I
wrote these pieces
towards the end of summer
2014 at the request of
various flautist
colleagues who were
telling me I should get
back to writing for flute
and piano. Five of the
six pieces are dedicated
to musician colleagues;
all flautists except
Walter the percussionist.
The sixth is to myself,
perhaps a portait of the
artist as a young boy.
These compositions,
however, are not really
meant to be portaits,
just pieces dedicated to
people I work with, and
to some extent inspired
by how I see them, so I
have called them
Sketches. The Sketches
offer short expositions
of themes which I hope
will be enjoyable to play
and to listen to. They
offer some technical
challenges for the
flautist but are mostly
in a 'medium difficulty'
range, in attractive
jazz/pop styles.

The
composer: 1st
movement: Reflections by
the Fjord. Overlooking
one of the mighty fjords
of Norway, my mind and
thoughts are with an old
religious Norwegian
folk-tune, with words by
the famous parson Peter
Dass. The majestic
fanfare-likeopening
reflects the power of God
our Father, the choral
itself heard for the
first time on flugelhorn.
The choral is repeated a
few times, separated only
by some short variations.
The movement ends in
thriumph, with fanfares
and the choral
broughttogether. 2nd
movement: Reflections in
the Old Church. In
this movement my
associations of a summer
day, finding myself alone
in an old deserted stone
church. From the old
walls I hear folk songs,
perhaps like the ones
sung in the church bypoor
fishermen and farmers in
days gone by. Suddenly
the light from the sun
breakes through the small
circular window above the
altar, and a lovely
melody is heard, before
the original figures take
us to the end of the
movement. 3rd
movement:Festive
Reflections. Any
festive occasion can be
reflected in this
movement. from the
bonfire at
midsummer-night to the
children celebrating the
return of the sun in the
northern part of Norway.
from the traditional
sleigh-riding at
Christmas tothe
Celebrations of the
National Day on the 17th
of May each
year.

Earth and Sky
was commissioned by the
BBC for the Proms 2000
season. In keeping with
the millennial theme, a
work presenting a vision
of the future was
requested. Trying to be
helpful, the BBC provided
me with the predictions
of various pundits, but
their ideas seemed
dizzyingly contradictory.
Then the simple thought
struck me that however
varied and complex the
answers, the big
questions will always
remain the same. We may
now have a map of the
human genome, but how to
use the map? How shall I
know where I should go?
How may I see the I
that's
me?
As a
musician I am hopeful
that, no matter how the
world develops, future
generations will still
come together to dance
and sing and play. The
mysterious power of music
to bind us socially and
inspire us individually
seems to be built into
our genes. So, a song of
questions; a song about
music — these were
the ideas which I took to
Vikram Seth, who had
generously agreed to
write the words for me.
The resulting poem
provided lots of
inspiration. It is
entirely monosyllabic,
enabling considerable
variety of rhythmic
treatment. I love its
permutations and its
imagery of paradox and
inversion and I have
amused myself by playing
similar games with the
musical material. But
there is seriousness as
well as fun — the
text's juxtaposition of
the certainty of death
with the search for
purpose in life achieves
great poignancy when sung
by young
voices.

Spirit was
composed in memory of the
renowned clarinetist
Laura Flax. Laura
commissioned Ran’s
first solo clarinet work,
For an Actor: Monologue
for Clarinet, to premiere
with the Da Capo Chamber
Players in 1978. Ran
returned to the clarinet
in many compositions over
the years, sometimes as a
lead instrument and at
other times as an
important voice, yet
always inspired by
Laura’s rich
sound, blazing technique,
and the “brain and
guts†that she
brought to her playing.
As a memorial, Spirit is
not about absence, but
rather a celebration
displaying a wide range
of emotions, with at
least a tiny glimpse of
Laura’s brilliant
spirit and spiritedness.
Only in the work’s
final stretch does the
sense of parting and loss
take over. SPIRIT was
composed in memory of
Laura Flax (1952-2017),
the renowned New
York-based clarinetist
and my cherished friend.
Our musical and personal
association began in 1977
when Laura invited me to
compose a solo clarinet
work, For an Actor:
Monologue for Clarinet,
in memory of her mother,
Hazel Flax, whom I had
known.After composing For
an Actor for Laura I came
back to the clarinet in
many of my compositions
over the years, sometimes
as a lead instrument and
at other times as an
important voice. In all
of my clarinet music
Laura is present. The
rich sound, blazing
technique, the
“brain and
guts†that she
brought to her playing,
and her remarkable
person, have inspired me
in so many ways during
the four decades of our
friendship, and beyond.I
did not want Spirit to be
about absence, though. I
wanted the piece to
exhibit a wider range of
emotions, as well as
capture at least a tiny
glimpse of Laura’s
brilliant spirit and
spiritedness. Only in the
work’s final
stretch does the sense of
“parting,â€
and of loss, take
over.Upon completing
Spirit on October 21,
2017 I found myself
compelled to add at the
bottom of the score the
words “To Laura,
always in my
heart,†as though
in an effort to reach
out, for a brief moment,
and touch the

