inches. Based on an
Armenian troubadour song,
I WILL NOT BE SAD IN THIS
WORLD is a uniquely
beautiful work for alto
flute (or bass flute)
accompanied by a
pre-recorded audio track
made purely from the
composer’s own
singing. The result is a
fluid interplay between
the live flute and the
composer’s
multi-tracked and
processed vocal
sonorities. The work was
created for Marya
Martin’s
“Eight
Visions†collection
(published by Presser),
and is now available as a
single publication. I
will not be sad in this
world is based on the
song “Ashkharumes
Akh Chim Kashil†by
the legendary
18th-century Armenian
troubadour Sayat Nova.
The song is often played
on the duduk, and your
flute playing should
respond to the
ornamentation,
intonation, and vibrato
of traditional duduk
playing.In playing this
piece, you will want to
be flexible with time:
the 32nd notes are mostly
notated grace notes
coloring the following
note, and can be
compressed towards that
next note for effect.
Similarly, the meter
should be downplayed: use
the pre-recorded part to
give you guideposts, and
then shape your phrases
quite freely around those
guideposts.I strongly
suggest that you listen
to my demo recording of
the piece, as it will
give an indication of
what I am looking for. I
have not transcribed
every note that I sang on
the demo, and similarly,
once you feel comfortable
with the playing style,
you can ornament the
melody with some
flexibility yourself. The
notated turns are meant
to indicate places where
it is most natural to do
some ornamentation.The
piece can be played on
either alto flute or bass
flute. I am hoping for a
certain vulnerability in
your playing, so choose
the flute that will help
you most with that. If
you are playing in a dry
hall, you might consider
slight amplification, not
for volume, but to allow
you to add reverb to your
sound. It will then be
easier to blend well with
the tape part.Optionally,
one (or even two)
additional flutists may
double the lines called
“voice†that
are part of the tape
part. The additional
player(s) should play
more softly than the
soloist, and get even
softer as the piece
progresses and the
electronics take over.* *
*Thanks to Marya Martin
who commissioned the
piece. Many thanks to my
friend and colleague
Margaret Lancaster, who
tried out the piece for
me and advised me about
notation. Thanks also to

