The
Advent cantata Machet die
Tore weit has long been
one of the most
frequently performed of
Telemann's sacred works.
Among the copies of this
cantata which have been
handed down is a copy by
J. S. Bach which bears
testimony to the high
respect he paid to his
then more celebrated
colleague from Hamburg:
It is a copy of the score
in the hand of the
Thomaskantor which was
made for a performance in
Leipzig on Avent Sunday
in 1734 (therefore during
the same period as the
first performance of
Bach's Christmas
Oratorio). Of the four
solo singers the soprano
and bass, each of whom
has an aria, are
indispensable. The brief
alto solos in the opening
chorus can be sung by a
member of the choir, and
the tenor recitative can
be sung by the soprano
soloist. This work is now
available in carus music,
the choir app! Score and
part available separately

The
29-year-old Franz
Schubert composed his
German Mass (D 872) in
1826 at the request of
Johann Philipp Neumann,
who also wrote the text
with the original title
“Songs for the
celebration of the holy
sacrifice of the
Mass.†Its name
derives from the the fact
that - unlike most sacred
works of the time - the
German language is used.
Its great popularity can
be explained primarily by
the straighforward and
memorable music of
Schubert; in addition,
the German texts, in
contrast to the
traditional Latin Mass
texts, focus on people
with their earthly
worries and needs, which
certainly reflected
Schubert's own religious
convictions. The name
SAM-Klang takes the three
voice parts from the
arrangements -- Soprano,
Alto and Men -- and
combines it with the
Scandinavian and German
words for
“sound†to
create the portmanteau
word “sound
together†or
“harmony.â€
The series offers basic
and advanced choral
repertoire. In addition
to new repertoire and new
arrangements, you will
also find essential parts
of the classical German,
Scandinavian, French and
English SATB repertoire,
carefully and
considerately reworked
for SAM. The arrangements
retain the characteristic
features of the original
movements and have almost
the same richness of
timbre, resulting in
works which sound nearly
unchanged to an audience.
Piano reductions of all
choral movements
facilitate rehearsal
preparation. The
arrangements offer
development opportunities
for all voice sections,
bringing new life and new
quality to SAM choir
work. SAM-Klang enables
youth choirs to gain
access to classical
choral literature and
ensures that mixed choirs
who face challenges in
finding singers for all
male voice parts continue
to have access to
well-loved
repertoire.

The
baroque cantata libretto
by Erdmann Neumeister
focuses upon the aged
Simeon in the Temple, who
desires to leave this
world and is longing for
the hereafter. Telemann's
setting is appealing
through its poetry,
warmth and ardor, and
through the exemplary
balance of its overall
form. The two chorales
which begin and end this
seven-movement work are
fashioned with particular
artistry and care.
Formally, the center and
heart of the work is a
motet-like choral
movement to the words
Selig sind die Toten, die
in dem Herrn sterben
(Revelation 14:13) - Also
suitable as a cantata for
Eternity Sunday, and for
funerals and memorial
services. Score and part

The cantata
Schmucket das Fest mit
Maien has survived
without any information
about the time of its
composition, its purpose,
or its scoring. The
librettist is also
unknown, although there
is a comparatively
similar text in the work
of the Silesian poet Hans
Assmann Freiherr von
Abschatz (1646-1699),
printed in Leipzig in
1704. Since the copy of
the score that serves as
the source for this
edition was probably
written after 1708, and
the work is closely
related to the cantata
Daran erkennen wir (PB
32090), it could have
been written during
Kuhnau's first years as
Thomaskantor from 1701
on.The text set to music
provides information
about the purpose of the
cantata. In the course of
the work, the image of
the bridegroom and his
bride from the Song of
Songs is reinterpreted as
the sending of the Holy
Spirit upon the
congregation of
Christians. In the first
part, passages from the
Song of Songs predominate
while the second part
quotes their symbolic
interpretations or treats
them in free poetry. In
the concluding chorale, a
stanza from Philipp
Nicolai's Wie schon
leuchtet der Morgenstern
(How beautifully the
morning star shines), the
outpouring and the flames
are also mentioned, so
the purpose to the feast
of Pentecost is
clear.Another special
feature of the cantata is
the varied and colorful
instrumentation with the
scoring of two flutes,
two oboes and bassoon in
individual movements, in
addition to the usual,
sometimes divided
strings.
