Few baroque
composers were ever able
to create work as sunny,
as joyous as Vivaldi did
in this beloved Gloria.
The contrast of mood
throughout the work as it
moves through the drama
of the Mass to its
satisfying double final
movement shows the
composer at the height of
his powers.Vivaldi
composed this work in
Venice in about 1715,
during his fruitful time
at the Ospedale della
Pieta. In his lifetime
this priest, composer and
virtuoso Violinist
achieved enormous musical
success. Considering his
great popularity in the
modern era, it is
difficult to believe that
public appreciation of
his work declined after
his death and that the
Gloria languished
undiscovered
forcenturies. It wasn't
until 1957 that the
restored work was heard
again in its entirety.
Since that time, this
moving and joyous Gloria
has been recorded more
than one hundred times
and perennially appears
on concert series around
the world.

The
so-called 'Anna Maria
Partbook' consists of an
elegantly bound volume in
red leather containing
the violin part of 31
highly virtuoso violin
concertos, 26 of which
are by Vivaldi. The
collection represents the
personal repertoire of
the Venetian composer's
most gifted pupil, the
famous 'Anna Maria della
Pieta', who also played
the viola d'amore,
mandolin, theorbo and
harpsichord. Twenty of
the Vivaldi concertos are
known from other
manuscript sources and
are therefore familiar to
us in their complete
versions. The remaining
six -- three for violin
and three for violin and
organ -- are unique to
the Anna-Maria Partbook,
and, because they are
incomplete, have not
hitherto been part of the
Vivaldi performing canon.
Now, as a result of
Federico Maria Sardelli's
rigorous musicological
research and painstaking
work of reconstruction
based on many concordant
sources, we are at last
able to enjoy these six
concertos in startlingly
persuasive
realizations.

Text.
This text is
taken from the Dies Irae
Sequence from the Requiem
Mass. It is a
contemplation of the
arrival of judgment day.
The A-sections, mm. 1-29
& mm. 43-end, are a
manic depiction of the
fierce wrath of judgment
day. They should be sung
with fire, crisp
consonants while always
enunciating the accents
in order to realize the
full effect of this
powerful text. The entire
demeanor of the tone and
facial expressions should
change for the B-section,
mm. 30-42 as it is a plea
for mercy. The audience
should realize the change
in this contrasting
section. Translation Dies
irae, dies illa: Day of
wrath, that day Solvet
saeclum in favilla: shall
dissolve the world into
embers Teste David cum
Sibylla: As David
prophesied with the
Sibyl. Voca me cum
benedictis :Call me to be
with the blessed. Salva
me fons pietatis : Save
me, fount of pity. The
Sibyl is a reference from
a Greek word, which means
Prophetess. In this
context, the word appears
in plural, referring to
many prophetesses. David,
or King David, has long
been considered prophetic
among biblical scholars.

Juhani Nuorvala
(b. 1961) wrote The Five
Chords That Shook My
World (2020) for pianist
Nicolas Horvath's Hommage
a Glass project and it is
dedicated to him. It's a
fantasy meditation on the
Train/Spaceship chords in
Einstein, that repeating
five-chord progression
(Fm - Db - A - B7 - E)
about which the composer
has said that there's
something strange,
because it never fails to
lift the audience to its
feet. The duration of the
piece is c. 6'30'', and
it was premiered by Emil
Holmstrom at RUSK
festival (Pietarsaari,
Finland) 20th November
2020. A notable variety
of influences -
microtonality, American
minimalism, New
Romanticism, popular
music, techno - has been
regarded as a special
feature of Nuorvala's
idiom. Despite this he is
not a collage artist;
instead he has blended
various ingredients to
create a mode of
expression entirely his
own. Nuorvala's works are
often marked with
frenzied rhythmic drive.
He makes music using
elements and materials
that both the mind and
the body respond to. He
finds these elements not
only in old or new
classical music but in
various forms of urban
popular music, such as
the electronic music of
modern dance clubs.

“A
lmiraâ€,
Handel’s first
opera, was well received
when premiered in 1705 at
the Theater am
Gänsemarkt in Hamburg.
The director was Reinhard
Keiser, who, remarkably,
had himself already set
Friedrich Christian
Feustking’s text
to music. The role of
Fernando was sung by
Johann Mattheson. The
translation used by
Handel leaves several
Italian arias in their
original language,
resulting in a delightful
mixture of German and
Italian.
The opera
which, after sundry
entangled romances, ends
in the wedding of three
couples, is characterised
by exuberant scenes: the
procession at
Almira’s crowning
ceremony, a duel, a
prison scene and a
masked-ball involving the
three continents Europe,
Africa and Asia.
The vocal score
to “Almiraâ€
by George Frideric Handel
brings about a small
sensation: Whilst
conducting a reenactment
of this work in 1732,
Georg Philipp Telemann
removed the Aria no. 28
“Ingrato,
spietato†from his
conducting score. Since
then this aria has been
deemed lost. Due to
necessity only the edited
vocal text devoid of any
music was presented in
the 1994 volume of the
“Halle Handel
Editionâ€.
Thanks to a recently
discovered contemporary
manuscript copy from the
beginning of the 18th
century which was found
in the music library of
the Mariengymnasium in
Jever, this aria has now
been made available to
performers for the first
time in this new vocal
score edition. Previous
to this the corresponding
pages could only be seen
as a facsimile in an
article of the
“Göttinger
Händel-Beiträgeâ
. Now the aria can
be performed again.
Furthermore, with the
help of this new source,
missing measures in the
basso continuo which had
initially been completed
by the editor of the
“Halle Handel
Edition†volume,
could be reconstructed
from the basso continuo
part of the Bellante aria
“Ich brenne
zwar†(no. 71).
