Having
been invited several
times onto the jury of
the prestigious
Certamen Tarrega
in Benicasim, I thought I
would involve a few
composers in a gift to
the father of the modern
guitar. So I asked the
composers to write a
Prelude of the kind that
Tarrega wrote and which
count among his most
significant
compositions. These
Preludes for Tarrega, all
written between August
and November 2015, are
very different from each
other. The common
feature, however, between
these and the Preludes by
Tarrega is their brevity,
an average level of
performance difficulty
and guaranteed easy
listening, even when
written in a non-tonal
language (like the
meditative and melancholy
piece by Emilio Calandin
and the one by Marco
Smaili, with its
Impressionistic feel
reminding one of
Tarrega's most famous
pupil, Miguel
Llobet). In some
Preludes (the ones by
Paolo Ugoletti, Roberto
Tagliamacco, Claudia
Montero) the reference to
Lagrima, one of
Tarrega's most famous
Preludes, is evident in
form, title and some
citations. Ugoletti and
Tagliamacco work well and
expressively on harmony
and counterpoint, while
the Argentinian Claudia
Montero links Tarrega to
a heartbreaking Buenos
Aires... In Alessandro
Spazzoli there is rather
more a connection with
Tarrega's sense of melody
and deep simplicity,
while Marco Reghezza
remembers ironically what
was brewing in European
music when Tarrega was
alive: in fact, his
Como Preludio goes
across the 24 keys - and
even a reference to
Wagner's Tristan
raises its head... I
am delighted for this
volume to come out at the
time of the fiftieth
edition of the Certamen
Tarrega. (Piero
Bonaguri).

Imag
es of the sea figure
prominently throughout my
life and memories: from
holidays on the Atlantic
coast during my Canadian
childhood to my current
Baltic home, and the
imagined, only later
experienced Mediterranean
of my ancestral heritage.
As an immigrant (son of
an immigrant) bound to
two northern countries,
the sea is emblematic of
my twin homelands, from
the expanses of water
surrounding them to those
separating them. A Mari
usque ad Mare. The sea is
also an enduring image of
the unknown, of expanses
unexplored, of the raw
power of nature and, for
too many currently, of
terror holding a hope of
refuge - or the pain of
loss. Such disparate
ideas were captured for
me in the seascapes of
the New York painter
MaryBeth Thielhelm, whom
I met in 2008 during a
residency on the Gulf of
Mexico. Her vast,
abstract, nearly
monochromatic depictions
of imaginary seas in
wildly varying moods were
the catalyst for a
concerto where the piano
is frequently far from a
hero battling a
collective, but rather
acts as a channel for
elemental forces surging
up from the orchestra,
floating - sometimes
barely so - on its
constantly shifting
surface. There are few
themes to speak of,
beyond a handful of
iconic ideas that
periodically cycle
upward. Rather, the
piano's material is
largely an ornamentation
of the more primal
rhythmic and harmonic
impulses from the
orchestra below - a
poetic interpretation, if
you will, of the more
immediate experience of
facing the vastness of
some unknown body of
water. The title
Nameless Seas is borrowed
from one of Thielhelm's
exhibitions, as are those
of the four movements,
which are bridged
together into two halves
of roughly equal weight -
one rhapsodic and free,
the other more
single-minded and direct,
separated only by a short
breath. The opening
movement, Nocturne, is
predominantly calm, if
brooding, darkness and
light alternating
throughout. Lyrical
arabesques sparkle over
gently lapping
cross-currents in the
strings and mirrored
timpani, the piano's full
power only rarely
deployed. The waves
gradually build, drawing
in the full orchestra for
a meeting of forces in
Land and Sea, a brighter,
more warmly lyrical scene
that unfolds in series of
dreamlike, sometimes even
nostalgic visions, which
for me carry strong
memories of sitting on
rocks above surging
Atlantic waves. The third
movement, Wake, is a
fast, perpetual-motion
texture of glinting,
darting rhythms and
sudden shafts of light,
with a prominent part for
the steel drums, limning
the piano's quicksilver
figurations. An ecstatic
climax crashes into a
solo cadenza that grows
progressively calmer and
more introspective rather
than virtuosic. Much of
the tension finally
releases into Unclaimed
Waters, a drifting,
meditative seascape in
which the piano is
progressively engulfed by
a series of ever-taller
waves, ultimately
dissolving into a
tolling, rippling
continuum of sound.
It has been a great
privilege to realize such
a long-held dream as this
piece, and to write it
for not one, but two
great pianists.
Risto-Matti Marin and
Angela Hewitt, both of
whose friendship and
support have been
unfailing and humbling,
share the dedication.
Nameless Seas was
commissioned by the
PianoEspoo festival and
Canada's National Arts
Centre, with the
premieres in Ottawa and
Helsinki led by Hannu
Lintu and Olari Elts.
Thanks are due also to
the Jenny and Antti
Wihuri fund, whose
generous grant provided
me with much-needed time,
and Escape to Create in
Seaside, Florida, the
source to which I
returned to do a large
part of the work.

