inspired by the ancient

poem Drinking Alone under

The premiere was given on
April 26, 2014 by the
PRISM Quartet with the
Nai-Ni Chen Dance
Company, which
commissioned the work to
celebrate its 25th
Anniversary NYC Season.
From the Program Note by
Matthew Levy (The PRISM

interdisciplinary
work...but it stands
alone in a chamber music
setting. The work spans a
stunning range of
textures, from
introspective solos for
each of the four
saxophones to majestic
hyper-active gestures.
The PRISM Quartet
recorded Not Alone for a
2017 release on XAS
Records titled Paradigm
Lost. But we're excited
for a wider community of
saxophonists to embrace
the work, and share it
with their own audiences.
Not Alone is published
together with Happy
Birthday to PRISM, a
brief miniature that Chen
Yi wrote for the
quartet's 20th
anniversary celebration
in 2004. For advanced
performers.______________

by composer Chen YiThe
original inspiration for
this work for both the
choreographer and the
composer came from the
Tang Dynasty poem - Alone
Under the Moon by Li Bai.
The poem describes the
poet being alone in a
garden. The moon and his
shadow became his
companions that night.
The choreographer brings
this idea to modern life
in an urban setting. She
created a series of
“mindscapesâ€
which are the result of
the exploration of the
different mental and
physical states of being
alone.Through
self-examination, the
choreographer raises the
question: are we ever
really alone? Our
physical being may be
standing by itself, but
what about our
introspective self? When
we are still, we let our
thoughts pass by like
flowing water. If we
could engage with our
shadows, what would it be
like?Program Note by
Matthew Levy, The PRISM
QuartetThe PRISM Quartet
has commissioned a great
many composers since our
founding days in 1984.
Chen Yi is among ahandful
of our very favorites,
and one to whom
we’ve returned
time and time again. Her
music is powerful,
expansive,intimate, and
draws connections between
Eastern and Western,
ancient and modern
traditions in a voice all
her own.Chen Yi has
written or adapted four
works for the PRISM
Quartet. She penned a
wonderful miniature
called HappyBirth day to
PRISM to celebrate the
ensemble’s 20th
anniversary back in 2004
(Dedication, Innova
Recordings).We
subsequently commissioned
her to compose Septet
(2008) for Erhu, Pipa,
Percussion, and Saxophone
Quartet(2008), premiered
and recorded with the New
York ensemble Music From
China (Antiphony, Innova
Recordings 2010).In 2015,
the PRISM Quartet
performed and recorded
(XAS Records) a new
version of her saxophone
quartet concerto,BA YIN,
with the University of
Missouri-Kansas City Wind
Ensemble under the baton
of Steven Davis
(originally writtenfor
the Rascher Quartet and
scored for saxophones and
string
orchestra.).Finally, Not

Lost. But we’re
excited for a wider
community of saxophonists
toembrace the work, and

notes for the recording,
WNYC’s John
Schaefer writes:
“As with much of
her music, Chen employs
percussiveeffects and
glissandi; in Chinese
music these are not
considered
“extended
techniques†or
special effects, but
animportant part of the
performer’s
arsenal. Here, they help
create the twilit mood of
the opening moments. The
piecesoon becomes more
dramatic, suggesting the
arrival of the
drinker’s
companions (real or
imagined) and his or
herincreasingly garrulous
outbursts. Passages of
consonance and discord
can easily be heard as
companionable singingand
bouts of drunken
argument. The piece
bustles along on a kind
of restless energy,
until, finally, that
restlessnesssubsides,
giving way to a gently
humorous ending where a
short falling phrase
signals the drinker
falling
asleep.â€. $39.99 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 1 to 2 weeks

inches. The songs
of Mieczyslaw Karlowicz
appeared in the history
of Polish song as a
rather unusual
phenomenon. In the output
of this outstanding
symphonist - as youthful
works - they formed an
anacrusis, albeit a
significant one, to his
fully mature and
masterful output. Nearly
all of them were written
over the course of a
single year. Composed on
the margins of his
academic course in
composition, they appear
to represent a document
of deeply personal
feelings and thoughts,
seismographically
recording his current
states of mind. Of the
twenty-nine songs known
to have existed,
twenty-two have come down
to us; the seven
unpublished works, some
merely sketched, were
lost during the Second
World War. Overlooking a
couple of them, of a
separate character, they
form a remarkably
coherent body of work. On
closer inspection, it
turns out that this
cohesion of a distinctive
character marks the whole
of Karlowicz's oeuvre.
Thesymphonic poems of the
composer of Eternal songs
are set within the same
space of ideas and
meanings as the songs;
they are marked by
analogous categories of
expression. And it is a
space which the composers
main biographer, Adolf
Chybinski, described as
teeming with tragedy and
boundless woe,
resignation and a longing
for another world'. In
terms of the style of
utterance, Mieczyslaw
Karlowiczs songs -
although deeply rooted in
late Romantic style -
have often been described
as output standing on the
threshold of a modernist
phase. Zdzislaw
Jachimecki wrote in
1930:A warm lyrical note
in many of them, a
genuine inspiration
manifested in the very
natural way inwhich the
melodies are drawn,
unsophisticated forms of
accompaniment, which are
nevertheless suited to
the mood of the poetry in
question and organically
linked to the song, and
the accomplished
declamation and
construction of these
works have earned
Karlowicz's songs
deserved popularity in
Polish singing
circles. $68.00 - Voir plus => Acheter