sed as an organ solo by
the 17-year-old Ives for
his own performance
purposes, the beloved
Variations on America is
a treat for any occasion,
whether a holiday
concert, a serious
recital, or other special
event. Danny
Holt’s
transcription for Piano,
Four Hands adds a
dazzling new option to
play at home or on stage,
taking best advantage of
Ives’ tremendous
contrasts in color,
dynamics, and
texture. Composed when
Charles Ives was a
teenager, Variations on
“America†is
both a convenient
introduction to
Ives’ body of
work, and an early
example of his
iconoclastic musical
voice and creative
genius. Just a few years
after composing this
piece, Ives would leave
home to study music at
Yale. But until then he
had been taught by his
father, George (who had
been a bandmaster in the
Civil War). George
subjected the young Ives
to experiments such as
singing a song in one key
while being accompanied
in another, or arranging
for two marching bands to
converge on a town
center, with the
resulting cacophony that
ensued.The Variations
exemplifies an early
period of experimentation
in Ives’ work,
spurred on by the unusual
pedagogy of his father.
The piece is particularly
notable for its use of
bitonality in the two
interludes, subtly
foreshadowing more
well-known examples by
Stravinsky, Bartók,
and others by
approximately two
decades.The bitonal
interludes were so ahead
of their time, in fact,
they were omitted from
the first copy that was
submitted to a publisher
in 1892. (Alas, the piece
was rejected even despite
these
“shockingâ€
elements having been left
out, and it wasn’t
published until more than
five decades later.)
There is some ambiguity
about when exactly Ives
added the interludes into
his manuscript copy,
though ample evidence
suggests he had performed
the piece with the
interludes around the
time he notated the piece
in 1891-92. In any case,
in light of this piece
and his other polytonal
explorations from the
last decade of the 19th
century, it seems fair to
give Ives credit for
being a pioneer in this
area!This arrangement for
Piano, Four Hands,
closely follows
Ives’ original
version for organ,
setting aside William
Schuman’s popular
adaptation for symphony
orchestra and William
Rhoads’ band
transcription of the
Schuman orchestration.
Pianists will find that
the piece translates well
to the instrument.
Ideally, the choreography
and logistics of
elbow-to-elbow four-hands
playing approximates the
wild joy one gets from
watching an organist play
the piece (e.g., the
elaborate pedal part in
the final variation).In
preparing this
publication, attention
was paid to details in
the dual Critical
Editions (Presser
443-41003) of both
Ives’ manuscript
edition and the 1949
publication edited by
organist E. Power Biggs
(who is credited with
discovering what had been
a long-lost, forgotten
work.) But as with much
of Ives’ output,
attempting to create a
true
‘urtext’
score is a futile
endeavor, and especially
with a piece such as this
one – in which
Ives incorporated
improvisation in live
performance –
seems unnecessary anyhow.
True die-hards are of
course encouraged to
consult the critical
editions and even find
inspiration in the
orchestrated version.
Generally, performers are
advised to be wild, have
fun, and not to be too
rigid in their
interpretive
choices.Dynamics in this
arrangement mostly follow
the organ score closely.
Pianists will use good
judgment about pedaling
throughout, which should
be straightforward and
intuitive. Courtesy
accidentals have been
provided frequently
– without
parentheses –
balancing the need for
extra clarity in the
context of Ives’
murky musical language,
and a desire to avoid
unnecessary clutter.A few
notes that might inform
interpretive
decisions:mm. 15-16:
There are inconsistencies
here between Ives’
original manuscript and
the 1949 Biggs edition,
regarding the top voice
in m. 15, beat 3 (C# vs.
Cn) and m. 16 (D Major
vs. D Minor).mm. 76-84 &
143-146: In both
Interludes, Ives
emphatically notates
extreme dynamic contrast,
in order to highlight the
bitonality. Although it
may seem counterintuitive
(or even a misprint, as
has apparently been
misconstrued by some),
performers are urged to
follow the
composer’s
marking!m. 109: Two-note
slurs have been added
here for clarity and
consistency with other
similar passages, though
they do not appear in
either the original
manuscript or Biggs.m.
112: The last two eighth
notes of Primo appear as
16ths in the original
manuscript.mm. 183-186:
The original manuscript
has a slightly different
bass line.mm. 184 & 186:
Primo gestures have been
re-written to be slightly
more idiomatic for Piano,
Four Hands.m. 186: The
breath mark at the end of
this bar does not appear
in either the manuscript
or Biggs, but is an
editorial suggestion
– aside from being
appropriately dramatic,
it will indeed be
necessary in a
reverberant hall!I would
like to thank Steven
Vanhauwaert, the other
half of my piano duo,
4handsLA, for his input
on early drafts of this
arrangement.—

Objects is a cycle of
love songs set in the
distant future, exploring
intergalactic longing and
desire. It is scored for
soprano, piano quintet,
and pre-recorded
electronic sounds. When
the piano quintet was in
its heyday, the subject
that permeated so many of
the great Romantic song
cycles was that of
longing and lost love.
Deep-Sky Objects
transfers this trope to
the outer reaches of the
universe In the cycle a
woman sings of her lover
who is far away in a
remote planet in some
unspecified star system.
At moments she remembers
a time when they were
together, but mostly she
longs for him and
stoically imagines that
his presence, even so
remote, gives her
hope:
I can live
in the world
With
your love

I know you

at the end
of the black
universe
The
electronics part often
references various
“sounds from
space,” from
pulsars (which are
routinely converted into
audio signals by
astronomers), the signals
of made-made satellites,
actual audio of the
Huygens probe landing on
Saturn's moon, Titan, as
well as many sounds
suggestive of the eerie,
remote and unfathomable
reaches of deep space.
Each of the ten songs is
preceded by a short
sample, or incipit, which
creates
micro-compositions based
on the title of each
song. The text is written

