Spanish. The Viola
First Steps collection,
is divided into four
volumes and is aimed at
young violists who want
to start learning the
instrument together with
musical language and
theory. Each book is
divided into different
teaching sections, every
one containing the
musical language
necessary for exercises
and works. Alongside the
exercises, this volume
contains popular songs,
pieces from classical
authors in different
periods and cultural
context - consisting of
quotations, anecdotes
relating to the Viola and
information on the origin
of the instrument,
composers and curiosities
. Beside technique and
theory, this book will
help violists to develop
their rhythm
skills,prepare for
auditions and more. The
MP3 CD is fundamental to
the method and will help
students to achieve the
objectives in each
section. Each song is
recorded in three
different ways. The first
track is the complete
song accompanied by
another instrument with a
slow tempo. The second
track is the same piece
with its real tempo. The
third track is only the
accompaniment so that the
student can play along.

Three
Sound-Poems after
Paintings by Andreas
Willscher (2017) are
dedicated to organist
Philip Hartmann and the
art-loving community of
the Pauluskirche in Ulm,
Germany. The music is
inspired by three
paintings by German
composer (and artist)
Andreas Willscher (b.
1955). The pieces take
their musical shapes and
colors from the specific
details of the paintings.
The three paintings
represent different
styles: a landscape, a
religious theme, and an
abstract. The first
movement, Sonnenfeld (Sun
Field), is inspired by a
bright painting of the
sun illuminating the
green field behind the
composer's small house in
Sainte-Radegonde
(Dordogne/Perigord,
France). A resplendent
and majestic section of
full sun harmonies
surrounds a middle
section with more motion.
The second movement,
Gebet des Hl. Franziskus
(Prayer of St. Francis),
is inspired by a painting
showing St. Francis of
Assisi in prayer. Francis
has been a frequent theme
in Willscher's music
since his appointment at
a young age as organist
of St. Francis Church in
Hamburg. The third
movement, Laetare
(Rejoice), is inspired by
an vibrant abstract
painting comprised of
bold colors. The
alternation of the blocks
of rich color are
mirrored in the block
harmonic shifts in the
movement, which is a moto
perpetuo, building
towards the organ's
fullest sounds.

Francesca
da Rimini is a drama
for music in two acts by
Saverio Mercadante,
libretto by Felice
Romani; the text is
freely inspired by the
unfortunate events of the
two lovers, Francesca and
Paolo, of which Dante's
Comedy (canto V)
also
narrates. According to
some scholars, the first
performance of
Francesca da
Rimini took place in
Madrid in January 1828;
however, this date is not
reflected in the Diario
de Avisos de Madrid, a
publication that daily
reserved a conspicuous
space for news on the
shows staged in the
Spanish city: the years
between 1828 and 1831 in
fact do not mention the
work. Furthermore, no
printed libretto of
Mercadante's Francesca
da Rimini is
preserved today –
an inexplicable fact, if
one admits that the
performance took place.
The text of the opera can
be largely traced back to
the one prepared by
Romani for the homonymous
work by Antonio Carlini
(Naples 1825), which
Mercadante was able to
know before his stay in
Spain. Following the
missed Spanish premiere,
the opera should then
have been represented at
La Scala Theater in a
subsequent season, with
reliability the imminent
one of the 1831/32
carnival; but shortly
thereafter the impresario
died: thus the
contractual obligations
involving him were no
longer fulfilled, and,
for a second time,
Mercadante was then
forced to shelve the
plans about Francesca
da Rimini, put aside
now for several months.
In fact, the scoring
– very similar to
that of the operas
planned at La Scala in
the same Carnival period
– assumes that
Francesca da
Rimini was destined
for a theatre of great
means, like few others in
Italy besides La Scala.
But the failure of the
opera may also have been
due to the presence of
the part of an amoroso
en travesti,
Paolo, to whom Mercadante
assigns a prominent role
also in terms of music:
in 1831 and in Italy such
a solution was no longer
so frequent as a few
years before or in
provincial theatres, and
so this condition may
possibly have affected
the fate of the
negotiations in Milan,
and may explain how the
composer was then unable
to have the score
performed
elsewhere. This
critical edition is based
on manuscript copies
conserved in the Museo
internazionale e
Biblioteca della Musica
di Bologna (autograph
score) and in the
Biblioteca Histórica
Municipal in Madrid
(score and separate
parts). $121.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 3 to 4 weeks

