Aho’s String
quartet no. 4 (2021) is
in four movements. The
first, Nocturne, begins
with a hazily muted
melody dominated by the
interval of a minor third
on the second violin.
Though the first movement
begins in nocturnal mood,
there is also some more
forceful music around the
middle. The second
movement, Allegro
capriccioso, is quick
with quirky rhythms. At
times tempestuous, it
faces the players with
the biggest technical and
virtuoso challenges. The
following Largo is slow.
A couple of times in the
first half it is
dominated by soft,
mysterious harmonies. The
tempo marking of the
virtuosic closing
movement is Presto,
leggiore. The movement
begins with quick,
flickering,
will-o’-the-wisp-l
ike music. It later
builds up to an extremely
violent climax dominated
by tremolo figures on the
second violin and thick
chords on the other
instruments. The
flickering music of the
beginning returns at the
end, before dissolving
into silence.

Koopman's new edition of
all 16 organ concertos by
Handel has drawn to a
close. The quality of
this edition has been
highly praised from all
quarters. Source-critical
responsibility goes hand
in hand with a high level
of performance practice
when Koopman provides
interpretative tips for
the ad libitum passages
in the organ part without
restricting the
creativity of the
interpreter who is
interested in stylistic
matters and prefers to
work out his own
solutions. I want to make
an edition that is not a
Koopman interpretation,
but contains only that
which Handel really
wrote. Nevertheless,
there are occasional
performance suggestions
in small print which are
elucidated in the

Koopman offers a
basically unmarked text,
thus leaving the
performance details up to
the performer. Especially
note-worthy is the clear
printing, extensive
preface and detailed
Critical Notes.

part of his third Leipzig
annual cycle of cantatas,
Bach directed the first
performance of his
Ascension Cantata Gott
fahret auf mit Jauchzen.
The libretto was
published at Rudolstadt
during the same year
without any indication of
the autor's name, in a
collection entitled Sonn-
und Fest-Tags-Andachten
uber die ordenlichen
Evangelia. The libretti
in that collection had
already been used during
the Church year 1704/05
at the Court of
Meiningen; their author
may have been Duke Ernst
Ludwig von
Sachsen-Meiningen. Score
