When
guitarist John Olson and
soprano Gioia De Cari
commissioned me to write
a piece for them, I envi-
sioned writing something
theatrical that might
especially suit Gioia,
who is both a singer and
an actress. Eventually, I
thought of Mark Twain.
The great American writer
and humorist of substance
wrote a short,
little-known book called
The Diary of Adam and
Eve, which is, of course,
about the first days of
human life on this earth,
in Twainâs witty,
but touching take on the
Bible story. Adam and Eve
each write diary entries.
I chose several passages
from Eveâs diary
that convey the sense of
constant wonder that she
felt because absolutely
everything in her world
was new.
Setting
prose, rather than
poetry, is a challenge
for a composer because it
has neither the innate
rhythm nor the lyricism
of poetry. On some
intuitive level, this
challenge led me to a
process that allowed the
music to evolve mostly
from the guitar part.
Whereas normally the
vocal melody might emerge
first, motivated by the
text and with the
accompaniment then added
for support, here the
guitar part was the prime
mover. An example of this
is the last song, which
is a passacaglia played
by the guitar, providing
the ground over which the
vocal line can soar.
Eveâs Diary was
composed in
2015.

OF THE BRAVE CHICKEN
celebrates the life and
work of a graphic artist
and illustrator (who
played clarinet), who
lost her battle with
cancer as a young adult.
The six-minute duo begins
as a dramatic dialog for
bass clarinet and
piccolo, gradually
evolving to peaceful
resolution for flute and
clarinet. The work may be
performed with
projections of the
original art panels that
inspired the
work. Brave Chicken
was a character developed
by Nina Frenkel, gifted
illustrator,
graphicartist, and
beloved friend to many,
who passed away at the
age of 43 having lost
adifficult battle with
cancer. Her parents,
Marcel and Anne Frenkel,
approached mein May 2017
about composing a short
work in Nina’s
memory, suggesting that
it bebased on four
delightful panels that
Nina had painted in 2014
before she knew of
therecurrence of the
disease.Titled
“Brave Chicken
Meets the Ogre,â€
“Brave Chicken
Fights the Ogre,â€
“BraveChicken Flees
to Safety,†and
“Brave Chicken in
the Healing Hut,â€
the four panelsdepict a
progression from darkness
to light. And while my
composition does
notattempt to follow the
four panels literally, I
did aim to create two
distinctly
differentmusical
characters who are posed
against one another with
one clearly perceived
asdominant and
threatening, and trace
the evolving change in
the balance of power,and
with it the journey from
darkness to
light.Inspired by the
knowledge that Nina
herself greatly enjoyed
playing the clarinet,
Idecided to pair bass
clarinet with piccolo,
eventually switching the
piccolo over toflute,
with clarinet appearing
in time for the
work’s peaceful
conclusion. Though I
hadnever met Nina, I felt
honored to compose this
work in her memory.

The
composer Johanna Senfter
(1879 1961) from
Oppenheim concerned
herself with chamber
music for strings all her
life, even studied violin
in Frankfurt herself. Max
Reger then gave her
lessons in Leipzig, first
privately, then in his
composition class at the
conservatoire and valued
her 'extraordinary
compositional talent'.
The strict teacher more
and more became a
committed promoter of the
works by Johanna Senfter.
For a period of 50 years,
the composer concerned
herself with the string
quartet genre, from
Quartet No. 1 in D minor
Op. 4, composed shortly
after the turn of the
century, to the sixth and
last Quartet in C minor
Op. 115 which was
performed for the first
time in 1960, one year
before her death. The
Quartet in F sharp minor
Op. 28 is her second
quartet which was
premiered in Darmstadt on
5 November 1922. In this
work, as in later works,
Senfter combined
traditional form models -
here Baroque movements
like gavotte, saraband,
gigue - with expressive,
late Romantic musical
language. The work,
consisting of six short
movements, may without
doubt be regarded as a
valuable addition to the
quartet repertoire.

Fairy-Tale Narratives
(Märchenerzählungen
) for B-flat Clarinet (ad
libitum Violin), Viola
and Piano, Op. 132,
belong to the few
Schumann works that were
composed, revised and
published in a short
time: composed in
Düsseldorf, at
beginning of October
1853, the new composition
was already offered for
publication to the
Breitkopf & Härtel
publishing house on 3
November and printed in
February1854. Composition
and publication of the
Märchenerzählungen
were accompanied, though,
by difficult times, the
final days before the
composer was admitted to
the psychiatric clinic in
Endenich. The work's
reception lies in the
shadow of the last
creative period: The
pieces were associated
with his life's darker
phases and were very
little played. The
Märchenerzählungen
transmit Schumann's
single work for this
unusual piano trio with
viola and clarinet. The
only well-known earlier
example in this setting
at that time is Mozart's
“Kegelstattâ€
Trio K 498 (composed in
1786). Schumann was
certainly already
acquainted with the work
from his Leipzig years -
it was played in one of
the “quartet
sessions†in 1829.

Memory of the World
Register. Beethoven was
preoccupied with his
unique work for many
years, since at least
1815, and still shortly
before his death,
according to the highly
complex source situation.
The work will now finally
be available as an
edition produced from the
new Beethoven Complete
Edition in time for the
2020 anniversary year
commemorating the
composer's 250th
birthday. Not all
doubtful cases can be
clarified, not all gaps
closed, but numerous
aspects have been further

The
general inspiration for
the music was an idea of
Durham, garnered from two
or three short visits and
a reading of a short
history - so a sort of
Durham of the mind, a
stylized Durham; 'my'
Durham, if you will,
imagined into music.
However, the
defininginspiration for
the piece was the
Cathedral. My first visit
to Durham in 2001 saw me
standing open-mouthed on
Palace Green, and then in
silent awe as I walked
into that formidable
magnificence inside. Most
of the themes came from
the days immediately
following my first
experience of this
extraordinary, inspiring
building. The feeling
that the very stones and
pillars themselves are
imbued with centuries of
prayer, withpeople's joy,
grief, despair, even
anger; gratitude and
hope. As the tunes and
chords and sounds started
to organize themselves in
my mind and onto
manuscript paper, I
realized that I was
writing a sort of day in
the life of Durham, and
that the Cathedral
wouldbe its beginning,
would be in its middle,
and would be at its
ending. The piece
consists of six
'pictures' arranged into
three parts - the
morning, afternoon and
evening of this imaginary
