Two
aptitude tests designed
to diagnose and measure
music potential:* The
only brief,
longitudinally valid
music aptitude tests for
Grades K-6. * Crucial in
helping music teachers
adapt instruction to the
individual musical needs
of their students. *
Requires no reading or
music skills. The
administration time is at
most two 20-minute
periods. Both tests have
a similar design. The
“Primaryâ€
test is recommended for
use with younger children
(K-3). The
“Intermediateâ€
test is recommended for
older children or younger
children who find the
“Primaryâ€
test too simple. Test
materials and how they
work: 1. Children take
the test by simply
listening to a tonal
cassette and a rhythm
cassette. Each tape is
only 12 minutes long. 2.
Questions on the tape are
identified on the answer
sheet by pictures, not
numbers or words. The
children must decide
whether pairs of tonal or
rhythm patterns they hear
sound the same or
different. They indicate
their choice by simply
drawing a circle around
the picture on the answer
sheet. These tests
require no reading
skills. 3. The answer
sheets can be corrected
quickly by using scoring
masks. Raw scores are
directly converted to
percentile ranks in the
manual. 4. A profile card
is used for each child
for individual
documentation and the
interpretation of scores.
The tonal and rhythm
results are graphically
compared for each child.
5. A class record sheet
helps interpret the test
scores for the entire
class. 6. The manual
gives complete
information for
administering, scoring,
and interpreting test
results. The manual also
makes suggestions for
formal and informal music
instruction, and includes
a discussion on the
nature and description of
music aptitude, as well
as a comprehensive
bibliography. Complete
kit includes: 100 rhythm
answer sheets, 100 tonal
answer sheets, CD with
tonal and rhythm tests,
introduction to testing
booklet and two research
monographs, one set of
scoring masks, manual,
100 student profile
cards, and four class
record sheets. Items also
available separately.

The
cantata Ihr Menschen,
ruhmet Gottes Liebe (You
mortals, tell of God's
devotion) BWV 167 is one
of the first works which
Bach wrote in his
capacity as Kantor of St.
Thomas's Leipzig. It was
composed for the Feast of
St John, and was
performed for the first
time on 24 June 1723 in
Leipzig. This concise and
lively cantata is scored
for four vocal soloists
and modest instrumental
forces; only the final
chorale Sei Lob und Preis
mit Ehren is for all four
vocal parts and the use
of strings, with the
soprano reinforced by a
slide trumpet. The text
is partly drawn verbatim
from Zacharias's hymn of
praise in St Luke's
Gospel chapter 1. It
praises God's grace and
love, as fulfilled by his
promise of salvation
through Jesus for which
John has prepared the way

Joachim
Raff's Fifth Symphony
Lenore op. 177, composed
in 1872, reveals the
composer as a
representative of the
middle ground between
Neo-German aesthetics and
the symphonic tradition.
It owes its name to G. A.
Burger's ballade, which
is the programmatic basis
of the final movement.
Using this literary
model, Raff oriented
himself to the Berlioz
program symphonies and
the Liszt symphonic-poem
concept, on the one hand,
but on the other, he let
the three preceding
movements follow
traditional symphonic
form. Raff conducted the
Lenore symphony's
premiere in December 1872
in a concert by the
Furstliche Hofkapelle in
Sondershausen. The
concert went to his
satisfaction, although
the audience evidently
did not know what to make
of the work: [...] and
the symphony [...] was
played before this
faintly musical party.
Essentially for the
greater glory of God and
my edification, less for
that of the said public,
which seems to have been
rather horrified by it.
His friend Hans von Bulow
had, however, a great
pleasure in hearing the
symphony the following
year in Berlin. In her
preface, the editor Iris
Eggenschwiler provides
detailed information
about the work's genesis,
documents Raff's ideas
and intentions, and
facilitates a
comprehensive orientation
within the historical
context. Breitkopf &
Hartel is now presenting
for the first time with
this symphony an
orchestral work by Raff
in a modern Urtext
edition, thus also
continuing its
collaboration with the
Joachim-Raff-Gesellschaft
.In collaboration with
the Joachim-Raff-Archiv

By Jennifer
Castellano. Spectrum,
Seven Preludes for Piano
was inspired by a work by
the American artist,
Ellsworth Kelly (b.
1923). The composer
writes, When I was a
freshman in college, I
saw his work entitled
Spectrum at the
Metropolitan Museum of
Art. The work consisted
of thirteen large panels,
and each contained a
different color or shade
of color. The first panel
was yellow and the last
was yellow. To me this
work was a visual
representation of a
chromatic scale played
one full octave up the
piano keyboard. Five
years after the
magnificent sighting at
the Met, I decided that I
wanted to make an audio
representation of the
seven colors of the
rainbow, each represented
by a different tonality
or pitch center: A being
red, B orange, C yellow,
D green, E blue, F
indigo, and G violet.
Spectrum abandons the use
of the conventional
major-minor key systems
and instead uses a scale
which the composer
invented called the
Castellonian Mode. In
it's original form the
scale is spelled C D E F
G G# (or Ab) A Bb C. The
sound of this new tonal
system exhibits both
major and minor-like
qualities and yet has a
new sonority of its own.
The Castellonian Mode was
invented in the summer of
2004 and has served as
the basis of many of her
tonal compositions.