major. Annie's Gone
Home, composed in the
style of a spiritual, was
written as a tribute to
composer Bud Woodruff's
mother. The tune is built
on phrases of easily
understandable material,
but the poignant nature
of the piece is marked
with profundity. From the
subtle bass solo to the
emotional high points,
the piece is inspired by
this strong woman in the
life of the
composer.
Annies Gone
Home is a tribute to
my Mother, Annette Fenner
Hains (19232017). Her
siblings and cousins
always called her Annie.
She loved music, and her
influence was the primary
inspiration for me to go
into music. Her tastes
were wildly diverse,
loving everything from
symphonic music to
Country/Western, to
various styles of folk
music, to pop, to
marches, but she had a
very tender spot for
hymns and spirituals.
While it is
easy to interpret grief
in this music, and its
presence is undeniable,
it is really intended
more as a song of the
ultimate triumph of
goodness. In her wisdom,
she was able to capture
deep thoughts within
simple phrases, which I
have also tried to
capture. Her life was one
of frequent struggles,
yet she was inspiring to
many. She emerged from
every difficulty, never
unscathed, but always
victorious, with clear
eyes and head held high,
until her last battle,
which brought about her
greatest victory. This
sentiment is what I tried
to capture. If too slow a
tempo is taken, that
feeling is lost and a
sense of grief takes
over. That may be what a
conductor wants to
convey, but is not what I
intended. . Annieas Gone

my Mother, Annette Fenner
Hains (1923-2017). Her
siblings and cousins
always called her Annie.
She loved music, and her
influence was the primary
inspiration for me to go
into music. Her tastes
were wildly diverse,
loving everything from
symphonic music to
Country/Western, to
various styles of folk
music, to pop, to
marches, but she had a
very tender spot for
hymns and spirituals.
While it is
easy to interpret grief
in this music, and its
presence is undeniable,
it is really intended
more as a song of the
ultimate triumph of
goodness. In her wisdom,
she was able to capture
deep thoughts within
simple phrases, which I
have also tried to
capture. Her life was one
of frequent struggles,
yet she was inspiring to
many. She emerged from
every difficulty, never
unscathed, but always
victorious, with clear
eyes and head held high,
until her last battle,
which brought about her
greatest victory. This
sentiment is what I tried
to capture. If too slow a
tempo is taken, that
feeling is lost and a
sense of grief takes
over. That may be what a
conductor wants to
convey, but is not what I
intended. . Annie's

Gone Home, composed in
the style of a spiritual,
was written as a tribute
to composer Bud
Woodruff's mother. The
tune is built on phrases
of easily understandable
material, but the
poignant nature of the
piece is marked with
profundity. From the
subtle bass solo to the
emotional high points,
the piece is inspired by
this strong woman in the
life of the
composer.

English. Walden for
wind quintet was written
in 1978 and commissioned
by the Funen Wind
Quintet. The title is
taken from the American
philosopher and poet
Henry David Thoreau's
novel from 1854 about
living in the woods,
which Thoreau did for two
years. His stay there was
an experiment, an attempt
to strip away all the
artificial needs imposed
by society and rediscover
man's lost unity with
nature. In that
particular sense his
novel is a documentation
of social inadequacy and
a work of poetry (Utopia)
as well. All thought
Thoreau himself never
completed any actual
social analysis he was
way ahead of his own time
in his perception of the
economy and cyclic
character of Nature,
today knownas ecology.
His ideas are
particularly relevant now
that pollution caused by
society has reached
alarming proportions.
Walden was written in a
style of re-cycling and
new simplicity. A lot of
superfluous material has
been peeled away in order
to give space to
different qualities such
as identity and clarity.
Various layers are
encountered in the
quintet such as the
organic (growth,
flowering, Decay),
concretism (mechanical
patterns) and finally the
descriptive (distant horn
calls and other
ghost-like music of the
past enter our
consciousness like a
dream). Walden consist of
four movements. In 1995
another version for reed
quintet was written to
the Calefax Reed
Quintet. $26.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks

Schubert's Mass in G
major is one of the most
popular settings of the
mass ordinary: the
charming song-like
melodic writing,
especially in the Kyrie
and the Credo, forms a
magical counterpoint to
more concertante passages
in the Gloria and the
Sanctus. For a long time
it was thought that
Schubert's final version
was scored for purely
string orchestra, whilst
a version with wind,
brass, and timpani was
thought to be an expanded
orchestration by his
brother Ferdinand
Schubert. However, since
the mid-1990s it has been
known that the parts for
trumpets and timpani were
additionally composed by
Franz Schubert himself
for use ad libitum. The
present edition offers
this Klosterneuburg
Version - with trumpets
and timpani ad libitum,
but without Ferdinand's
wind parts - in an Urtext
edition reflecting
Schubert's own intended
orchestration. This work

Imagine sitting
in a canoe traveling down
the peaceful river,
blessed by the solitude
of nature as the bow cuts
quietly through the
water. Lost in thoughts
of comfort and peace, the
solitude, that only
nature can provide.
Escaping the hustle and
bustle of hurried lives
to watch the deer
maneuver through the
woods and the birds fly
through the air. In the
last section, picture the
majestic eagle soaring
from the treetops as he
makes his way out of

Schubert's Mass in G
major is one of the most
popular settings of the
mass ordinary: the
charming song-like
melodic writing,
especially in the Kyrie
and the Credo, forms a
magical counterpoint to
more concertante passages
in the Gloria and the
Sanctus. For a long time
it was thought that
Schubert's final version
was scored for purely
string orchestra, whilst
a version with wind,
brass, and timpani was
thought to be an expanded
orchestration by his
brother Ferdinand
Schubert. However, since
the mid-1990s it has been
known that the parts for
trumpets and timpani were
additionally composed by
Franz Schubert himself
for use ad libitum. The
present edition offers
this Klosterneuburg
Version - with trumpets
and timpani ad libitum,
but without Ferdinand's
wind parts - in an Urtext
edition reflecting
Schubert's own intended
orchestration. This work
is available in carus
music, the choir app!
