The composer, pianist and piano teacher Leopold Ko?eluch (1747-1818) was one of the leading Czech musicians in 18th-century Vienna. His 50 sonatas for keyboard bear witness not only to the transition from the harpsichord or clavichord to the pianoforte, but also to the evolution of the classical sonata at the turn of the 19th century.Until now there have been few modern editions of this music. Our new edition, prepared by Christopher Hogwood, is the first to present all of Ko?eluch's sonatas for solo keyboard. Thus it comes as no surprise that many of the pieces in this volume are arrangements by Bach of original compositions and of works by other composers. Next to the Sonatas BWV 525?530 and the Concertos or concerto movements based on pieces by other composers BWV 592?596, the volume also contains the Trio in D minor BWV 583, the Trio settings BWV 585?587 as well as the early versions of BWV 527 and 528. La gestation de la 2e Sonate en sol dièse mineur de Scriabine, bâtie en deux mouvements, est lente et fastidieuse. Les premiers travaux remontent à l'année 1892. Cependant, durant l'été 1896, après qu'il eut déjà exécuté sa sonate à plusieurs reprises en public à Paris, Scriabine, totalement découragé, écrivit à son ami, l'éditeur et mécène Belaïev: 'J'ai certes terminé la Sonate, mais je n'en suis pas du tout satisfait, bien que je l'aie remaniée à sept reprises'. Ce n'est qu'en 1898 qu'il fut content de son travail et qu'il fit publier l'oeuvre.
