680160909605. The
title is a play on words,
but the composer had his
own ulterior motives in
mind when composing this
piece. He wanted a piece
that was fun to play, but
that helped developing
musicians work on their
rhythmic skills. Matt
Putnam uses the feel of
action film soundtracks
to create the mood of
this interesting new
piece. Interesting
grooves in the percussion
throughout add to the
piece’s feel of
mystery and thrill. To
understand my thoughts in
writing this piece, I
thought it best to define
the two ideas that give
the piece its title:
ulterior motives and
musical motifs. Ulterior
motives occur when you
believe that a person is
doing something for some
unknown or hidden reason.
Often, they are used in
action films or
literature to increase
the drama and tension of
the story. Musically, a
motif is a short rhythmic
and/or melodic idea. When
I wrote this piece, I
must confess that I had
my own ulterior motives:
I wanted to create a
piece that was fun to
play, but I also wanted a
piece that would help
students develop their
rhythmic counting skills.
In this piece, I use a
motif of a two
eighth-note pattern which
jumps from section to
section to help me
achieve my ulterior
motive.Mimicking the mood
of action films whose
characters often have
ulterior motives, the
mood of the piece is
suspenseful and exciting
as the motif jumps from
section to section
throughout the ensemble.
The motif keeps you
guessing as it occurs on
all four different beats
of the measure sometimes
ascending, sometimes
descending, and occurs
sometimes in the interval
of a second and sometimes
the interval of a third.
Interesting grooves in
the percussion throughout
add to the piece’s
feel of mystery and
thrill.I have no ulterior
motives when I say that I

9790207002990. Au
coeur du Tibet (In the
Heart of Tibet) was
commissioned by the -
then newly founded -
Association for the
development of saxophone.
The members wanted to
mark that event with
several first
performances given
simultaneously in
different cities of
Switzerland, France and
United States, which all
were schedulded February
11, 2000. The piece
starts with rhythms and
finger drummings on the
soundboard of the guitar.
Then, within a long
meditation, the heart
starts to beat,
interrupted by silences.
The tension culminates
into a sequence full of
life and movements,
followed by rhythmical
noises on the saxophone
keys accompanied by the
gitarre, as a
reminiscence of tibetan
sounds: spoken words,
ritual horn (Dung Chen)
and a drum. And the heart
is beating again. A
tibetan singing bowl is
ending the piece and I
hope it will keep
resonding for a long
time... Caroline

Programme
note
A Light Hour
is for ‘any number
of percussion
musicians’ (but a
minimum of ten). The
duration is about 60
minutes. The
instrumentation is in
principle open, as long
as percussion is used
within the three types
specified in the score:
skin, metal and wood.
Each musicianuses two
sound sources with two
different sounds, one of
which is bright (or
light) and the other
dark. Certain passages
also include tuned
percussion instruments
– vibraphone,
xylophone, marimba,
gamelan, glockenspiel,
steel drums, crotales and
the
like.
The
work integrates and
combines a number of
rhythms that
Nørgård has
used in percussion works
since the 1970s, for
example in Early Spring
Dance (for choir and
percussion), and
percussion works like I
Ching, Easy Beats,
Whirls, Zigzag, Nemo
Dynamo and Echo Zone
I-II-III.
Special
“tone-feasts”
(the composer’s
term) – followed by
a rest – are an
recognizable me
lodic feature of the
work.: the first minute
end with a short
tone-feast (and a rest),
the first four minutes
end with a tone-feast
lasting a minute (and a

of an hour ends with a
tone-feast of four
minutes (and a rest)
– and the work ends
with a tone-feast lasting
quarter of an hour (and a
rest, when the work is
over
...).
The
first 15 minutes have a
bright, light character
throughout, and alternate
between rhythms
and melodic play. The
following 15 minutes are
more insistent and
decidedly percu

whereas the third quarter

Whizzing,
growling and rattling
– you can produce
all kinds of sounds with
the harp, not just the
fairy-tale shimmer and
glissandos that you first
think of. Lotta
Wennäkoski composed
Sigla for harp and
orchestra (2021-2022) in
close collaboration with
the harpist Sivan Magen,
to whom the concerto is
dedicated. The title of
the concerto, Sigla, has
different meanings in
different languages. In
Italian, it means a
jingle; in Icelandic, it
means sailing; and in
Tagalog, spoken in the
Philippines, it means
vivaciousness or
enthusiasm. Wennäkoski
has not specifically
referenced these in the
movements of the concerto
as such, but she does
allow that the various
meanings of the word may
be identified with the
music according to the
listener’s
perception.
The
recording of the work
(Ondine ODE1420-2) was
premiered with the
Gramophone award as the
the best release in the
contemporary category in
October 2023.
This
product is the solo
part.
The
orchestral material is
available for hire from
the
publisher.

