Rameau's only surviving opera based on a libretto by Voltaire has survived in two versions (1745 and 1746), whereby the 1745 version was long considered lost. Volume IV.12 of the series ?Opera omnia Rameau? presents a complete edition which enables performances of both versions. Voltaire refers to Metastasio in his libretto in that he wishes to liberate the opera from the gallant milieu and to make it a moralizing stage work that is equally edifying and political. After a prologue dedicated to envy personified, the tyrants Bélus and Bacchus are chased out of the Hall of Fame and finally Trajan is crowned with laurels for defeating the rebels, forgiving them and ultimately turning the Hall of Fame into a public temple. Norge i rødt, hvitt og blått ('Norway in Red, White and Blue') was commissioned by the Oslo Fagott Choir (yes, that is indeed a gay men?s choir) for a concert with The Staff Band of the Armed Forces in 2015. I was given artistic licence to write a more modern and somewhat ?eclectic? arrangement for this originally Swedish melody written by Lars-Erik Larsson, which became something of a national liberation anthem when Nazi occupation ended in May 1945 ? then with new lyrics by Finn Bø, Bias Bernhoft and Arild Feldborg. After the premiere in Oslo, and a music video with Oslo Fagott Choir and The Staff Band, broadcasted by Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) on Constitution Day during coronavirus lockdown in 2020, I was approached by many to write an instrumental version of the arrangement for concert band. C'est à la suite de la lecture de ce bref témoignage reproduit ci-dessous, que m'est venu l'idée d'écrire Mémoires. Ce souvenir presque intime reflète une toute autre réalité que celle que l'on trouve dans les manuels d'histoire. C'est la différence entre une expérience individuelle et une expérience collective qui est à la base de la pièce. Pour essayer exprimer cette différence, j'ai choisi de juxtaposer à ce témoignage certains extraits de très beau Liber ecclesiastes. Ce texte prévoit et explique tout. Ce détachement, cet intemporalité contraste avec ce destin où un moment changea et marqua une vie.
