The No. 11
Bus is a music-theatre
work in which musicians,
dancers and mime all play
an equal part. It has
been described as an
apocalyptic comedy, and
both comic and terrifying
elements should be
exploited as far as
possible. The setting is
a mythical journey of the
No. 11 bus in London,
which runs between
Liverpool Street and
Hammersmith. This can be
adapted to suit the needs
of the particular group
that is performing it.

This
Christmas cantata is an
uncanny recapture by
Maxwell Davies of a
relatively simple modal
style: luminous,
sometimes plaintive,
sometimes rapturous. A
linked series of George
Mackay Brown settings
designed to give pleasure
(if sometimes strenuous
pleasure) to a
non-professional choir. A
spiritual mystery is
glimpsed in an Orcadian

Work for 2
Trumpets, 2 Horns and 2
Trombones premiered in
the Museum of Scotland in
1998 by members of the
Scottish Chamber
Orchestra. Maxwell Davies
has relished
incorporating brilliant
tuckets and alarms for
brass in his larger-scale
scores too much to write
a perfunctory fanfare; a
seminal influence was the
statue of St. Michael on
the Castel Sant'Angelo in
Rome, where he studied in
the late 1950s, generator
of high trumpet fanfares
throughout his output
which resurface in
apocalyptic style towards
the end of his orchestral

This
work was commissioned by

first performed on 11th

Vancouver, Canada, by
Valdine Anderson

(mezzo soprano), Paul
Moore (tenor) and Kevin
McMillan (baritone), with
the Vancouver Bach Choir

the composer. Like
Vaughan Williams in his
Job: A Masque for
Dancing, Davies was
inspired in part by
William Blake's 21
engravings for the Book
of Job. His oratorio,
however, is less
dependent on finding
parallels for Blake's
visual details, given the
direct poetry in David
Lemon's adaptation of the
Stephen Mitchell
translation from the
biblical original, it is
hardly surprising that
the spotlight should be
so much on Job's
suffering litany. The
baritone has the lion's
share of the setting,
though the other soloists
occasionally reinforce
his plea and chorale-like
episodes universalize his
predicament. Davies
frames with work with two
seminal plainsong-like
passages; there is also
plenty of dramatic
contrast both within
Job's monologues and in
the vivid orchestral
writing for the smarmy
Comforters, the initially
shrill God who finally
appears out of a dazzling
orchestral whirlwind and
the animal life he uses
to illustrate the wonders
of creation to a humbled
Job.

This is - so
far - the earliest
composition by Davies to
be available for
performance, and mighty
interesting it is.
Written while he was
still a young student, it
provides a candid glimpse
of the thing that
concerned him: how music
could be both
forward-moving in the
classical Western sense
(this is, after all, a
piece for a wholly
conventional medium) and
repetitive in the manner
of the Indian and
medieval music in which
he was interested. What
results is a singular
machine geared to an
intermittent ostinato in
the first violin. This
movement for string
quartet was first
performed by the Arditti
Quartet in May 1983, as
part of the 40th
Anniversary Gala concert
of the Society for the
Promotion of New Music at

Davies'
Brass Quintet study is
exuberant in style and
does not disapoint with
its rare quality being a
consistent and fully
developed structure and
is as substantial as you
might expect a string

provide the repertory

chamber music, insofar as
the players are involved

This
is effectively a work in
three movements -
Allegro, Andante
cantabile and Presto -
which Davies likens to
'three obstacle courses,
bristling with technical
difficulties'. However,
as he goes on to say,
'young people are
naturally gifted with
extraordinary rhythmic
skills which normally
remain untapped'. Given
the opportunity, older
children have here the
material for a highly
arresting piece of
music-making. Scoring
also includes a small
wood block, a small
temple block and a small
suspended cymbal. The
xylophones are one each
of the following:
concert, soprano, alto
and bass. The two
glockenspiels are soprano
and alto and the
metallophones are bass
and deep bass (a
vibraphone may be used
instead of the latter).
These studies will
provide a challenge to
all percussionists, for
whom there is a distinct
shortage of suitable
studies. Duration c.

Royal Philharmonic

its 40th birthday. The
first performance took
place in June 1986 at St.
Magnus' Cathedral,
Kirkwall, as part of the
tenth St. Magnus

first performed by Isaac
Stern, Davies's Violin
Concerto brings together
two streams in his music:
symphonism and
folk-fiddling. In its
strongly developed
substance, it asks to be
measured in the company
of Beethoven, Brahms and
Sibelius, while there is
also, particularly in the
middle movement, a strong
element of the Scots
lament. The orchestra is
generally muted in
colour, though there is a
dramatic role for the
timpanist. There are
three movements, played
without a break - this is
only one of many
connections with the
Mendelssohn Violin
Concerto. Duration c.

