major. English. Alfred,
Lord Tennyson
(1809-1892). The
beauty in Alfred, Lord
Tennysons poem is
reflected by the music
with the use of text
painting. The piano
creates the sound of
moving water in m. 19,
providing the first
instance of text
painting. When the men
enter, they continue this
idea of the ocean tide
while the descent into
the word deep in m. 27
gives another instance of
text painting. Take
advantage of the minor
second suspension on the
word dark in m. 38 in
order to achieve a
feeling of suspense. The
entrance at m. 41 is
full, and while still
minor, the text gives us
hope for a change. The
change comes in m. 45
with the staggered
entrances creating a
sense of building and
ascent until the climax
of this moment at m. 47
on the word embark, which
is to be an ascent to
Heaven. The melody moves
between voice parts, even
as early as m. 14 where
the altos have the melody
for only a single
measure; it is then
handed back to the
sopranos. From mm. 5764,
the altos trade the
melody back and forth
with the sopranos. Take
note that the alto melody
should be brought out,
but the line does not
actually begin until the
word when. Lastly, be
intentional with syllabic
stress (no two eighth
notes or quarter notes
alike) and to give
direction to any note
longer than a quarter. I
hope you enjoy learning

This
composition was based on
the world-famous novel by
the French author Jules
Verne. This novel
describes the attempt to
reach the centre of the
earth. The descent of the
crater of the volcano
called Snaeffels,
situated in Iceland,
marks thebeginning of
this voyage to the
sublunary world. The
German geologist,
professor Lidenbrock, is
accompanied on this trip
by his nephew Axel and an
Icelandic guide named
Hans. The last mentioned
will be helpful in many
occasions.
Dark
colors & mist
The
composer tried in this
single work to give a
musical expression to
various significant
moments from this novel.
In the introduction he
sketches an image of the
dismal ambience on the
island by using dark
colors. Risingfragments
of mist reveal the flanks
of the monumental
mountain Scataris. The
composer tries to catch
this image in a majestic
and broad
chorale.
Away
from Iceland
Subsequently the ostinato
rhythmicity and
virtuosity representthe
hectic descent of the
crater of the volcano.
The party descends ever
more and more and travels
south, away from Iceland.
On the way, they see all
kinds of rock formations,
fossils and minerals. At
a depth of thirty hours
walking distance, atabout
150 kilometers below the
surface, they reach a sub
terrestrial sea which is
called the Lidenbrock
sea.
Genuine
eruption of
sounds
Strange
electric manifestations
and unpredictable weather
conditions accompany
thissingular phenomenon.
An orchestral
tutti-episode expresses
this impression
musically. On a
make-shift raft, the
party continues its
voyage, heading to the
south coast of this huge
sea. Once ashore, an
enormous rock obstructs
the passage. The
blowingup of this
obstacle unleashes a
genuine eruption of
sounds in the
orchestration.
Spat out by the
volcano
But the
explosion has an
unforeseen side effect.
The sea - travelers and
raft included - is sucked
upwards into a dark
hole.Again, our heroes
are accompanied on their
involuntary voyage, while
left to fend for
themselves, by an ever
increasing ostinato
rhythmicity.
Before an irruption can
destroy the raft, the
threesome manages to
escape and climb up
through acave towards the
daylight. They seem to be
spat out by the Stromboli
volcano on the island of
Sicily, far from home.
The composition ends
with triumphant sounds
that represent the
scientific triumph of
these
adventurers.