The
String
Sextet Momentum<
/em> commemorates
the outbreak of the First
World War, the death of
Peter Kollwitz –
who died as a volunteer,
aged just 18, in the
early weeks of the war
– and the manner in
which his mother, the
artist Kathe Kollwitz,
mourned the loss of her
son. The artist worked
through her pain by
creating her most famous
sculpture, The
Mourning Parents. It
stands today at the
German soldiers’
cemetery at Vladslo in
western Flanders, where
her son Peter also lies
buried. During the 18
years that she worked on
the Parents
, Kathe Kollwitz attended
several concerts at the
Volksbuhne in Berlin,
where from January to
February 1927 she heard
Arthur Schnabel’s
cycle of all the
Beethoven piano sonatas.
Schnabel performed the
Sonata op. 111 in c minor
on 26 February 1927, and
this work touched her in
particular, as we can
read in her diary:
“The strange
flickering notes turned
into flames – a
moment of rapture, taking
one into a different
sphere, and the heavens
opened almost as in the
Ninth (Symphony). Then
one found one’s way
back – but it was a
return after having been
assured that there is a
heaven. These notes are
serene – confident
– and good. Thank
you, Schnabel!”
This encounter with
Beethoven’s last
sonata inspired the
artist to take up work
again on her sculpture
after a long interruption
and to consider different
possibilities for
arranging the two
figures. For this reason,
the first minutes
ofMomentum
are derived from this
sonata by Beethoven
– though without it
being quoted in an
audible manner –
and they leave their mark
on the form of the
Sextet. The number 18 and
the date of Peter
Kollwitz’s death
(23 October 1914) also
have a direct impact on
the work’s
dramaturgy. This music is
mostly calm in nature,
but is time and again
interrupted unexpectedly,
being disturbed by unruly
sounds and vehement
eruptions until time
itself seems to dissolve
in an aleatoric passage.
The work ends with an
extended lament on
“seed corn should
not be ground”, a
line from
Goethe’s W
ilhelm Meister’s
Journeyman Years.
Kathe Kollwitz often
quoted this phrase to
argue for peace, and also
took it as the title for
a lithograph that she
made in 1942. -

were definitely new once
again in the mid 19th
century, and particularly
for Leipzig concert
audiences. In fact,
Anselm Hartinger even
wonders what was old in
Bachs music back then...
Given the way that it was
presented, we can say
that this music was at
least partly an invention
of the time of
Mendelssohn, Schumann and
Hauptmann, and was
adapted to musical
practice by its
discoverers for their
purposes, which were
absolutely modern back
then. To bolster these
provocative theses, the
author bases himself on a
wealth of previously
mostly unexamined
material from the years
1829 to 1852, the core
period of the Bach
revival performances.
Hartinger chooses an
investigative approach
that supplies the first
link between Bach-related

local music-historical

to amazing insights. The

Blaserbande is a
completely newly
developed concept for
class and group lessons
with woodwind and brass
instruments. It is
primarily aimed at
children of primary
school age and is the
result of intensive
cooperation with music
schools, brass bands and
primary schools. The
tonal range is the same
for all instruments, so
that all songs and voices
can be worked through
together. Numerous
exercises on approach,
posture, intonation and
register play,
accompanying audio
playbacks and a large
pool of playing pieces
open up new perspectives
for the wind class, from
small group lessons to
representative school
auditions and concerts.
With the Blaserbande we
now have a well
thought-out concept for
young brass and woodwind
players that promises
methodically meaningful
and musically interesting
class instruction. We can
look forward to the
sequel. (Lutz Gohmann,
practicing & making
music6/09) 'Die
Blaserbande' is an
exciting concept for
creative and
practice-oriented music
lessons in elementary
schools and will
certainly offer many wind
orchestras some new ideas
for the training of their
own offspring (Matthias
Riedel, Neue musikzeitung
11/09) Songs for every
tonal range, mostly in
German and overall in
such a way that the kids
think it's cool, so they
really see themselves as
a gang - with real gang
songs. [...] But above
all, this is the
essential characteristic
of the wind band: the
sound material is the
same for all wind
instruments! (Bernhard
Gortheil, author of the
Brass Band, practice

