Zur
BearbeitungSeine erste
Orgel-Sonate komponierte
Guilmant 1874 und widmete
sie dem belgischen
König Leopold II.
Besonderen Anklang fand
bereits in der
Uraufführung der
Mittelsatz der Sonate,
die Pastorale. Es handelt
sich bei ihr um eine
typische Hirtenmusik im
12/8-Takt, bei der die
Oboe und Klarinette der
Orgel mit lieblichen
Melodien korrespondieren.
Im Mittelteil tritt noch
ein Choral hinzu, der mit
den Melodien der
Pastorale umspielt wird.
Auch die Flöte
zählt zu den
Instrumenten der Hirten,
die in dieser Bearbeitung
mit einem weichen Oboen-,
Klarinettenregister oder
auch einem schönen
Flötenregister der
Orgel in Dialog treten
kann. Da die
Originalliteratur des 19.
Jahrhunderts für
Flöte und Orgel nur
dünn besetzt ist, kann
die vorliegende
Bearbeitung eine
willkommene Ergänzung
des Repertoires für
diese reizvolle
Kombination nicht nur zur
Weihnachtszeit sein, die
leicht zu realisieren ist
und Musiker und Publikum
in Liturgie und Konzert
erfreuen kann.

On
Christmas Eve 1950, the
Italian Radio broadcast a
radio play based on
Adalbert Stifter's
novella Rock Crystal. The
music was written by Nino
Rota, the translation was
made by Gabriella Benci
and Ippolito Pizzetti
(the son of the composer
Ildebrando Pizzetti, one
of Rota's teachers).
Here, too, the duo
carefully edited the
existing piano version.
With these two pieces,
the piano duet repertoire
has taken on a whole new
colour, and both
performers and listeners
can plunge into the
atmosphere of Rota's film
music. Contents: I

Besides the
Weihnachtsoratorium BVW
248, Bach composed an
additional work for the
feast days of the church
year 1734/35: The
Himmelfahrtsoratorium BWV
11 (Ascension Oratorio).
Although in its
dimensions and character
the oratorio is akin to
his cantatas, it occupies
a special position as a
result of the epic text
on which it is based; the
text includes a biblical
story. In particular, the
festive atmosphere and
instrumentation of the
opening and closing
choruses mirror the
triumphant joy of
Christ's ascension. This

The
Programme of Christmas
Carols was first
performed in New Orleans
in 1976. In its original
version, the players were
required to wear
Dickensian costume and a
seasonal narrative
preceded each of the
carol arrangements. The
texts appear

Introduc
tion by Robert
Rohe
The
introductory text,
assembled with the kind
assistance of Father
Peacock of Loyola
University of New
Orleans, was designed for
use where the receptivity
of the audience warrants.
So little is known about
thebeloved Christmas
carols, it is fitting
that a brief sketch of
the carols' past be used
to enhance the familiar
music.
If
desired, the introductory
text may be omitted at
the discretion of the
performers.
The
brief text preceding each
carol should be used to
acquaint the audience
with what to expect, from
a quartet that will be
playing the unexpected.
The text also will pace
the program and will
extend performance time
to around 45
minutes.
In
performance, the bass
viol quartet of New
Orleans wore peaked caps,
and turtle necked
sweaters to simulate the
street performers of
Dickens' time. The choice
of four string basses for
this program was to bring
the closest relatives of
the true viol into
play.
History
and development of the
Christmas
Carol
The
celebration of the birth
of Jesus Christ has been
observed for nearly 2,000
years, through the ritual
of the Christian Church,
with part of that ritual
being devoted to
celebration in song. In
those early days, church
music was sung only, no
musical instruments
taking part in the
service.
The
type of song used by the
church had the name
'plain-song'. It was a
single line of melody,
plain and unadorned, sung
by one or more voices. By
the year 1660 A.D., it
had developed a second
name, 'The Gregorian
Chant', after Pope
Gregory, who encouraged
the use.
Composed by Wilhelm
Friedemann Bach. Edited
by Gunter Graulich.