The title was chosen to
represent Biel as the
watch-making capital of
Switzerland. Watch Your
Step! is one part of a
series of 'up tempo'
Sparke marches such as
Slipstream, The Bandwagon
and Jubiloso. After a
bright opening, a
syncopated first theme is
played, firstly by
clarinets and saxophones,
and then by the full
band. A bass strain is
followed by a contrasting
second subject, which is
played twice. The bass
melody returns to herald
a truncated version of
the main theme, before
the opening fanfare
reappears as a coda.

Brahms'

Vivaldi's
setting of Psalm 113
(Psalm 114 in the
Protestant Bible) In
exitu Israel was probably
composed in 1739. Strings
and basso continuo
accompany the
homophonically-written
vocal parts. The text of
this psalm - the longest
of all the vesper psalms
- was set by Vivaldi in
an extremely condensed
composition. Despite its
brevity, his fine feeling
for the emotional content
of the text is
wonderfully expressed.
Even in this one-movement
work the composer creates
space for variety by not
only varying the string
accompaniment, but also
playing with the keys
effectively and sometimes
in surprising ways, or
hinting at the
responsorial style of
psalm settings. Score and

Brahms'
elegy Nanie op. 82, based
on the poem by Friedrich
von Schiller, was
composed in 1880/81
following the death of
the painter Anselm

greatly admired. In
contrast with the poem,
Brahms' Nanie ends full
of hope: after earthly
decline, beauty can live
on in art. As in his
Deutsches Requiem op. 45,
in Nanie Brahms creates a
musical connection
between mourning and
consolation in an
incomparable way.
Inspired by the model of
classical Roman-Greek

the classical verse form
chosen by Schiller -

Text: Lehms, Georg
Christian.
The
cantata Widerstehe doch
der Sunde BWV 54 is now
one of Johann Sebastian
Bach's most popular solo
cantatas. The short text,
which comprises three
movements, comes from a
1711 collection of
cantata texts by the
Darmstadt court poet
Christian Lehms, and
warns in drastic terms
that no sinner will
inherit the kingdom of
God. It is certainly no
coincidence that Bach
allocated this text to an
alto voice, then often
regarded as a symbol for
the repentant sinner. The
cantata comes from Bach's
Weimar period and only
survives in a fair copy
of the score by Johann
Gottfried Walther (music
text ) and Johann Tobias
Krebs (vocal text
underlay). This didn't 't
present any difficulties
in preparing an edition.
In Lehms' word book the
cantata is allocated to
Oculi Sunday (the third
Sunday in Lent), but can
also readily be sung on
other occasions in the
church year. Score and
part available separately

T.N.TAs a matter of
practicality, when I was
first asked to write a
piece for the New York
Theatrical Community
Choir in 2005 by its
music director, David
Wolfson, I immediately
decided to write a Kyrie.
After all, I thought...,
the text is only about
four words and eliminated
the need for a lyricist.
Most appealing, however,
was the fact that it
would bring me one step
closer to finishing the
Mass that I was in the
process of writing. If
ever there was a case to
be made for divine
inspiration this appeared
to be it. David Wolfson
liked the idea and
casually mentioned that
there was another Kyrie
and a religious hymn on
the program. He also
mentioned that the choir
consisted predominantly
of actors that sing.Like
a bolt of lightning,
divine intervention
interceded whereupon I
instantly realized that
he needed a piece to wake
up the audience, not
another Kyrie. I took a
breath and spontaneously
began to talk through and
improvise the concept of
a piece that became the
basis for Taxi.At that
moment I was clueless as
to what kind of piece I
would write but it
appeared to be a good
idea at the time. David's
reaction to my
presentation was
something like Okay,...I
have no idea what you are
talking about but let's
try it. After a very
successful public
performance, he was
delighted that I decided
not to write a Kyrie and
remarked that writ-ing a
piece like Taxi for this
group was like feeding
raw meat to a pack of
hungry lions. At that
moment, the idea of doing
a trilogy of similar
pieces was born. For the
last two seasons of the
choir's existence I was
asked to write a new
piece and... as a matter
of practicality, I
happily agreed.-- Joe
GianonoNote: Taxi, Noise,
and Time may be performed
separately.

Watch
Your Step! was
commissioned by
Stadtmusik Biel from
Switzerland and is
dedicated to the mayor of
Biel/Bienne, Erich Fehr.
The title was chosen to
represent Biel as the
watch-making capital of
Switzerland. Watch Your
Step! is one part of a
series of 'up tempo'
Sparke marches such as
Slipstream, The Bandwagon
and Jubiloso. After a
bright opening, a
syncopated first theme is
played, firstly by
clarinets and saxophones,
and then by the full
band. A bass strain is
followed by a contrasting
second subject, which is
played twice. The bass
melody returns to herald
a truncated version of
the main theme, before
the opening fanfare
reappears as a coda.