Garrop began hiking in
northern
Colorado’s Rocky
Mountain National Park in
her early 20s. From the
start, she was drawn to a
jagged stretch of rock
formations linking Longs
Peak to Pagoda Mountain,
at over 13,000 feet.
These formations are
called the
“Keyboard of the
Winds,†as their
thin, spindly peaks
suggest splintered keys
of an old, broken piano.
Inspired by one
particular journey the
composer took through the
Keyboard of the Winds en
route to Pagoda’s
summit, this work is a
tribute to the Keyboard
of the Winds. Its fast,
whirling gestures depict
swirling clouds above,
and the musical high
points represent a hiker
reaching the peak of
Pagoda Mountain. These
sections are set in
contrast with quiet,
introspective material
embodying the hiker
quietly surveying the
grandeur and beauty of
the valley below, as well
as the soaring pinnacle
of Longs Peak
overhead. I began
hiking in the Rocky
Mountain National Park in
northern Colorado when I
was in my early twenties.
RMNP is home to some of
the most gorgeous
mountains in North
America, encompassing
265,000 acres of
wilderness, flora, and
fauna. Among the
park’s numerous
summits is Longs Peak, a
mountain that is 14,259
feet high (the highest in
the region). From my
earliest days of hiking,
I was drawn to Longs
Peak, as well as to a
jagged stretch of rock
formations that link
Longs Peak to Pagoda
Mountain (which stands at
13,497 feet). These
formations are called the
Keyboard of the Winds, as
their thin, spindly peaks
loosely suggest the
splintered keys of an
old, broken piano.One
summer, I made the ascent
to Pagoda Mountain using
a route that took me
along the right side of
the Keyboard of the
Winds. My hiking partner
and I started up the
trail in the pre-dawn
hours, and the weather
was stormy. Dawn had
broken by the time we
reached the base of the
Keyboard, but its peaks
were still surrounded by
clouds. As we climbed
higher and higher, the
Keyboard’s thin
spires became visible,
along with the top of
Pagoda Mountain. We
reached the summit of
Pagoda, admired the view
(what we could see
through the clouds), and
made our descent.My piece
is a tribute to the
Keyboard of the Winds.
The fast, whirling
gestures depict swirling
clouds, and the musical
high points represent a
hiker reaching the peaks
of the Keyboard. I have
contrasted these sections
with quiet, introspective
material; these embody
the hiker quietly
surveying the grandeur
and beauty of the valley
below (on a cloudless
day), as well as the
soaring pinnacles of
Longs Peak and Pagoda
Mountain overhead. $18.99 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 1 to 2 weeks

€™s succinct movement
titles (I. Here, II.
Open, III. Stark, IV.
Ardent) tease at
revealing the grand and
heartfelt inspiration for
exuberant romanticism in
this sonata-like work of
symphonic proportions and
depth. Charles Gibb is
both an accomplished
pianist and an
award-winning flutist,
who has written of this
compelling major addition
to the literature:
“This work is a
journey. What journey and
whose journey does not
matter. It is my journey,
it is your journey. It is
the journey of those who
came before us, and of
those who will come after
us. I wrote this hoping
that we can find each
other along the road, so
we can realize that we
don’t need to go
on the journey
alone.â€
Gibb’s DUO is sure
to become a favorite
major work for flute
recitalists. This work
is a journey. What
journey and whose journey
does not matter. It is my
journey, it is your
journey. It is the
journey of those who came
before us, and of those
who will come after us. I
wrote this hoping that we
can find each other along
the road, so we can
realize that we
don’t need to go
on the journey
alone.“Hereâ€
begins with three notes
that shape the rhythmic
and harmonic content of
the entire work. Melodies
and harmonies including
the tonic, dominant, and
leading tone can be found
in each of the four
movements. The first
moments of this movement
introduce the melody,
offering itself
unencumbered and
uninhibited. It shows
itself as it is. The
melodies soar, the
harmonies become voiced
more intricately, and the
opening theme repeats in
full grandeur. The
momentum slows down, and
the movement ends with a
sense of completion, yet
remains unbalanced.A
striking piano gesture
launches
“Open,†the
idea of instability
reflected with the
flowing flute trills and
unclear meter patterns in
the piano. The sensation
of an unsteady grace in
5/8 time arrives with a
piano ostinato. The
melody is expressive, yet
insecure and unbalanced
due to changing meters.
After a grand pause, the
movement transitions to
4/4 time with the flute
switching between duplet
and triplet flourishes.
After a rapid descent in
the flute, the opening
gesture returns, changed
and abruptly
interrupted.The third
movement,
“Stark,†is
very static, beginning
plainly but markedly. The
falling fifth calls out
continually throughout
the movement, searching,
lost. Melodies appear in
pieces, some smooth and
flowing, others rather
disjunct. The piece
climaxes with a line of
mournfulness, yet
revealing a deeper
strength through intense
projection of tone in the
high register. However,
the static harmonies
return, this time
unsteady all the way to
its foundation. This
destabilization repeats,
and then quietly
recedes.“Ardentâ
is the longest of the
movements and spans a
wide range of musical
emotion. Part of the
movement is fast paced,
energetic, and balances
order and disarray.
However, once the chaos
dies down, a gentle,
expressive theme comes
in. The theme itself is
very resolute; it is
order appearing from the
pandemonium. Conflict
returns, and order and
chaos become less
distinguishable from one
another, and soon fuse
together. However, order
returns with new meaning,
synthesized with previous
musical content, creating
a truer, deeper sense of
awareness or
understanding. A moment
of ambiguity arises, but
the flute persists,
supported by the
sensitive but firm
figuration in the piano,
and resoundingly comes to
a close, unburdened and
at ease. $29.99 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 24 hours - In Stock

