Martin E.
Marty, Emeritus Professor
at the University of
Chicago, says it best in
the forward of this new
hymn tune collection,
“Teach Our Hearts
is full of music that
will indeed belong in
cathedrals and inspire
their choirs. But I am
here called upon to
witness to the fact that
everything in this book
is singable among smaller
worshipping communities,
where volunteer choirs
help lead ordinary
congregations-if there
are such-in
singing.†54 new
hymns, songs and carols
are presented here texts
by a plethora of
well-known writers.

A regal
celebration of a
time-honored hymn is
displayed in this festive
arrangement! Classic
brass motives define the
introduction, raising the
curtain on a joyful
unison presentation of
the well-known ELLACOMBE
theme. A graceful middle
verse offers a pleasing
contrast of interesting
choral textures, giving
directors an opportunity
for interpretive freedom.
Driving to a climactic
conclusion, the anthem
explodes in a sensational
sonic moment worthy of
cathedral or concert
hall. Score and Parts

These two
introspective pieces are
an interpretation of the
composer's feeling of
peace while meditating at
the Cathedral of
Notre-Dame de Paris. They
are improvisatory in
nature, with melodic
shapes often reflective
of plainsong. Extremely
evocative and attractive.

A cantata
for tenor and chamber
orchestra, with words
from The Well by George
Mackay Brown and a German
translation by Gunther
Bauer Schenk. The
centre-piece of a chamber
orchestra trilogy (see
also Sinfonia Concertante
and Sinfonietta
Accademica) and is a
symphonic song-cycle in
five continuous
movements. The text
ponders the influence of
modern times on ancient
ways of life. Into The
Labyrinth is the second
of a set of three works
for chamber orchestra
written in 1982-3, and is
the only one using voice.
The first performance
took place in June 1993
in St. Magnus' Cathedral,
Orkney, as part of the
St. Magnus Festival. It
was given by Neil Mackie
and the Scottish Chamber
Orchestra conducted by
James Conlon. Score
(miniature). Duration c.
31mins.
Here is an
anthem with fresh
perspective and
innovative musical
elements. Unfolding
slowly, this
impressionistic tone poem
marries text and music
with great care and
elegance. The lyric
comparison of creation to
a sanctuary is unique
but, when joined with the
composer's palette of
compositional colors, the
result is an anthem of
great scope and beauty.
Praiseworthy!

This work
is based on the biblical
story of the martyrdom of
Saint Stephen,
traditionally regarded as
the first Christian
martyr, asrecounted in
the Acts of the Apostles.
Stephen was a member of
the early Church in
Jerusalem. He was an
inspired and charismatic
preacher, but he aroused
great hostility among the
members of the various
synagogues by his
teachings, and he was
accused of blasphemy. At
his trial he looked up to
heaven and declared that
he saw God in his Glory,
with Jesus standing at
his right hand. This so
enraged the authorities
that he was flung from
the city and stoned to
death. As he died, he
prayed that the Lord
Jesus would receive his
spirit, and that his
killers would beforgiven.
In this setting the choir
recounts the story in
Latin, whilst the solo
horn music depicts the
violence of the stoning.
The work endswith a
quotation from Chopin's
Ballade No. 2 in F, Op.

Cathedral Chapter of St.
Stephen's Cathedral,

'Still
Falls the Rain' is
perhaps Edith Sitwell's
greatest poem. Maconchy
set the poem for double
choir, unaccompanied,
with some antiphonal
writing. The recurrence
of the phrase 'still
falls the rain'
throughout the poem is
echoed in the music and
helps to give shape and
coherence to it. After
the impassioned and
tragic character of the
main part of the poem, it
ends on a calmer, even
hopeful note (the Dawn
after the Night raids
perhaps). It was
commissioned by the
Chelmsford Festival and
first performed there on
22 May 1985 by the BBC
singers, conducted by
John Poole, in Chelmsford
Cathedral.
