“Polish
Dance†is his
best-known work. Written
in the style of a

ritardandos and rubatos

three-note chords ensure
delightful melodic and

Developing
a Jazz Language, is the
sixth volume of Jerry
Bergonzi's series, Inside
Improvisation. Learning a
language requires
listening on many levels
to the meanings, the
sounds, the intentions,
and the inflections or
nuances of the language.
The first chapters of
this volume on learning
the language of jazz
focus on the
prerequisites of chord
scales, approach notes to
chord tones and target
notes, scale motives and
sequences, and
lines. Part two
qualifies improvisational
techniques into three
areas; melodic, harmonic
and sonic (rhythmic
devices are the focus of
Vol. IV, Melodic Rhythms)
and it is designed as a
menu of soloing devices
from which you can select
your personal course of
study. Over 100 specific
devices are discussed and
conceptualized so as to
give the improviser more
depth of expression and a
greater well from which
to draw ideas. Among the
numerous topics presented
are: guide tones, voice
leading, chord
substitutions, three
tonic system for
composition, tritonics,
hexatonics, tonal
expansions, whole tone
playing, augmented
symmetric scales, double
diminished scales,
limited range and large
range playing, shapes,
blues melodies, accents,
comping as a soloing
device, common tones,
articulations, laying

book includes free

of twelve standard chord
progressions, each played
in two different
tempos.

Bruch succeeded in
composing an impressive
setting of the well known
Advent text, O Heiland,

Saviour, tear open the

it is extremely
sophisticated in its

combines both the choir

Bruch succeeded in
composing an impressive
setting of the well known
Advent text, O Heiland,
reiss die Himmel auf (O
Saviour, tear open the
heavens). Compositionally
it is extremely
sophisticated in its
construction; Bruch
combines both the choir
and orchestra in a
powerfully expressive and
moving portrayal of
mankind waiting for the
coming of the Saviour.
Following the premiere of
the work in 1869 it was
celebrated as Bruch's
most important choral

Naji Hakim,
born in Beirut in 1955,
is one of the most
important organists and
organ composers of today.
He studied with Jean
Langlais as well as at
the Paris Conservatoire,
was organist at
Sacre-Coeur in Paris from
1985-93 and later
succeeded Messiaen as
organist at the Eglise de
la Sainte Trinite. He
gives concerts all over
the world, is professor
at the Conservatoire of
Boulogne and visiting
professor at the Royal
Academy in London.'Set me
as a seal upon your
heart' sets one of the
best-known texts from
King Solomon's Song to
music. The expressive
vocal setting for mixed
a-cappella choir is
suitable for sacred and
secular concerts. Of the
same piece, Hakim also
composed a version for
solo soprano and organ
(ED 20808).

Biber's
Requiem in F minor is
amongst the most
impressive settings of
the Requiem Mass of the
17th century. The exact
reason for the
composition of the
Requiem, which can be
dated to 1692, is not
known. The dark key color
of F minor is emphasized
by the instrumental
scoring for two violins,
three violas, basso
continuo and three
trombones (colla parte
with the chorus). The
vivid language of the
Requiem text offered
Biber a wealth of
possibilities for
expressive, musical
interpretation. The
intensity of the musical
language used to portray
lamenting and mourning is
impressive. In the course
of publication of the
Biber Requiem,
surprisingly the primary
source, which until now
had been thought to be
missing, resurfaced and
the edition could be
prepared based on this
astonishing discovery.
This is a work of
mid-level difficulty for
a choir and with the
clear disposition of the
string parts it is well
suited for performance by
amateur choirs. Score and
part available separately
