Forgo tten Peoples was written over a period of twenty years, from 1970 to 1989, without being planned as a series beforehand. It contains six parts in all, each an independent work in several movements. In it the Estonian composer Veljo Tormis has incorporated elements of the vanishing folk tradition of the Finno-Ugrian peoples, melodies and texts more or less sunk into oblivion. My creative interest earlier involved me in searching to identify the musical vernacular of my own people, the Estonians. Now a new, logically related theme was found for my creative mission: the fate of small nations, as Tormis puts it. The performing group chosen was the mixed chorus, a cappella. According to Tormis, a purely vocal treatment best retains the original form of folk songs - a principle that underlines all his folkloristic works. Karjala saatus (Karelian Destiny) dating from 1989 is a cycle of Karelian runic songs (in Karelian).

These formulas, used in the fast growing field of “Chaos theory”, are relatively simple, but they generate fascinating and surprisingly “organic” patterns when shown graphically on a computer screen, or played as music. One should think that such a mathematical approach would lead to sterile and 'theoretical' music. The sound world of Stonewave, however, is not one you would associate with math books. The steady, insistent pulse, and the use of sequences put squarely up against each other or divided by long rests suggest an invisible ritual. A ritual for what? Well then, let it be a ritual for the exorcism of some 'evil spirits' which now ride our part of the world under the name of Liberalism, making people the servants of the Market Forces instead of vice versa. Stonewave is therefore an incantation, as it seems that only divine forces can save European culture from a political system that proclaims the Jungle Law as the guiding principle in social and cultural life. Edu ardo Toldra (1895-1962) was a Catalan virtuoso violinist, conductor, and composer, whose students included Ros-Marba and Montsalvatge. His compositional work consists largely of songs, folk dances, operas, and orchestral pieces; rather traditional in style, it was initially dismissed as old-fashioned compared to many of his contemporaries. Today however, a revival in interest in Catalan folk music and its influences mean he is growing in popularity.

Coleccion De Canciones: Volume 1 gathers together some of his best-loved songs for Voice and Piano, showcasing his simple, warm, lyrical style. Arranged for soprano or tenor recorder, these include Oâ??Carolanâ??s classically influenced â??Lord Inchiquinâ? and â??Eleanor Plunkettâ? as well as â??O Gentle Doveâ? and â??Cuckoo Dearâ?â?? both examples of the strong tradition of song in Wales. A few of these songs have taken on a life of their own in modern times. â??Bonny at Mornâ?, a popular traditional tune of northern England and Scotland, was arranged for soprano voice and harp by the 20th century British composer, Benjamin Britten. â??The Skye Boat Songâ? originally recounted Bonnie Prince Charles Edward Stuartâ??s journey to the Isle of Skye after his defeat at the historic Battle of Culloden. Later, the song evolved into a lilting lullaby and was more recently used as the theme song for the popular Outlander television series.

Departing slightly from recorder notation practice, author Marcia Diehl has judiciously arranged these melodies complete with spare slur markings to aid the amateur player in authentically and musically rendering these tunes.