German. Based on
the subject of the
eponymous novella by
Prosper Merimee, 'Carmen'
is George Bizet's last
work. The composer died a
few weeks after the
unsuccessful world
premiere in Paris on 3
March 1875. To the
opera-lover of today, it
is inconceivable that
this work with its
numerous wonderful
'Spanish' melodies and
rhythms - developed by
Bizet virtually 'from
afar' as he had never
travelled through Spain -
could ever be a failure.
Over the course of time,
however, 'Carmen' has
become one of the most
popular and most
frequently played operas
long since.Apart from the
libretto, this edition
contains introductory
commentaries of Kurt
Pahlen who also adds
information on the
compositional structure
and context to the
musical as well as
external and internal
dramatic action of the
opera. A short synopsis
and a brief outline of
the genesis bring the
work into relation with
the composer's entire
oeuvre and life, thus
offering a comprehensive,
richly illustrated
introduction. $17.99 - Voir plus => Acheter

of the music of Spain,
FantasÃa Española
features four exciting
yet contrasting sections
and challenging parts for
all players. Three of
Spain's most famous
composers are represented
in this medley arranged
by Bob Phillips. The
piece begins with an
exciting, driving excerpt
from Asturias (Leyenda),
by Isaac Albéniz,
which, though written for
piano, is most often
heard on guitar. The
setting of this section
allows the violins and
violas a display of
virtuosity with its
unrelenting rhythmic
drive. Beautiful, lyric,
and emotional, Tango in
D, also by Albéniz,
will showcase the
musicianship of the
entire orchestra.
Originally written for
piano, the strings will
shine in this second
section of the
arrangement. The third
section is the slow and
lyric, Adelita. Drawn
from the deep treasure of
Spanish guitar music and
written by the father of
classical guitar,
Francisco Tárrega,
this piece is simply
beautiful. The medley
concludes with Danza
Ritual del Fuego from the
ballet El Amor Brujo.
Written by Manuel de

the string setting drives
to a fabulous and
dramatic
finish.(5:45). $10.00 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 1 to 2 weeks

Hungarian Folk. In
2014, Chanticleer
commissioned me to make a
new arrangement of the
Hungarian-Romani folk
song Jarba, Mare Jarba
for their 2014 touring
program. Passed down
orally through the Romani
communities, this
beautiful folk song, with
text in a language called
Beas (beh-osh), speaks of
a deep longing to visit
one's homeland, a place
where the singer can
never return. Chanticleer
consists of twelve men
whose vocal ranges span
from low bass to high
soprano, equivalent to
the range of a mixed
choir of women and men. I
composed slow sections of
original material to
represent the singers'
longing to return home;
these are interspersed
with the folk song's
traditional fast
sections. The
incorporated shouts and
calls in the score are
typically found in the
performance of Central
European folk songs. I
hope you enjoy singing
this new version of
Jarba, Mare Jarba that
contains all of the vigor
and excitement of the
Chanticleer version.
PERFORMANCE NOTES All
spoken sounds (indicated
by x noteheads) should be
performed by individuals.
Feel free to elaborate
with more sounds of your
own in the tradition of
Eastern European folk
music. If the piece is
memorized, feel free to
experiment with clapping
on the off-beats of m. 93
to the end. TEXT

She shares stories by
taking audiences on sonic

others are complicated
and dark - depending on
the needs and dramatic
shape of the story.