The
Song We Sing was
commissioned by the Arts
Chorale of Winchester
(Virginia) to honor
founding artistic
director Michael Main and
his husband, accompanist
Richard McPherson upon
their retirement from the
ensemble after 19 years.
Scored for SATB chorus
and piano four-hands, the
score sets three new
poems by Robert Bode,
himself a well-known
choral conductor as well
as a poet. Track Listing:
Let's Move to the Sea The
Song We Sing Morning
Dance “Let’s
Move to the Seaâ€
(#1) references
Michael’s and
Richard’s plan to
relocate from Virginia to
the seaside resort of
Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
The music is marked
“Brightlyâ€
and is highly rhythmic
and dancelike. Robert
Bode’s poem is in
three verses, and the
music follows this
layout, with three
clearly related sections.
The poem “The Song
We Sing†(#2) is a
quiet, and rather
profound, meditation on
the underlying meaning of
choral singing—the
deeper sense of what it
means to sing together.
It underscores the fact
that choirs often create
a feeling of community
where individuals are
accepted for themselves
without prejudice as they
come together to make
music. Like the first
movement, “Morning
Dance†(#3) is
rhythmic and playful. The
poem is organized into
four verses, each
followed by a refrain.
The music, similarly, is
written in four sections
that are based on
closely-related musical
materials, each followed
by a refrain of almost
identical music.
Everything culminates in
the poem’s
ecstatic final line,
“Lift your arms to
the sun, and
dance!†The

Focusing on the
lives of saints and other
holy people, Journey of
the Sacred is a series of
books and music created
to guide members of small
faith communities on
their own sacred
journeys. Unlike many
other guides of this
kind, Journey of the
Sacred incorporates music
into each session with a
pre-recorded CD for
singing along to chosen
hymns and songs. Each
journey offers six
sessions consisting of
prayer, Scripture,
writings by the
particular saint or holy
person, reflection,
silence, sharing, and an
experience by a
modern-day person that
ties into the session's
theme. Each session also
allows for a going forth
in actionÓ for the
group or individual. One
book is needed for each
member of the small faith
community. One CD is
needed for the entire
group. Although created
for small group sessions,
this series also may be
used for individual
meditation. Journeys may
be used in any order.

O
Salutaris Hostia is one
of Eriks Ešenvalds'
most popular pieces.
Originally written for
female voices, the
composer later created a
version for full choir on
which this arrangement is
based. It has a gentle
meditation with the two
soloists drifting across
the soft band
accompaniment,
alternately echoing and
imitating each other or
joining together in
thirds. The effect is
quietly ecstatic, a brief
moment of adoration and
wonderment. This
arrangement can be played
with either two cornets
or two euphoniums as
soloists as the
accompaniment works just
as effectively with
either.