If Davies's
Cello Concerto has
already evoked
comparisons with Elgar's,
that is perhaps an
indication not only of
its wealth of solo melody
(there is hardly a page
where the cello is not
singing, or if not that,
then dancing), and of its
predominantly slow
tempos, but also of its
musical stature. This
second Strathclyde
concerto is a virtuoso
piece for the entire
ensemble, which is used
almost throughout as a
clutch of soloists rather
than as a tutti block.
The general tone is one
of passionate but
interior dialogue,
especially in the opening
Moderato and the slow
movement; and though the
finale is more extrovert,
the work ends back in
quietness and
rumination.

There are
seven songs and an
instrumental interlude,
making all together an
entertainment that
provides opportunity for
very simple stage action
and dancing: nothing at
all elaborate is needed
in the way of scenery and
costumes. The voices are
in unison throughout, and
their part is always
doubled by instruments,
which should make it
relatively easy for quite
young children to learn
their way into Davies's
delightful tunes. The
references to Hoy are
incidental, and could
possibly be adapted to
suit the locality of a
particular performance.
In any event, most of
these tall stories and
rhymes will appeal to
children everywhere. Set

Unusually
for him, Davies starts
his Bassoon Concerto not
with slow music but with
speed and brilliance: the
opening is a Presto,
initiated by the strings,
and only at the entry of
the soloist does the
tempo relax to that of a
real introduction. Out of
this grow a big dancing
Allegro. The slow
movement begins and ends
with a simple song,
around fantastical
ornamentation from the
soloist. The finale is
again a recitative and
dance, with a slow coda.
The whole work is an
immense show of stamina,
poetry and athleticism
for the bassoon, set
against an orchestra
coloured by low wind
(alto flute, clarinet in
A, bass clarinet,
contrabassoon, horns).

The
solo flute here is kept
in high profile by the
absence from the
orchestra not only of
other flutes, but also of
violins and oboes; in
addition, the trumpets
are used sparingly (they
do not, for instance,
play in the slow
movement), so that for
much of the time the
flute is playing against
a mellow ensemble of
clarinets, horns,
bassoons and low strings.
If this is, nevertheless,
one of Davies's most
open-spirited pieces,
that comes partly from
the ready flights of the
soloist, partly from its
glockenspiel
accompaniments in the
outer movements (replaced
by ticking claves in the
Adagio), partly from the
dancing character of so
much of the music, and
partly from the harmonic
clarity, in a light
region not far from C
minor. Flute part with
piano reduction of the
orchestral score.

Dibdin.
When Haydn
was not around, there was
always Charles Dibdin
(1740-1814) who regaled
London with his songs at
the same period. Davies's
arrangement of four of
them makes an amused but
also affectionate picture
of the man. The vocal
lines are essentially
unchanged, but the
accompaniment is
sometimes teased towards
new metres and harmonies.

This
unaffected but effective
piece is a homage to the
late Marjorie Linklater,
a much-loved friend from
Orkney, and a charming
set-piece for violinists
of moderate ability. The
slow introductory adagio
serves the function of a
fond elegy, proving the
simple effect of moving
between D minor and D
major. It serves the
songful quality of the
violin, as does the
wistful central episode
of the main sequence; but
an exuberant love of the
dance is the essence of
the allegro, with the
high, bright sonority of
the instrument very much
to the fore. It was first

The
story centres on the
English princess Caroline
Mathilde (1751-1775),
sister of George III, who
at the age of 15 was sent
to Denmark to marry the
17-year-old eccentric and
schizophrenic Danish
King, Christian VII. The
ballet portrays her
unhappy marriage, the
King's growing madness
and her fatal love-affair
with Struensee, the
King's influential
physician, which leads to
their arrest, his
execution and her exile,
at the age of 20,
separated from her two
young children. This
suite begins with the
act's opening number: a
boisterous, stamping
dance to which the people
rudely mock Queen
Caroline Mathilde and her
lover Struensee. After
this comes a dark Adagio,
The Conspiracy, in which
the theme passes like
persuasion from mouth to
mouth, its variations
suggesting the different
attitudes of the
conspirators, firmly
controlled by the
brass-driven gestures of
the Queen Dowager. The
conspiracy then works
itself out at a court
masked ball, from which
the suite includes two
dances: a gavotte, and a
slow, lubricious
passacaglia that is a pas
de deux for Caroline
Mathilde and Struensee.
The Arrest comes with a
gathering rush of music
that envelops the King,
the Queen and Struensee,
leading to a vociferous
climax in which they are
held apart. In The
Execution, slow white
music for wordless female
voices, harp and low
strings is interrupted by
pathetic, alienated
outbursts from the King.
The suite ends, as does
the ballet, with a quiet
adagio lament for
clarinets and alto flute
as the Queen goes into
exile. Score. Duration c.
33mins.
