Werks Volume IV/9 Niels Wilhelm Gade (1817& 1890) Works Edited by the Foundation for the Publication of the Works of Niels W. Gade, Copenhagen Niels W. Gade is one of the leading Danish composers of the nineteenth century. However only about half of his prolific œ uvre has appeared in print. Given this fact and the growing current interest in Gade, there is an urgent need for a scholarly-critical Urtext edition of his music to meet the demands of both scholars and performers. This edition will contain all of Gade's completed compositions and separate movements as well as the arrangements he madeof his own works and those of other composers. In general, the main text presents the ; definitive version based on Gade's personal copy of the printed work. However, all the remaining sources have also been consulted for purposes of comparison. Every editorial decision is mentioned and justified in the critical report (English). Gade's interest in choral music spanned his entire career. This volume presents more than 40 of his shorter works for mixed chorus, both without and with accompaniment (piano, organ, harmonium or, in one case, brass ensemble). They occupy a no less prominent place in his oeuvre than his large-scale choral works with orchestra. Written between 1839 and 1885, they were intended for many different areas of application: songs for school chorus stand alongside liturgical music, pièces d'occasion, chorales and freely composed works for amateur choirs. The best-known are his Five Songs (op. 13) on poems by Emmanuel Geibel and Ludwig Tieck and the motet O du, der du die Liebe bist, both composed in Leipzig in 1846./ Répertoire / Choeur Mixte

Par GADE NIELS WILHELM. 'I can?t remember when another work made a more lively, beautiful impression on me? ? this is what a very enthusiastic Felix Mendelssohn wrote to Niels Gade in January 1843. On March 2nd he premiered Gade?s C minor Symphony at the Leipzig Gewandhaus. On 26 October of the same year the 26 year old Danish composer conducted the second performance himself and in the following year he was engaged as co-conducter of the Gewandhaus concerts. His first symphony, however, was to remain Gade?s greatest success: unique are its colourful instrumentation, atmospheric melodies and the characteristic sound world which we know as Nordic. This volume presents Gade?s opus 5 as volume I.1 of the Complete Edition ?Niels W. Gade / Works?, edited by Finn Egeland Hansen. Par GADE NIELS WILHELM. Niels Gade (1817-1890), who was born in Copenhagen and spent most of his life there, went to Leipzig in 1843 for further training on a royal scholarship. There he became friends with Robert Schumann and found an eager patron in Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. He is regarded as the most important figure of the Danish musical scene in the 19th century. His charming cycle 'Der Kinder Christabend' was published in 1859 with titles and texts in Danish. Although the first German edition was published in Leipzig in 1860, the English edition was not published in London until 1880. With his five mood pictures 'Weihnachts-Glocken' - 'Weihnachtsbaum-Einzugs-Marsch' - 'Ringeltanz der Knaben' - 'Tanz der kleinen Mädchen' - 'Gute Nacht', Gade portrays the typical atmosphere of a middle-class Christmas evening in the 19th century./ Répertoire / Piano

Gade dated the cantata „Zion“ op. 49 (named “concert piece” in the first edition) on 16 September 1874; the premiere took place on 30 August 1876 during a festival in Birmingham. In Gade’s understanding “Zion” forms “a kind of trilogy” together with the cantatas „Kalanus“ and “The Crusader“ which centres around the “longing for the true light“. The focus of „Zion“ is the history of the Jewish people where a people has received a promise. This is described in Gade’s words in the following sections: a) Introduction – The Departure from Egypt b) The Captivity in Babylon c) The Return – Prophecy of the New Jerusalem”./ Répertoire / Chant et Orchestre

Dramatic Poem. Par GADE NIELS WILHELM. 'Kalanus”, a 'dramatic poem for soloists, choir and orchestra” op. 48 was composed between June 1867 and March 1869 and is based on a text by Carl Andersen. A historical event during Alexander the Great's Indian campaign (326 AD) serves as the origin of the material: Alexander met Indian philosopher Kaljana, referred to as Kalanos in ancient sources. Gade had originally intended to unite the composition with 'Korsfarerne” (The Crusaders) (1866), and another work with Jewish-historical content in 'a type of trilogy”, however, he later abandoned his plan and 'Kalanus” remained in its singular form. The reception of the work was predominantly positive in regard to the music, while form and subject received a somewhat reserved response./ Répertoire / Orchestre
