The collected songs for
voice and piano of
aclaimed choral conductor
and arranger Stephen
Wilkinson. This album
includes settings of
Marvell's poem The
Garden, a joyful
expression of
horticultural delights
that cleverly combines an
almost atonal idiom with
elements of a Gilbert and
Sullivan patter song. The
title work The Sunlight
on the Garden is a
setting of the MacNeice
poem of the same name,
and evokes darker moods
of wartime by the use of
a constantly evolving
harmonic palette. In the
field of choral music,
Stephen Wilkinson is a
genius. (Yorkshire Post)
Simply a great choral
conductor (South China
Times) No praise could
overstate the merits of
Stephen Wilkinson's
direction (The
Guardian).

Thre
e Strides of Light is
inspired by the light and
its behaviour in
different circumstances,
appearances and
surroundings. The work is
in three movements, but
they are played together
attacca.
The
first movement starts off
with a headstrong theme
on the left hand. This
motif has persistent
momentum, like a train,
and one could think of it
as the rays of a setting
sun. The beams are
straight and relentlessly
penetrate our eyes. The
seven-bar repetition on
the left hand supports
this mental image, until
the repetition ends and a
new thematically central
motive starts to emerge,
bringing new kind of
texture for the last rays
and dance of the setting
sun. At the end, the
light vanishes into the
night.
Second
movemement, slow rubato,
depicts the first rays of
the rising sun, they drop
behind a morning cloud
into the day, growing,
developing and becoming
yet faster. Eventually
the day opens up in all
of it sunny glory. The
music leads us towards
the third movement, in
which one bathes in the
rays of the sun. The
repetative motive of the
first movement returns,
but by now it has been
transformed into
something else. A pensive
quintuplet-passage
emerges, paving ground
for the final themes of
the work. The ending of
the work is thick in
sound, depicting the
relentless glare of the
sun and the heat sun
creates. Within the
entire work, one can
imagine to have gone
through a whole 24-hour
period on the sea, in
which the three strides
of light are apparent in
different parts of the
day.

Everyone
suddenly burst out
singing; And I was filled
with such delight As
prisoned birds must find
in freedom... These
opening lines to Everyone
Sang by the British war
poet Siegfried Sassoon
feel as relevant today as
they did when the poem
was first published in
1919. It was after the
end of World War I and
these words capture so
much of the collective
exhilaration, relief, and
pure joy about the Great
War finally coming to an
end. And yet Sassoon
himself felt none of that
when he wrote this poem.
In his own words, he was
feeling dull-minded and
depressed. Perhaps his
time in the trenches was
still too recent. One of
the reasons the creative
arts are so powerful is
that a poet like Sassoon
(or a painter like Van
Gogh or a composer like
Mahler) can take their
own feelings of deep
sadness or pain and
transform them into
something beautiful, even
uplifting. Everyone Sang
is a celebration of the
promise that things can
get better, that there
are things worth looking
forward to. The
poem itself has so much
rhythm and musicality.
The appearance of
suddenly in the first
line of each verse gives
those verses a rush of
energy. Attention to the
crescendo in measure 7,
and again in measure 37,
from mf to f will help
the listener experience
that rush. There are
expressive opportunities
with so many of the
poet's bold choices of
action words - burst,
winging, and shaken. Then
there's alliteration - a
poetic device that can be
overdone, but Sassoon
strikes a wonderful
balance. Suddenly/singing
(measures 6-7 and 10-11)
Find/freedom (measure
21-22) Winging/wildly
(measure 23) Setting/sun
(measures 47-49)
Was/wordless (measures
65-75) Give these
alliterations just a hint
of emphasis (without
overdoing) to bring out
the natural rhythm of the
text. And just as
O is set apart in the
poem by punctuation, I
wanted the musical
setting - in measure 57 -
to honor that feeling of
wonder - ...O, but
Everyone Was a bird; and
the song was wordless;
the singing will Never be
done. Friends, there is
so much good ahead, so
much to be excited about.
May the singing never be
done. Everyone

...and sundry
movements of the heart...
for Tuba and Piano. The
four movements of this
work explore very diverse
(sundry) musical
territories: abstract and
serious, songlike,
humorous, pensive and
transcendent. Many of the
musical ideas were
generated in spontaneous
improvising sessions or
by singing--hence,
movements of the heart.
Prelude is anchored in
its structure by a bold,
serious gesture that is
heard at the beginning,
middle, and end of the
movement, developed
differently each time.
The two intervening
episodes are contrasting
in tempo, and materials:
the first is more
abstract, the second a
strong, focused melody.
Song, the second
movement, is a warmly
lyrical tune in a
straightforward setting.
The third movement,
Vaudeville, is
light-hearted and witty.
Standing Stones is titled
after numerous sites in
the British Isles where
ancient people erected
huge stones in circles,
singly, or even lining
broad avenues. The
incredible effort
required to do so is
mind-boggling, given the
tools available to the
people. And that they
were able to make
near-perfect circles,
with stones aligned by
the positions of sun and
moon and seasons is
further evidence of their
intelligence and
dedication to ideas and
deep feelings far beyond
the daily tasks of
survival. The music
begins very quietly, in
deep tones, enigmatic
harmonies, and
introspective melodies.
The music gradually takes
on a brighter sound until
it reaches an ecstatic
climax.

Moon and Sun (for two
soprano soloists and
mixed choir) is a setting
of verses from the
Kalevala, the most famous
of Finland's poetic
folk-epics. The Mistress
of the North has buried
the moon's face in the
motley stone, charmed the
day's dawning deep into
the steely mountainside
with her song. Viitanen
combines a contemporary
musical style with folk
ballad melodies from the
southern Baltic, and
applies the relative
distances between the
stars of Ursa Major and
Ursa Minor
constellations, according
to his own formula.

Everyone
Sang was written for a
wedding blessing at Wells
Cathedral on 26th May
2007. The choir on that
occasion featured many
singers from the operatic
world and this, combined
with the emotional nature
of the occasion, explains
something of its ecstatic
style. The poem is truly
beautiful and offers much
opportunity for
word-setting. Opening in
unison, the musical
material follows the
wonderful images of the
poem leading to a
shattering climax for
everyone's voice was
suddenly lifted. A warm
chord emerges for the
setting sun before the
mood darkens slightly for
the following lines
before the final pages of
profound peace; the
singing will never be
done is repeated until
almost inaudible and
finally left hanging in
space. An excellent
addition to the
remembrance and war
commemoration repertoire
for use in concert hall
or church, especially
during the centenary
commemorations of the
First World War.