After
a mysterious opening
where the main thematic
material is stated by a

builds to a dramatic
climax and then leads to
a fast paced dance theme
ending with a folk song
theme. It is a perfect
showcase piece for
festival performance that
is both sophisticated and

In spring
1816 Franz Schubert, just
nineteen years old,
completed his second
setting of the Stabat
Mater in the midst of a
highly productive period.
In contrast with his
first setting written the
previous year, just five
minutes in length, this
time Schubert used the
German translation by
Klopstock as the basis
for his composition.
Stefan Schuck's edition
is the first one of this
work to be based on a
critical evaluation of
the primary sources, with
complete performance
material. The work, in a
dark F minor, with its
text by Klopstock, places
Jesus Christ, rather than
Mary, at the center of
the contemplation. With
his fugues, but
particularly in the
eight-part lamenting
chorus Wer wird Zahren
sanften Mitleids,
Schubert shows himself at
the height of his
creative output. He
composed his 4th
Symphony, the Tragic, at
almost the same time. The
Stabat Mater is a
rewarding work for choral
societies and choirs to
perform, because the
choir has the largest
portion to sing, and the
choral parts are not too
demanding. The
composition is also a
beautiful introduction to
the choral-symphonic
music of Schubert for
less experienced choirs.

This unusual
ensemble begins with a
standard rendition of the
well-known folksong.
However, the soft
choral-like melody
suddenly explodes into a
jazz waltz version!
Greensleeves but not as
you know it - certainly
something a little bit
different for any
concert!
Dit
arrangement begint met de
aloude
Greensleeves-melod
ie, uitgevoerd in een
rustige koraalstijl en
grotendeels ritmisch
gelijk in de stemmen
onderling. De algehele
indruk van dit
arrangement moet soepel
en vloeiend zijn, maardan
wel met een voorwaartse
beweging en drive. Hoewel
het volume nergens
overheersend en luid mag
zijn, neemt de dynamiek
aan het slot toe. Een
interessant
arrangement!
Andre
w Robertsons Bearbeitung
der alten Melodie von
Greensleeves
beginnt in einem leisen,
choralen Stil und
rhythmisch vorwiegend
unisono gehalten. Der
Gesamteindruck ist sanft
und fliessend, die
Einarbeitung eines
Jazz-Waltz-Feelings, ein
Moll-Dur-Wechsel sowie
eine dynamische
Steigerung zum Schluss
hin machen das
Arrangement interessant
und individuell.
L'arrangiamento
inizia con l'esposizione
della linea melodica
originale scritta sotto
forma di corale che si
sviluppa su un unisono
ritmico. In seguito le
voci gravi entrano
nell'universo di un
valzer-jazz.
L'arrangiamento deve
essere eseguito in
maniera fluida, senza
pero mai perdere la sua
vivacita.

Johannes
Brahms completed his
Symphony No. 1 in
September and October
1876 in Lichtenthal near
Baden-Baden. It was given
its first performance in
Karlsruhe on 4 November
1876 under the direction
of Otto Dessoff. Brahms
later personally
conducted the work
several times. After a
thorough revision of the
second movement, the
symphony was first
published by Simrock in
score, parts and piano
reduction in 1877. The
principal source for the
present edition is the
first print of the score
as well as the autograph
transmitted for three
movements and scribal
copies.,,Was kann man zum

It is
difficult to determine
exactly how many oboe
concertos Antonio Vivaldi
wrote. Although the
present Concerto in F
major was earlier seen as
a secure work by Vivaldi
(therefore it has the old
RV-number 458), Vivaldi's
authorship got even more
disputable (in contrast
to the C major Concerto
RV 446 MR 2294). The
doubts cannot even be
dispelled by the
existence of two sources
from a large collection
in Lund, Sweden. The
Adagio central movement
deserves our particular
attention, as it was
transmitted in different
versions in the two
sources. In this first
edition for oboe and
piano, the non-ornamented
version is given first
and followed by the
version supplied by
editor Sandro Caldini
with ornaments typical of
Vivaldi's time, which
make this version of the
Adagio particularly
interesting for
performers.

A copse is a
thicket of trees and
bushes that may be found
in a meadow or in open
land. In England, a copse
will often be found on a
moor. A copse needs a
source of water that is
usually a stream, small
river or pond. A copse
has abundant plant and
animal life because it
provides the perfect
habitat and shelter for
moisture loving plants,
insects, small mammals,
rodents, reptiles, and
birds. If you were
walking through the copse
in the midst of willow
trees, bluebells and
march marigolds, you
would see beautiful
butterflies, dragonflies
and moths. You might see
a frog or toad jumping on
the banks of the pond and
you would hear the call
of numerous birds.
Ornithologists often
spend many hours watching
and counting birds in and
around a copse. Migrating
birds such as geese and
herons may also be
spotted at certain times
of the year. If you sit
very quietly, you might
catch sight of a red fox,
a rabbit or squirrel. A
copse is a happy place to
spend an afternoon or to
go for a walk. Perhaps
you will get to visit a
nature preserve near your
home where you can
observe the wonderful
world of the woodland
wild life that can be
found in abundance in a
copse. To assist you in
