musicians from the
Afghanistan National
Institute of Music were
performing at the
Istiqlal School, home to
the French Cultural
Centre in Kabul. The
venue was targeted by a
suicide bomber with
devastating results,
leaving a number of
students (and ANIM’s
founder and Director, Dr.
Ahmad Sarmast) with
severe injuries. Despite
these most challenging of
circumstances, ANIM
continues to provide an
extraordinary learning
environment for all its
students regardless of
gender, ethnicity or
social circumstances.
They are committed to
assuring musical rights,
rebuilding lives through
music, training future
music educators,
establishing
intercultural dialogue
and to reviving and
preserving Afghan Music.
Gulistan-e Nur: The
Rosegarden of Light is
dedicated with great
admiration to Dr. Ahmad
Sarmast and to the
students and staff of the
Afghanistan National
Institute of Music in
Kabul, particularly
remembering those who
were injured in the 11
December attack. The work

Kevin Bishop and members
of the pioneering
ensemble Cuatro Puntos
who are dedicated to
global co-operation and

Padre Antonio
Soler is the most
important Spanish
composer of keyboard
instruments of the XVIII
century. Born in Olot he
was baptized in 1729 and
died in El Escorial in
1787. As a young boy he
entered the Escolania of
Montserrat, where he
studied composition and
organ, coinciding at the
same monastery with the
also Spanish composer of
that time, Fernando Sor.
Padre Soler spent great
part of his life in El
Escorial as chapel master
and organist and met in
Madrid Italian composer
Domenico Scarlatti with
whom he developped a deep
friendship inspired on
mutual
admiration.
In
spite of the similar
styles of both composers
the fluid inspiration of
Padre Soler excels for
his own personality,
definitely influenced by
Spanish roots.
Furthermore, I ask myself
if the fact of being at
the same monastery of
Montserrat with guitarist
composer Fernando Sor
didn't play an important
role in the future
development of Padre
Soler's style.
I
have transcribed for two
guitars these three
sonatas in the hope that
also the guitarists can
enjoy playing these
little jewels, truly
musical delights, that
Padre Antonio Soler left
for us.

At the request
of the dynamic Eufonix
Quartet (Danny Helseth,
Aaron Tindall, Kelly
Thomas, Pat Stuckemeyer),
I composed Homage for
premiere at the 2015
Northeast Regional Tuba
Euphonium Conference,
held at Ithaca College in
New York.
Compositionally, my
intention was to
capitalize on the uncanny
capacity of the four
musicians of Eufonix to
match tone color and
nuance, always the mark
of a gifted ensemble.
Homage unfolds as a
simple memory of respect,
admiration, affection and
thanks. Set in a timeless
ebb and flow of gently
swelling harmonies, an
introspective calm
emerges as performers and
listeners meet in a
welcome space of repose.
The experience is one of
shared ritual, imbued
with hope and quiet
optimism. Originally
scored for quartet of two
euphoniums and two tubas,
Homage is effective for
any combination of low
brass instruments. The
music takes on
exceptional depth and
meaning when presented by
a large ensemble.

for the Ensemble Modern
as part of the 2013
International Ensemble
Modern Academy and it is
dedicated in admiration
to this iconic group of
soloists. Whilst many art
forms largely depend on
space, music has a
thrilling relationship
with time. Time serves as
a canvas for composers,
and compositions can in
many ways also be
described as sculpted
time. Ancient Greeks had
two words for time, -
Chronos (time in the
traditional sense) and -
Kairos (the opportune
moment). The former is
quantitative and the
latter, qualitative. This
distinction is very
important as we live our
lives in chronos but
experience most of the
important events of our
lives in kairos. For me,
the art of music
composition highlights
this relationship;
whereas music cannot
exist without chronos, it
is the kairos that makes
it worthwhile—the
pursuit of supreme
moments. As an art form,
engraving is very lengthy
and painstakingly
process-driven, not
unlike composing, and
techniques, instruments
and types of engraving
directly inspired this
three-movement
composition. At times,
the inspiration lies in
the engraved artefact
itself. At others, I am
interested in the
technical process or the
instruments utilized.
Methods of production
depend on the materials
used: Chalcography,
xylography and
lithography are
engravings on copper,
wood and stone,
respectively, and these
are represented both
literally and
conceptually by the
ensemble, either in
colour or scope.
Pantograph is an
engraving machine based
on parallelograms where
the movement of one point
in tracing an image is
produced identically in
other points, and etching
refers to the method of
making prints from a
metal plate. Whilst
beauty is found in the
finished engraving, there
are also moments of
beauty in the process of
creation itself.
Therefore, Engravings
uses this art form to
explore both the
uniqueness of these
concepts but also how
they merge during the
creative process.
Engravings has
been composed with the
intention of becoming an
evening length piece in
the future. Therefore,
the composition at this
time, point and format
can also serve as a
consummation for the
envisaged sound world,
gesture, scope and
vision.

The Red
Wheelbarrow holds the
title of this work and
serves as the first song
in a song cycle based on
some of my favorite, but
unrelated, poems. Each of
the poems was chosen for
the simple reason of my
admiration for the work
of each of these
individuals. The choice
of the instruments used,
a quasi- Pierrot ensemble
with some variation, is
influenced by the chamber
music of Arnold
Schoenberg. In each
movement the
instrumentation changes
slightly to fit the mood
of the poem most
effectively. The entire
ensemble only plays on
the first and last
movements, providing a
type of arch shape with
the instrumentation.

The 'Charlie
Parker Yardbird
Originals' were
originally published in
1954 by my dad, Dr.
Charles Colin. In his
memoir, 'Reflections II',
he includes the colorful
story of how it came to
be that he met Charlie
Parker and would publish
this early work. Using
most of Pop's lingo, here
is a synopsis of that
story: 'In the 40's -
early 50's 'I' had eight
studios on the second
floor at 111 West 48th
Street with several
outstanding teachers. One
of whom was Jimmy Abato
who played bass clarinet
with the Met. Between
lessons, Jimmy relaxed at
Jim and Andy's, a bar
frequented by the top
studio and recording
artists where they would
all meet for a few
congenial moments in
between sessions. One day
Jimmy was chatting with
Charlie Parker who
confided that he was
going through difficult
times and was looking for
a way to earn some cash.
Jimmy, knowing that pop
was into music
publishing, suggested
that Parker and he meet
with the idea that he
write a few Be Bop tunes
that could be printed in
book form. Even though
Bebop was not yet in the
mainstream or necessarily
accepted by the music
world, pop had great
admiration and confidence
in 'Charlie Parker' and
