Songs of Dances and Death
arranged for bass voice
and orchestra by Kalevi
Aho. This orchestral
adaptation of
Mussorgsky's brilliant
song cycle was made in
1984 for the late Martti
Talvela. The songs
represent variations on
the same storyline: Death
arrives to take a life
before its normal course
has run. In all four Aho
uses the instrumentation
to highlight the movement
towards Death's triumph
and emphasise the cycle's
dark psychological
character.

This method
is aimed at everybody who
wants to learn to play
the keyboard, in lessons
or self-study, in
methodological teaching
units with the help of
popular songs and useful
information: at beginners
of every age, but also at
wind players, singers or
guitarists who wish to
become musical 'insiders'
and look for a method to
approach improvisation,
composition, harmony,
etc. through keyboard
playing. It is especially
on the keyboard with its
clear, regular layout
that scales, chords and
harmonic progressions can
be shown in a clearer and
more systematic way than
on any other instrument.
Musicians with previous
knowledge can start with
volume 2 or 3. Volume 3:
Seven new chords which
can easily and certainly
be learnt due to the
previous slow increase in
difficulty and the
increased use of the left
hand for independent
accompaniments help to
prepare for polyphonic
playing with both hands.
Playing with two hands
and with a number of new
rhythmic structures which
have all been taken from
well-known melodies make
music-making and learning
in this volume a great
experience. The knowledge
of intervals, exercises
for the quick recognition
of the intervals, and
transposing form the
basis of the introduction
to harmony provided for
in volume 4.

Peter
Maxwell Davies' 1979 work
for mezzo-soprano,
baritone and orchestra,
commissioned by the
Philharmonia Orchestra,
who gave the first
performance in May 1992
at the Royal Festival
Hall, with Simon Rattle
conducting. The 'Black
Pentecost' is the coming
of uranium mining, which
was a threat to Orkney
when the work was
written. The text tells
of the destruction of old
ways of life, the eclipse
of the human by the
technological. Davies
sets it as a gripping
dramatic cantata which is
also a four-movement
symphony, with the songs
for imperious baritone
and lyrical mezzo-soprano
linked by orchestral
transitions. The work is
a lament, and at the same
time a fiercely argued
protest. Score. Duration

are counter-melodies to
each other, allowing for
both languages to be sung
simultaneously. Some
refrains were further

replaced with new

The work of
Paul Hindemith is
encyclopedic in nature.
From the outset, he
worked in all musical
genres and devised
several of his musical
ideas and projects not as
individual,
self-contained works but
as work cycles with
different functional
relationships. These
contrasting pieces
complement each other if
experienced as part of
the overall structure.
Hindemith himself not
only wanted a complete
edition of his collected
works but had begun
planning it; at his death
he left a detailed list
of Unpublished pieces for
an eventual complete
edition. The Complete
Works contain all
finished works in all
extant versions, newly
engraved for the edition.
Sketches and fragments
are published in
appendices of the
relevant volume, and are
evaluated in the
Introduction and Critical
Commentary by the
respective volume editor.
Each volume contains a
preface by the editorial
directors and an
introduction by the
volume editor,
delineating the genesis
and performance history
of the work, with
authentic performance
instructions, an
evaluation of extant
recordings by Paul
Hindemith himself and a
Critical Commentary. The
Complete Works of Paul
Hindemith are thus
presented in a critical,
scholarly edition which
is equally appropriate
for study and
performance. Hindemith
researchers will welcome
the numerous first
publications of works by
the composer, and
practical musicians will
appreciate the newly
prepared, philologically
ordered performance
material.

The
last decades we humans
have witnessed a
significant number of
disturbing developments.
If we look at the direct
and persistent
destructive influence of
humans on nature: air and
water quality are
reducing, soils are
depleting, crops are
short of pollinators,
coasts are less protected
from storms,
deforestation, the
degradation of land, loss
of biodiversity and
pollution. In stark
contrast we find the
intelligence and
boundless creativity of
humans: what about all
the high technological
advancements? What lies
ahead in the realm of
Artificial Intelligence?
Will we let machines make
human decisions? What
ethical issues arise
there? This composition
reflects the desperation
and urgency of the human
need for action. The
music draws inspiration
from the brutal natural
forces that ravage our
world as a direct
consequence of human
failure and selfishness.
Are we heading towards a
'Judgment Day'? Or will
humanity find a way to
reverse negative trends
towards a more livable,
peaceful, and joyful
environment for humans,
animals, and nature? To
underscore this message,
composer Peter Knockaert
opted for a highly
classical idiom that has
been used by many
composers in classical
music: the 'Dies Irae'.
Traditionally, the Dies
Irae is the third part of