inner mind: It is a
beautiful, tender and
introvert snapshot of a
moment, a journey into
the thoughts of a person.
The work can be
visualized by a video
edited by myself. It is
filmed shot by my father
on an 8-mm film during a
train trip in Germany in
1972. My grandfather
briefly appears on the
film, at the time the
same age as I am now. As
human beings and parts of
the nature we are a links
in an endless continuum -
the train
tracks reaching out to
an eternity symbolise all
this.

Husky, Brawling takes its
name from the 4th line of
the poem Chicago, written
by Carl Sandburg in 1916
when Chicago was the
heart of the meatpacking
and railroad industries.
When bass trombonist Sun
He commissioned Garrop,
he mentioned a deep love
for Chicago, adding,
“I remember the
first time I walked on
the street in Chicago, by
the corner of Michigan
and Roosevelt, and how I
felt the energy of this
city almost brought my
blood to a boil...â€
Those images inspired
Garrop to write a piece
that conveys the beating
pulse of the city, as
well as its
grandeur. Stormy,
Husky, Brawling takes its
name from the 4th line of
the poem Chicago, written
by the American poet Carl
Sandburg. Dating from
1916, the city of Chicago
at that time served as
the heart of the
meatpacking and railroad
industries. The
poem’s lines
mingle the dark
underbelly of the
city:And they tell me you
are brutal and my reply
is: On the faces of
women   Â
    Â
  and children I
have seen the marks of
wanton hunger.with
immense pride felt by its
inhabitants:Â Â
  Come and show
me another city with
lifted head singing so
proud to be aliveÂ

cunning.As a Chicagoan
myself, I find much of
Sandburg’s
unabashed view of the
city very appealing and
still relevant over a
hundred years later.When

classes in English,
citizenship, music,
theater, and the
arts.

The text
for the first voicing
(SSA) of this piece came
to me in the fall of 2020
while teaching at Crosby
High School in Crosby,
Texas. My students,
though enthusiastic to be
back in Choir, were
struggling to cope with
the civil unrest around
them, in addition to the
pandemic. When
considering how I could
help them navigate this
time, I realized that
they were in need of some
sort of consistency, of
feeling grounded in
themselves. As weÂ
focused on building of
community and
citizenship, this text
and tune came to mind,
each phrase highlighting
an element of personal
and community wellness.I

the circle around me.

me for a long time to
write for the organ
without the use of iron
blocks, extra stopping
assistants etc ....
unusual difficulties that
belonged to my earlier
organ music. I
setmyselfthe task of
Miting a ''handier'' kind
of music for the organ.
Once I had finished
STILL. LEBEN, I didn't
think I had achieved what
I was looking for. True,
the two movements did not
involve odd things, but
handy isn't really the
word for them either. So
I wrote the three
movements in COUNTERMOVE
to tidy up even more. And
since I didn't think that
was enough either, I
wrote the really simple
pieces under the title IN
TRIPLUM. The three
series(eight pieces in
all, 2 + 3 + 3) sound
very different, but they
all take their point of
departure from the nature
and tonal resources ofthe
organ. Everywhere there
is polyrhythm or
hierarchical layering,
polychromaticism,
diatonics and melody (the
last of these only
sparingly and in some of
