (itself a
rare feature in a string
quartet, the idea lifted
from Elliott Carter's
First Quartet) of which
the opening is to
reappear halfway through
the Finale. The Scherzo
(which follows attacca)
does not have at its
centre a discretely
characterized Trio: a
figure in double-stops
like a distant fanfare
supplies the necessary
contrast of a second
idea. The Slow Movement
has a secondary idea
first heard on the cello
and marked appassionato:
an agitato middle section
recalls the opening of
the work, but in a
formulation which will be
found closely to
anticipate its
reappearance in the
Finale. The Finale is
planned on a broad scale.
Only after a fully worked
exposition of both
primary and secondary
material does the opening
of the whole work return,
now in a greatly extended
form. Then, at bar 140,
the tune of the violin
cadenza is first
harmonized in fanfare
style on the upper
instruments, then
presented as a chorale on
the lower ones, with a
rushing semiquaver
accompaniment above. This
climatic activity mounts
to the very end. The work
is dedicated to the
Chilingirian Quartet, old
friends over many years.