The work of
Paul Hindemith is
encyclopedic in nature.
From the outset, he
worked in all musical
genres and devised
several of his musical
ideas and projects not as
individual,
self-contained works but
as work cycles with
different functional
relationships. These
contrasting pieces
complement each other if
experienced as part of
the overall structure.
Hindemith himself not
only wanted a complete
edition of his collected
works but had begun
planning it; at his death
he left a detailed list
of ‚Unpublished
pieces for an eventual
complete
edition‘.The
Complete Works contain
all finished works in all
extant versions, newly
engraved for the edition.
Sketches and fragments
are published in
appendices of the
relevant volume, and are
evaluated in the
Introduction and Critical
Commentary by the
respective volume
editor.Each volume
contains a preface by the
editorial directors and
an introduction by the
volume editor,
delineating the genesis
and performance history
of the work, with
authentic performance
instructions, an
evaluation of extant
recordings by Paul
Hindemith himself and a
Critical Commentary.The
Complete Works of Paul
Hindemith are thus
presented in a critical,
scholarly edition which
is equally appropriate
for study and
performance. Hindemith
researchers will welcome
the numerous first
publications of works by
the composer, and
practical musicians will
appreciate the newly
prepared, philologically
ordered performance
material.

This
brand-new series is
intended as a guide to
the keyboard music of the
16th to 19th centuries
for pupils of the piano
and the harpsichord, as
well as of other early
keyboard instruments.
Each volume contains
pieces by well-known and
lesser-known composers
from one country or
region. The main purpose
of the series is to
extend the repertoire and
stylistic knowledge of
both pianists and
harpsichordists while
also presenting fine
pieces and typical genres
based on original
sources. Our edition
retains the performance
indications of the
composers' manuscripts
and contemporary
editions. Each volume
includes:- suggestions
for stylistically
appropriate performance
bothon the piano and on
period instruments-
suggested elaborated
versions of some pieces
and excerpts- a fold-out
list of ornamentation
signs and the composers'
own tables of
ornamentation signs-
biographies of the
composers and the sources
of the pieces-
translations of
foreign-language
performance indications.
The two volumes devoted
to French keyboard music
includes close to 50
showy and relatively easy
works - preludes, dances,
suites, rondeaux, and
character pieces - from
the early 16th until the
late 18th century
(ordered
chronologically).This
publication is printed on
high-quality,
age-resistant paper that
is produced in an
environmentally-friendly,
climate-neutral manner
using renewable raw
materials.
Una nuova collana
ideata per offrire una
guida alla scoperta della
musica per pianoforte e
clavicembalo dal
sedicesimo al
diciannovesimo secolo.
Ogni volume include brani
di compositori di una
specifica nazione o area
geografica. L'intento
è amplicare la
conoscenza e il
repertorio di ogni
musicista. Inoltre in
ogni edizione sono
riportati fedelmente i
suggerimenti per
l'interpretazione e le
indicazioni presenti sui
manoscritti originali. I
due volumi dedicati alla
musica francese includono
circa 50 brani
significativi - preludi,
danze, suites, rondò e
altri - che risalgono
all'inizio del sedicesimo
secolo fino alla fine del
diciottesimo secolo,
rigorosamente inordine
cronologico.

The Richard
Wagner Complete Edition
presents the composer's
entire output for the
first time in a reliable
form. The conductor
Michael Balling, in the
early years of the 20th
century, attempted to
make Wagner's work more
accessible for research
and performance, but the
edition only reached 10
volumes - some with grave
shortcomings - and was
discontinued after
Balling's death in 1925.
A further attempt at a
complete edition by Otto
Strobel was abandoned at
the preliminary
stages.This third attempt
at a complete edition
will be the first
scholarly, critical
edition, based on an
evaluation of all the
accessible source
materials and the latest
findings of serious
Wagner research. As the
edition is also intended
for practical
performance, the musical
text has been kept free
of philological
insertions; these are
listed in the appendices
of each volume in the
Critical Commentary.
Numerous, partly
unpublished works - some
relatively unknown - and
variant versions are
published here for the
first time. The edition
presents authentic texts
for Wagner specialists
and researchers and
critically based
performing materials.
Contrary to widely held
opinions, even the
well-known works of
Wagner are not
necessarily available in
reliable editions. The
genesis, history and
performances directed by
Wagner himself are
extensively documented so
as to present as complete
an image as possible of
Wagner's compositional
intentions.
