the composer indicated
that he had in mind a
violin concerto [...] in
E minor [...], it was not
only his friend Ferdinand
David, the Gewandhaus
concertmaster for whom it
was intended, who was
euphoric. The whole
civilized violin world
was awaiting this
concerto - and yet it was
another seven years
before the
much-anticipated
composition was
ultimately published by
the Leipzig publishing
house Breitkopf & Hartel
in June 1845, as well as
simultaneously in London
and Milan. The concerto
particularly appeals
through its innovative
treatment of the solo
part, not only because
the solo violin
strikingly opens the
first movement without a
preceding orchestral
tutti, but also because
of its musical dialogue
with the orchestra. The
Leipzig Gewandhaus
premiere on 13 March 1845
with Ferdinand David as
soloist under the
direction of Nils Wilhelm
Gade served - as so
frequently with
Mendelssohn - virtually
as a proofreading
process. After the
composer subsequently
made extensive changes
that also involved David,
the work first appeared
just short of nine months
later. The first edition
documents the composer's
valid final revision,
which is reproduced as
the work's main version
in the present Urtext

A
mystifying question of
versions surrounds the
Italian: right after the
world premiere in London,
Mendelssohn is
unsatisfied with his
symphony. Since he no
longer has the score with
him, he writes it down
afresh (except for the
opening movement), but
stops at three quarters
of the way. In the
meantime, trusted experts
weigh in with their
views. Fanny Hensel
writes to her brother: I
dont like the change in
the first melody at all;
why did you make it?
Nevertheless, Felix
continues to busy himself
with the first movement,
but ultimately finds no
more time for it and
leaves it primarily in
the form of the complete
early version of 1833,
which is published
posthumously and remains,
to this day, a standard
repertoire piece in all
concert halls. The
revised torso, in turn,
was long ignored. It was
published in this volume,
yet it is clear that the
three movements of the
incomplete final version
of 1834 were from the
composers viewpoint not
at all ready for
publication, seeing that
Mendelssohn had never
critically reviewed them
after having penned
them.

Overture to Ruy Blas,
Felix Mendelssohn
Bartholdy's last
overture, was not
composed as an
autonomously conceived
score, but as the opening
piece of a stage work.
Nevertheless, its
immediate success at the
Leipzig first performance
in 1839, as well as the
fact that no further
contributions to Victor
Hugo's drama followed
from Mendelssohn's pen
soon made it well known
in the concert hall. The
work's special history,
including several
arrangements occasioned
by various performances,
led to the fact that the

circulation in the
