in November 1999, Werner
Breig's fundamentally new
scholarly concept begins
to make itself felt more
strongly. All editorial
differences aside: with
respect to their
contents, Volumes 9-11
can be neatly categorized
as the Tristan letters

each act of Tristan und
Isolde can be assigned to
one specific
chronological section.
Wagner was working on the
first act (beginnung his
correspondance with
Mathilde Wesendonck at
the same time) in Zurich
during the period of the

In this edition, the work
is named after the place

unusual instrumentation
consisting of flute, oboe
(one of each), one
bassoon, one trumpet, two
violins, basso continuo,
and choir (one soprano,
three tenors, and one
bass) might have been a
result of the number of
musicians available for
performance.
Incidentally, the
masqueAcis und Galatea,
composed around the same
time, is also scored for
three tenors. The work
bears some resemblance to
theUtrecht Te Deum,
however, the intimate
scoring results in a
chamber music
feel.
This
academic-critical edition
reflects the most current
research in musical,
philological, and
historical respects. As

Mendelssohn Bartholdy
composed his Reformation
Symphony for the
celebrations marking the
300th anniversary of the
Confessio Augustana, the
Protestant declaration of
faith. Owing to various
and only partially
explained reasons, there
was no performance in
1830, the year in
question; it was only two
years later that the
composer conducted the
premiere of his work, now
heavily revised, in
Berlin. There was only
one more performance in
Mendelssohn's lifetime,
this one conducted by
Julius Rietz in
Dusseldorf; the composer
had since distanced
himself from his
opus.Conceived for the
concert hall, the
symphony formulates its
theological references
through the integration
of various motives. This
occurs in the finale, for
example, in which
Mendelssohn quotes the
Luther chorale Ein feste
Burg in the flute, from
where it builds up to a
triumphant principal
theme. The strong
extra-musical aspect must
have been one of the
reasons for the
composer's later
avoidance of this score,
especially since
Mendelssohn was becoming
increasingly skeptical
about explicitly
programmatic music in the
instrumental domain. Next
to the Dusseldorf
performance material of
1837, two scribal copies
have been examined for
the first time; they
transmit the main stages
of the version of
1830.

Divertimento II, for two
violins were composed in
1996. These two sister
compositions have the
additional attraction of
being unedited works
which are representative
of the composer's most
recent style. This
etymological description,
which defines a
personality rather than
an established musical
style, takes the form of
a succession of
contrasting dynamic
movements. One of the
most outstanding features
is the way in which the
two instruments break
away from their usual
range of sounds to create
the ideal conditions for
suggesting their latent
extent of sound
possibilities in
compositions that could
be extended perfectly
well into a string
quartet. The interplay
between the two
instruments opens up a
whole range of
possibilities: short
motives in an imitative
style often braking out
into a repetition of
brief themes with a lot
of personality, sequences
of transformations,
repetitive rhythms, etc.
All theses show the
virtuosity of the players
on their own and together
and because of their
characteristics, they are
written in a very clear
tonal language, a times,
modal, oriental, or even

Mendelssohn Bartholdy
composed his Reformation
Symphony for the
celebrations marking the
300th anniversary of the
Confessio Augustana, the
Protestant declaration of
faith. Owing to various
and only partially
explained reasons, there
was no performance in
1830, the year in
question; it was only two
years later that the
composer conducted the
premiere of his work, now
heavily revised, in
Berlin. There was only
one more performance in
Mendelssohn's lifetime,
this one conducted by
Julius Rietz in
Dusseldorf; the composer
had since distanced
himself from his
opus.Conceived for the
concert hall, the
symphony formulates its
theological references
through the integration
of various motives. This
occurs in the finale, for
example, in which
Mendelssohn quotes the
Luther chorale Ein feste
Burg in the flute, from
where it builds up to a
triumphant principal
theme. The strong
extra-musical aspect must
have been one of the
reasons for the
composer's later
avoidance of this score,
especially since
Mendelssohn was becoming
increasingly skeptical
about explicitly
programmatic music in the
instrumental domain. Next
to the Dusseldorf
performance material of
1837, two scribal copies
have been examined for
the first time; they
transmit the main stages
of the version of
1830.

This book
is the first pictorial
monograph about the
Korean-German composer
Isang Yun, who was born
in southern Korea in 1917
and died in Berlin in
1995. It was first in
Germany, with influence
from what around 1960 was
then the avant-garde that
he developed an
individual musical
language of his own. A
little later Yun was
drawn into the field of
tension between political
advocacy motivated by
humanitarian, societal
concerns and responding
to ideological
incitement, between
imprisonment, torture,
and reparation. It was in
his compositional work
that he found a place of
refuge. His music
proceeds from the primacy
of melody and the
sustained tone, which he
found preformed in the
traditional music of his
native Korea and then
succeeded in developing
heterophonically and
spatially. The resultant
works were characterized
by unusual intensity and
rich tone colors.
