Music) In the wind band
profession—as in
every great
discipline—it is
critical to take stock in
the big questions about
where we are heading, and
why, as we move through
the twenty-first century.
This thought-provoking
book contains seven
high-level exchanges
between a leading wind
band practitioner and a
music education
philosopher. Each section
of The Future of the Wind
Band grapples with the
most profound issues
facing the music
education profession and
the path of instrumental
music education in our
schools: Relevance: What
relevance, if any, does
the wind band have both
to today’s
students and to culture
more broadly in the
twenty-first century?
What relevance does the
band experience hold for
students’ everyday
life? Repertoire: What is
the relationship between
the repertoire performed
by wind ensembles and the
larger musical world?
Pedagogy: What
constitutes best practice
in terms of musical
pedagogy and rehearsal
technique within the
large-ensemble
experience? Creativity:
Can the wind band
function as a vehicle for
enhancing the individual
creativity of its
members? Economic
Justice: How do issues of
social class and the
distribution of wealth
relate to broader
questions of social
justice within the
context of instrumental
music education?
Professional Ethics: What
are the primary ethical
responsibilities of the
wind band conductor?
Democratic Citizenship:
What relationship, if
any, can be drawn between
membership in the wind
band and citizen
participation in
democracy? Such exchanges
can only strengthen our
profession and pay rich
dividends in our musical
and educational work with
the students we serve.

Keyboard
World is a beginner
method for keyboard that
is especially suitable
for older children or
teenagers who are
learning the keyboard and
can be used with or
without a teacher, for
individual lessons or for
group lessons. The
different ways of using
the keyboard are
introduced: playing with
or without the automatic
accompaniment, reading
notes and chord symbols,
but also playing by ear,
as well as composing and
improvising. Each lesson
begins with an overview
of the new material which
will follow. After a
rhythm or aural exercise,
a piece without automatic
accompaniment follows (in
other words, you are
playing in the style of a
piano) for which you will
need to read notes
forboth hands. These
pieces can be played
along with the enclosed
CD. On the right-hand
page, you will find
pieces for playing with
an automatic
accompaniment - here you
will need to read notes
for the right hand, and
read chord symbols for
the left hand.At the end
of each lesson,
there’s an
assignment: e.g. note
riddles, theory
questions, composition
tasks or musical games.
The first six lessons
differ slightly from this
pattern, because at the
beginning a bit more time
is needed to explain the
details.

Something
Borrowed, Something Blue
is a broad survey of the
wider principles of
harmony, form,
adaptation, and
developmental technique
underlying jazz
composition in its
various instrumental
formats. This book
examines compositions
ranging from those for
solo piano to large
ensemble, from common
forms such as blues and
32-bar song forms to
extended through-composed
pieces, to those based on
adaptations of European
classical forms such as
fugue and rondo. Such
topics as individuality
of voice, cultural and
historical influences,
the contrafact, formal
appropriation,
pantonality,
reharmonization, and the
use of counterpoint are
among those covered.
Composers represented
include a wide range of
stylists, similar to
Scott Joplin, Duke
Ellington, Thelonious
Monk, Charles Mingus,
John Coltrane, Gil Evans,
Mary Lou Williams, Herbie
Hancock, Oliver Nelson,
Hermeto Pascoal, and John
Lewis, among many others.
The extensive
bibliography,
discography, and end of
chapter assignments are
designed to provide
students and faculty at
either the undergraduate
or graduate level with a
flexible framework for
analysis of additional
compositions of their
choice, as well as a
basic set of useful
research references and
suggested compositional
projects. Some questions
the book poses are: What
formal elements and
musical characteristics
are common to the diverse
stylistic range of jazz
composition? Which of
these elements exist in
any form of musical
composition or artistic
expression, and which are
unique to composition in
the jazz tradition? How
do composers apply these
techniques in a way that
enables them to create an
individual voice within
the context of the jazz
tradition?

The CD-ROM
of RISM series A/I:
Individual Prints before
1800 makes available the
world's largest source
collection of printed
musical works for the
first time in electronic
form. The CD-ROM offers
scholars, musicians,
librarians and music
antiquarians - in short,
all people and
institutions that work
with musicalsources -
significant assistance
for researching
historical musical
prints. For the
CD-ROM, the contents of
the nine main volumes
have been converted into
a database and expanded
with new entries from the
supplementary volumes.
Composer names, library
sigla and catalogues of
works have been matched
with the standard
versions used in series
A/II: Music Manuscripts
after 1600, brought
up-to-date and linked
with the corresponding
authority files. The
contents of these
authority files, with
many cross-references,
precise citations and
library adresses, often
with a link to their
website, are now
available to users. In
addition, keywords
relating to genre and,
where possible,
instrumentation, have
been included. In total,
the database contains
over 100,000
entries.
The
advantage of the CD-ROM
lies in its ability to
