Igor Stravinsky liked to use different stylistic devices or embedded them in his personal musical language: Be it that he took a Gallop by Jacques Offenbach or composed Circus Polka for a Young Elephant or a ragtime. After the outbreak of the Second World War and his final move to the USA in 1939, he was in particular influenced by jazz music. In 1940 the composer wrote a Tango for piano which he arranged for chamber music ensemble in 1953: It is a strictly structured three-part tango on which Stravinsky imposed his harmony, his musical language. Arranged for string quartet by Wolfgang Birtel, the work is a perfect addition to the classical concert repertoire but also an entertaining, yet demanding musical piece for playing chamber music at home.

Although very elementary, the pieces are composed in a wide variety of styles in order to provide a well-balanced musical diet for the young performer. L'oeuvre du compositeur brésilien et le pianiste Ernesto Nazareth (1863 1934) attire les amateurs de plus en plus dans ce pays. Après sa formation, il s'est concentré sur le divertissement léger et joué plusieurs années dans l'orchestre du cinéma Odeon, à Rio de Janeiro où Heitor Villa-Lobos a joué en tant que violoncelliste aussi. Pour lui, Nazareth a écrit le tango du même intitulé, et le compositeur collègues l'a loué comme 'la véritable incarnation de l'âme brésilienne'. C'était son 88 de tango Nazareth qui a fait l'un des compositeurs les plus influents du Brésil du 20e siècle. Mezmer for string quartet is an adaptation of the last movement of Re-Collecting ASTORoids, an earlier suite for orchestra from Kats-Chernin. Commissioned by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the suite was written in tribute to Astor Piazzolla and is clearly inspired by tango, though Kats-Chernin uses various rhythms as her source of inspiration. Mezmer is a miniature and has an intimate, smoky feel with a bluesy violin solo laden with vibrato. An air of solitude and reflection surrounds the piece. / Quatuor A Cordes
