The present

relevant sources. The
preface sketches the
work's genesis from the
moment of its conception
in Rome in late December
1879 (Yesterday, out in
the streets, I heard a
wonderful folksong that I
will most certainly make
use of.) to the first
reviews, in which
Tchaikovsky was accused
of triviality and of
having made an extremely
unfortunate choice of
themes. Yet this did
nothing to hamper the
worldwide success of the
work, and Tchaikovsky's
composer colleagues also
culled ideas from it: a
few years later,
Tchaikovsky himself was
the dedicatee of Nikolay

The Famous
One in the Leading
EditionBeethoven spent a
relatively long time on
his 5th Symphony. Thus,
first sketches can
already be found from as
early as 1804, four years
before the work was
premiered in Vienna in
December 1808. Not only
impressive is its
striking opening theme,
letting everyone know
immediately that this is
Beethoven being played,
but also its nickname
symphony of fate. Nothing
in the sources prefigures
the much-cited fate,
musically knocking here
at the door. The
autograph of the score
and the set of parts
prepared from it,
including Beethoven's
revisions, serve as the
main sources of this
Urtext edition, together
with the missing copy of

only incomplete in

When Ludwig
van Beethoven wrote the
present two works around
1800, the Romance as a
genre designation for a
soulful, melodious
instrumental piece was
anything but established,
despite the occasional
piece bearing this title.
Beethoven himself named
the pieces Romance in the
autographs, but offered
them to Breitkopf &
Hartel for publication as
Solo. His brother Karl
even spoke of 2 Adagios
to the publisher.
Nevertheless, Beethoven's
two Romances for violin
achieved lasting
popularity ever since the
publication of the first
editions in 1803 and
1805.The present Urtext
edition takes the
autographs and first
editions as its main
sources.

Schumann's
A minor concerto is
considered as the
ultimate romantic piano
concerto. Since the
Schumann anniversary year
2010, musicians will be
able to base their
performance on a complete
Urtext edition. The state
of the sources is
unfortunately patchy, as
the original version of
the first movement, a
Phantasie of 1841 that
was given two trial
performances, can no
longer be reconstructed.
On the other hand, the
posthumously published
score raises certain
questions, since it
diverges from the
editions (solo part and
orchestral parts)
authorized by Schumann
and published in 1846,
after the first
performance. The pianist
Mitsuko Uchida
contributed the fingering
for the version for two
pianos. Schumann's great
solo concertos are thus
available in their
entirety from Breitkopf,
in editions prepared with
the expert help of major
interpreters: the Cello
Concerto with Heinrich
Schiff and the Violin
Concerto with Thomas

Ton
Koopman's new edition of
all 16 organ concertos by
Handel has drawn to a
close. The quality of
this edition has been
highly praised from all
quarters. Source-critical
responsibility goes hand
in hand with a high level
of performance practice
when Koopman provides
interpretative tips for
the ad libitum passages
in the organ part without
restricting the
creativity of the
interpreter who is
interested in stylistic
matters and prefers to
work out his own
solutions. I want to make
an edition that is not a
Koopman interpretation,
but contains only that
which Handel really
wrote. Nevertheless,
there are occasional
performance suggestions
in small print which are
elucidated in the
Critical Commentary. (Ton
Koopman in Concerto)
Koopman offers a
basically unmarked text,
thus leaving the
performance details up to
the performer. Especially
note-worthy is the clear
printing, extensive
preface and detailed
Critical Notes.

The cantata
O heilige Zeit [O Holy
Time] of the former St.
Thomas cantor Johann
Kuhnau is the ideal
baroque festive music for
small scorings. Even
though this is the larger
of two cantatas with this
text underlay, it can be
performed by four
soloists (SATB), single
or double strings, and
continuo organ. The
participation of a choir
in non-soloistic passages
is optional, for
historically unproven.
The cantata was composed
in the years 1704/05 and
can therefore be placed
in Kuhnau's term as St.
Thomas cantor in Leipzig.
A contemporary text by
Erdmann Neumeister is
fitted with a modern
musical garb here while
keeping unconditional
adherence to it. Using a
structural artifice as
simple as it is
effective, he provides a
ritornello-like musical
equivalent to the
repeatedly recurring line
of text O heilige Zeit!.
This edition continues
the series of works by
Kuhnau started in the
Pfefferkorn Musikverlag.
Another festive music by
Kuhnau with larger
scoring is found in the
Magnificat in C major,
deemed a direct
predecessor of Bach's
Magnificat.

Just like the Lobgesang

Psalm joins the motet and
cantata forms into a
highly expressive unity.
The work begins in eight
parts a cappella and
leads to a vigorous
orchestral movement. The
use of the harp in
Romantic church music was
innovative and
provocative in
Mendelssohn's day.The
piano-vocal score made by
Mendelssohn himself was

Written
early, orchestrated
lateThe cycle Seven Early
Songs on texts by Lenau,
Rilke, Storm and other
poets was put together in
1928, more than 20 years
after the composition of
the individual songs.
From the large amount of
songs for voice and piano
that he had written in
his early years, Alban
Berg selected seven of
them which he then
orchestrated. After
serious consideration, he
laid down a definitive
sequence in which the
tempo constantly
alternates while the
orchestral instruments
symmetrically recede
before picking up again.
Once the piano and
orchestral editions were
printed, the Seven Early
Songs quickly conquered
concert halls in both
scorings. They are still
at home on the concert
stages of the world today
which is reason enough to
present this work by
Alban Berg in an Urtext
edition following the
Violin Concerto. The
orchestral material can
now be purchased for the
first
time.