Language:
Spanish. This
composition is a Chilean
'Cueca,' which is a dance
found in many South
American countries that
is de rived from the
Spanish 'Jota' and
contains several elements
from the 'Fandango.'
There are many different
styles of 'Cuecas',
depending on the nature
of the texts or the
region from which they
come. However the rhythm
is mostly written in 6/8,
alternating sometimes
with 3/4, and in minor
keys, and it is danced in
single and independent
couples. Because of its
melancholic character,
this 'Cueca' is thought
to have derived from the
Peruvian 'Yaraví'
and it comes from the
province of Sucre and was
composed in the times of
the Chaco war (that
occured between Bolivia
and Paraguay in
1932-1935). Most of the
authors who composed
texts and popular tunes
in this period are
anonymous. The
instruments that
accompany the 'Cueca' are
generally guitar, bombo
and charango. $4.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks

ISBN
9781622774371. In
the world of music
conducting there exist
fundamental practices
shared by all conductors
regardless of the type of
ensemble they conduct.
Foundations of Conducting
Technique is a
comprehensive beginning
conducting
textââ¬âcompl
ete with pictures, online
videos, and supplemental
conducting
etudesââ¬âto
facilitate the
development of a clear
and expressive conducting
technique. In this
volume, author Frank
Eychaner addresses three
major areas for beginning
conductors: gestural
technique, score study,
and leadership. For
gestural technique, the
text details a number of
technical skills,
including the appropriate
use of the body, the
roles of the right and
left hand, basic
conducting patterns and
their derivatives, an
application of Laban
movement analysis, the
importance of the
conducting planes, and
conducting with varied
articulations (staccato,
legato, and marcato),
among
others.ÃÂ Using
direct language, Eychaner
details clear cause and
effect relationships
between gesture and
sound. In addressing
score study, Eychaner
states that all
conducting gestures must
beÃÂ guidedÃÂ b
y an accurate and
artistic aural image of a
musical work. Rather than
advocating for one
particular approach, this
volume presents a number
of possible score study
methods for the student
to explore. The author
also includes a
convenient and complete
score study checklist.
Finally, the text
addresses how to be an
effective and ethical
leader from the podium.
Eychaner presents the
transformational
leadership
modelââ¬âa
holistic and dynamic
approach to
leadershipââ¬â
as a positive pathway
for improving the
conductorââ¬â¢
s effectivenessÃÂ on
and off the podium.
Supplementing the text
are music etudes to help
students develop the
technical skills of the
conductor. The exercises
are intentionally simple,
consisting mostly of
rhythmic materials and
folk-like melodies, so
that conductors can focus
onÃÂ mastery of
gestural skills.
Foundations of Conducting
Technique is a major
contribution to
conducting
pedagogyÃÂ and an
extraordinary resource
that distills the essence
of effective conducting
gesture. An ideal text
for undergraduate
conducting courses, it is
also a practical
reference for anyone
employed in the field,
including music
educators, church
musicians, leaders of
community ensembles, and
professional conductors
of all ensembles. Frank
Eychaner, an
international leader in
conducting pedagogy, has
been an educator and
conductor for twenty-five
years, working in public
schools as well as with
professional, collegiate,
community, and church
ensembles. He is
currently Director of
Choral and Vocal Studies
at The University of
Texas of the Permian
Basin, where he teaches
conducting, choral
methods, and choral
pedagogy, and conducts

