The Concerto

Op.50 was commissioned by
Jan Gippo, principal
Piccolo of the St. Louis

premiere of the work on
August 18th, 1996, in New

Jersey Symphony Orchestra
conducted by Glenn
Cortese. The occasion was
the annual convention of

commission.Jan Gippo had
enthusiastically pursued
the idea of commissioning
a Piccolo concerto from
me ever since he played
orchestral Piccolo in the
premiere of my Concerto
for Flute with James
Galway and the St. Louis
Symphony. Won over by his
enthusiasm, I agreed to
write this work for an
instrument which has had
virtually no concerto
repertoire since the
baroque era. In doing so
I was eager to stress the
lyrical and expressive
qualities of an
instrument which is too
often stereotyped as
being useful for only
brilliant and ornamental
flourishes.The work falls
into three movements
which are united by
thematic and motivic
materials, significant
among which is a twelve
note row which forms the
basis of the second
movement’s variations.
The final movement, which
puts the seriousness of
the first tow movements
aside for an unbridled
romp, makes use of three
explicit musical
quotations at strategic
structural moments, one
of which is an implicit
homage to Shostakovich,
who quoted from the same
work in his own second
Violin
Concerto.Orchestration of
the Concerto was
completed at the Loew’s
Hotel in Monte Carlo,
where I was situated for
the rehearsal period of
my opera The Picture of
Dorian Gray.The Concerto
for Piccolo and Orchestra

release on the BMG label
by James Galway with the

To all
extents and purposes,
Germany is the land of
artists, wrote Felix
Mendelssohn Bartholdy in
1831 while on his travels
in Italy; but Italy, he
added, is the land of
art. Indeed, everywhere
he went in Italy, the
22-year-old composer
found impulses for his
symphony: I have to save
the work until I have
seen Naples. But although
the country fired his
inspiration: It will be
the merriest piece that I
have ever written, he did
not actually write the
Italian Symphony there.
This did not occur until
early 1833, when
Mendelssohn obtained a
commission from London,
where he then conducted
the first performance in
May 1833. Begun the
following year, his
revision of the piece
remained fragmentary, and
the composer no longer
performed the work
himself. The familiar
London version thus
represents the only
closed form of the work
which the composer
presented to the public.
This is the version of
the Italian Symphony that
is now appearing in the
Breitkopf Urtext
collection based on the
Complete Edition.

The genesis
of Beethoven's 4th
symphony came at an
extraordinary time for
the composer not only
regarding productivity:
Thus, in 1806 he
composed, among other
things, the 4th piano
concerto, the three
Rasumovsky string
quartets op. 59, the 32
piano variations in c
minor WoO 80, as well as
the violin concerto op.
61. The first performance
of the B-flat-major
symphony occurred in
March 1807 at one of the
two noteworthy
subscription concerts
conducted by Beethoven in
the Palais Lobkowitz in
Vienna. In the course of
time, this
intellectually-stimulatin
g work- so described by
one of the reviewers of
the Allgemeine
musikalische Zeitung -
found ever-increasing
appeal. Throughout the
entire 19th century this
symphony ranked with the
best-loved and most
frequently performed
works; its popularity
spread to England where
the London Philharmonic
Society played it at
least 25 times in the
period between 1813 and
1850.Extant are only a
few drafts of the 4th
symphony. The autograph
served as the main source
for the present edition
edited by Prof. Bathia
Churgin, likewise editor
of the 3rd symphony in
the new Beethoven
Complete Edition.
Consulted as reference
sources were copies of
the score and orchestral
parts as well as the
original edition of the
parts.

Haydn
arrived in London at the
beginning of February
1794 for his second stay
in England. Two movements
of the Symphony in G
major Hob. I:100 had
already been completed by
then, and the finished
work was premiered on 31
March. The trumpet
fanfare in the second
movement and the use of
“janissary”
percussion gave the
symphony its nickname
“Military Symphony,”
which Haydn himself even
used. Its success in
London was enormous; in
1794/95 alone, the work
was performed nine times
and thus quickly became
one of the most popular
Haydn symphonies of all
time. To everyone wishing
to become more acquainted
with this symphony, let
this inexpensive study
edition be commended -
with reliable
commentaries on its
genesis, sources, and
edition as well as an
unassailable musical text
taken from the Haydn
Complete Edition.