Dances is a Suite in
three movements for 2
solo tubas and big band
(2 alto saxophones, tenor
saxophone, bariton
saxophone, 4 trumpets,
horn in F, 3 trombones,
bass trombone, xylophone,
vibraphone, marimba,
piano, bass guitar, drum
set) written in 3
movements. It is a
typical example of the
versatile composing
talent of Roland
Szentpali. His approach
to jazz is well
structured, with subtle
fast or slow groovy
sequences of the
different instrumental
and rhythm sections,
stimulating (and how !)
the two solo tubas
interacting with each
other. I. Blow On
Fire starts with a free
cadenza that is an
introduction merging into
fast elements which
appear all along this
movement. The two tubas
start to play once the
melodic elements burn,
and from then develop
their own dynamic
shifts. II. Oriental
Flavors is another kind
of groove (as the
movement title suggests),
beginning with a short
opening of the trombone
section falling into
secco rhythm that beats
in contrasts with the
stimulating lyrical
intervention by the two
tubists. III. Cinder
Dance has a specific
introduction that leads
the musicians and the
audience on the path of
various trances over
several uneven time
signatures. At a certain
point, the 2 tubas fly
through cadencial
sequences just over the
rhythm section, before
ending on a long
collective and steamy
final progression.

setting of The First Noel
begins with a percussion
intro and dissonant
chords that lead to a
beautiful flute duet. The
melody is freely adapted
and at times, outright
changed, to give this
arrangement a very
different sound. Using
rhythmic motives, tone
clusters, altered
melodies and all the
sounds available for a
concert band, the piece
takes the audience on a
journey that leads to a
statement of the original
tune at m. 118. Everyone
gets the melody at some
point. After a
chorale-like section, the
composition returns to
the fast and upbeat
sounds of the beginning.
Your musicians and
audience will love this
unique version of this
old-time favorite. When
performing this piece,
start dark and mysterious
and let the sounds
crescendo through the
introduction all the way
to m. 21, the first
statement of the hymn.
Make sure you keep the
tempo moving so the
arrangement does not lose
excitement. Keep the
flute duet, and later the
trumpet duet, nice and
light. At m. 118, play a
little slower and in a
standard chorale style,
being careful to let the
flute and oboe voices be
heard. Let the low voices
have the reins at m. 126
as they play the melody.
Pick the tempo back up to
the original tempo at m.
145 and push to the end.
The main thing is to
match articulation
throughout the band--at
the beginning and at the
end, think light accents
and separation, and at
the chorale section at m.
118, more legato. Keeping
everyone on the same page
with articulation will be
the key to making a great
performance. This

Programme
note
A Light Hour
is for ‘any number
of percussion
musicians’ (but a
minimum of ten). The
duration is about 60
minutes. The
instrumentation is in
principle open, as long
as percussion is used
within the three types
specified in the score:
skin, metal and wood.
Each musician uses two
soundsources with two
different sounds, one of
which is bright (or
light) and the other
dark. Certain passages
also include tuned
percussion instruments
– vibraphone,
xylophone, marimba,
gamelan, glockenspiel,
steel drums, crotales and
the
like.
The
work integrates and
combines a number of
rhythms that
Nørgård has
used in percussion works
since the 1970s, for
example in Early Spring
Dance (for choir and
percussion), and
percussion works like I
Ching, Easy Beats,
Whirls, Zigzag, Nemo
Dynamo and Echo Zone
I-II-III.
Special
“tone-feasts”
(the composer’s
term) – followed by
a rest – are an
recognizable me
lodic feature of the
work.: the first minute
end with a short
tone-feast (and a rest),
the first four minutes
end with a tone-feast
lasting a minute (and a
rest), the first quarter
of an hour ends with a
tone-feast of four
minutes (and a rest)
– and the work ends
with a tone-feast lasting
quarter of an hour (and a
rest, when the work is
over
...).
The
first 15 minutes have a
bright, light character
throughout, and alternate
between rhythms
and melodic play. The
following 15 minutes are
more insistent and
decidedly percu
ssion-based, Afro-Cuban,
whereas the third quarter