Steve Cowan, …empty
mind, open heart… is a
four-movement suite that
centers around the
intervals of a fifth and
a tritone. Each movement
is inspired by a quote
from the Tao Te Ching by
Lao Tzu. The opening
movement is a meditation.
The aleatoric rhythms and
pacing of the notes are
guided by the breathing
of the performer,
according to specific
instructions in the
score. Out of that
atmosphere emerges a
fluid, serene series of
arpeggios in irregular
rhythms in the second
movement. Each new chord
changes only one or two
notes at a time in a
gradual evolution over
time. The third movement
is a study in rhythm,
sometimes dizzying. And
the piece ends with a
heartfelt, mostly quiet
soliloquy.
Dédié
e à la sommité Steve
Cowan, … esprit vide,
cœur ouvert… est une
suite en quatre
mouvements centrée sur
les intervalles d'une
quinte et d'un triton.
Chaque mouvement est
inspiré d'une citation
du Tao Te Ching de Lao
Tseu. Le mouvement
d’ouverture est une
méditation. Les rythmes
aléatoires et le rythme
des notes sont guidés
par la respiration de
l'interprète, selon des
instructions spécifiques
de la partition. De cette
atmosphère émerge une
série d’arpèges
fluides et sereins aux
rythmes irréguliers dans
le deuxième mouvement.
Chaque nouvel accord ne
change qu'une ou deux
notes à la fois selon
une évolution
progressive dans le
temps. Le troisième
mouvement est une étude
du rythme, parfois
vertigineuse. Et la
pièce se termine par un
monologue sincère,
plutôt calme. $9.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks

Yi’s most
performed and most
beloved choral music is a
series of 10 Chinese folk
songs adapted for
S.A.T.B. Chorus
(published in 3 volumes:
312-41731, 312-41732,
312-41733). This special
version is a setting of
the familiar collection,
adapted for
children’s chorus
and
strings. Remembering
when I studied
composition in the
Central Conservatory of
Music in Beijing, I
learned to sing hundreds
of Chinese folk songs
collected from more than
twenty provinces and
fifty ethnic groups, and
went to countryside to
collect original folk
music every year. I
got to know that the folk
songs are a mirror of
people’s daily
lives, their thoughts and
sentiments, local customs
and manners. They are
sung in regional dialects
and use the idioms of
everyday speech with
their particular
intonations, accents and
cadences. This
correlation between
speech and music
distinguishes folk songs
of one region from
another. I learned
all songs by heart and
sang them back in the
exams every week.Â
They melted in my blood
and became my natural
music language. The
more I walk into the
music life,the more I
treasure the rich culture
I have learned from my
homeland. When I
became the
Composer-in-Residence of
Chanticleer and was
invited to write the
first work for its
concert program, as well
as another version for
its
Singing-In-The-Schools
program, I decided to
introduce A Set of
Chinese Folk Songs to my
American audiences, and
add a new flavor to
Chanticleer’srich
repertoire. The work
includes ten folk songs,
taken from eight
provinces (Anhui,
Shaanxi, Yunnan, Shanxi,
Taiwan, Sinkiang, Jiangsu
and Guizhou) and five
ethnic groups (Han,
Hasake, Uighur, Miao and
Yi). I arranged them
for choirs (men’s
or children’s
chorus) with various
combinations in voices,
to be sung mostly in
Chinese, some in
English.  From the
mysterious mountain songs
originally sung in the
open air with high and
long notes that can carry
over great distances, the
sweet and delicate
melodies of young love
compared with nature, the
humorous antiphony by
little children, and the
lively dancing tune by
villagers, you may get an
idea of various music
styles in Chinese folk
songs according to
geographic, ethnic and
linguistic differences,
and appreciate the beauty
of the Chinese folk
music. The pure choir
sound and the
sophisticated singing by
Chanticleer, in terms of
pitches, language and
musical expressions,
really attract and
inspire me to create some
more new works in the
years to come. In
thisedition of A Set of
Chinese Folk Songs for
standard SATB mixed choir
(with piano rehearsal
score), I divided these
ten songs into three
volumes. They are
Fengyang Song, The
Flowing Stream, Guessing,
Thinking of My Darling,
Mayila, Jasmine Flower,
Riding on a Mule,
Awariguli, Diu Diu Deng,
andMountain Song and
Dancing Tune.—Chen
