Cantata for the 3rd
Sunday after
Epiphany. Composed by
Johann Sebastian Bach.
Edited by Reinhold Kubik.
Arranged by Paul Horn.
German title: Herr, wie

music, Cantatas,
Epiphany. Single Part,
Violin 2. Composed 1724.

17 minutes. Carus Verlag
#CV 31.073/12. Published
by Carus Verlag
(CA.3107312). ISBN
9790007044671. Key: G
minor / c minor.
Language:
German/English. In
1724, Bach composed the
cantata Herr, wie du
willt, so schicks mit mir
[Lord, as you will, do
unto me] BWV 73 for the
third Epiphany Sunday.
Like in some other
cantatas from the first
annual cycle, the opening
movement contains a part
for corno which would in
fact have been unplayable
on an instrument of that
era - probably also a
reason why Bach allocated
this part to the organ in
a repeat performance
(both variants can be
performed using the Carus
edition). The unusual
choral movement,
interrupted by
recitatives, is based
quite substantially on a
short four-note motive
which is introduced by
the horn; at the end of
the chorus, the choir
sings it to the words
Herr, wie du willt [Lord,
as you will] - an avowal
which also quite
substantially
characterizes other
movements of the cantata.

Latin. Psalm 130 is
one of the most dramatic
and certainly one of the
Old Testament texts has
most often been set to
music by composers. Out
of the depths have I
cried unto thee, O Lord
... who shall stand?
Matsushita set this
lament pianissimo,
chordally and in a
low-register, using
chromatically altered
chords with sparse,
detached sounds. In
contrast, as the aim and
climax of the work he
sets, most effectively
the hopeful second part
half of the text, with
the Lord there is mercy,
and with him is plenteous
redemption. With the
(optional) use of two
hand bells he introduces
the convincing,
optimistic section in F
major, which, however,
through a reminiscence of
the opening de profundis
leads into a short coda:
but actually Redemption
is only optimism,
something for the future
and not reality. The
level of difficulty
should pose no problems
for a sufficiently-sized
choir with sure
intonation. It is most
impressive when sung
either for worship
services or in concert.

German. Schutz's
setting of Psalm 115
Nicht uns, Herr, sondern
deinem Namen is the only
one of his Psalmen
Davids, published in
Dresden in 1619, which
begins with a unison
intonation, as also found
in his late works
(Schwanengesang). The
three choirs in the work
have different
tessituras. The middle
one is scored purely for
voices, whereas in the
one with a high tessitura
only the lowest part is
sung, and conversely in
the one with low
tessitura only the
highest part is sung -
the extremes are left to
cornetts and trombones.
Through this artistic
treatment, the effect of
the widely-spaced
tessitura used to achieve
color is considerably
enhanced. With this
publication of Psalm 115
in a separate edition,
the last of the Psalmen
Davids is now available
in a separate edition
corresponding with the
principles of the
Stuttgart Schutz Edition.