This
composition was based on
the world-famous novel by
the French author Jules
Verne. This novel
describes the attempt to
reach the centre of the
earth. The descent into
the crater of the volcano
called Snaeffels,
situated in Iceland,
marks the beginning of
this voyage to the
sublunary world.
De compositie
'Voyage au centre de la
terre ....' is gebaseerd
op de wereldberoemde
roman van de Franse
schrijver Jules Verne.
Het boek beschrijft de
poging het middelpunt van
de aarde te bereiken. Een
afdaling van de op
IJslandgesitueerde
vulkaankrater 'de
Sneffels', markeert het
begin van deze reis in
het ondermaanse. De
Duitse geoloog professor
Lidenbrock wordt hierbij
vergezeld door zijn
neefje Axel en een
IJslandse gids genaamd
Hans. Laatstgenoemdezal
in menig netelige
situatie nog van pas
komen.
De
componist heeft getracht
in dit eendelige werk een
aantal significante
momenten uit deze roman
te verklanken. In de
inleiding wordt door
middel van donkere
kleureneen beeld
geschetst van de desolate
sfeer op het eiland.
Optrekkende flarden nevel
onthullen de flanken van
de monumentale berg 'de
Scartaris'. De componist
tracht dit beeld te
vangen in een majestueus,
breed opgezet
koraal. Vervolgens
staan ostinate ritmiek en
virtuositeit voor de
hectische afdaling in de
vulkaankrater. De
groep daalt dieper en
dieper af, en reist
daarbij zuidwaards, weg
van IJsland. Onderweg
komen ze allerlei
rotsformaties,fossielen
en mineralen tegen. Op
een diepte van 'dertig
uur gaans', op ca. 150
km. diepte, bereikt het
gezelschap een
onderaardse zee die 'de
Lidenbrockzee' genoemd
wordt. Vreemd
aandoende electrische
verschijnselen
enonvoorspelbare
weersomstandigheden
vergezellen dit
zonderlinge fenomeen. In
een orkestrale
tutti-episode wordt deze
indruk verklankt. Op
een provisorisch gebouwd
vlot vervolgt het groepje
hun reis, daarbij
koersend naar dezuidkust
van deze enorme zee.
Eenmaal aan wal gekomen
verspert een enorm
rotsblok verdere
doorgang. Het
opblazen van dit obstakel
ontketent een ware
klankeruptie in het
orkest. Echter, de
ontploffing heeft een
onvoorzien
neveneffect.

50th anniversary, the
Flute Society of
Washington commissioned
Daniel Dorff to compose a
celebratory work for
large flute ensemble, to
premiere en masse at its
2016 convention. Dorff
responded with Fireworks,
a 5-minute dazzler scored
for 2 piccolos, 4 C
flutes, 2 altos, 2
basses, and 1 contrabass.
In describing performance
of Fireworks, Dorff says:
Real pyrotechnic
fireworks typically shoot
upward quickly and
neatly, pop at the top,
and then cascade downward
slowly in a beautifully
out-of-sync descent.
Fireworks has many
passages musically
depicting this crisp
upward whoosh exploding
into downward sprinkles,
often punctuated by a pop
at the
top. PERFORMANCE
SUGGESTIONS1) FIREWORKS
may be performed by any
size ensemble ranging
from 11 soloists up to a
large festival choir. It
may be preferable to keep
the piccolos at one
player per part even when
the other parts have
multiple players.2) Real
pyrotechnic fireworks
typically shoot upward
quickly and neatly, pop
at the top, and then
cascade downward slowly
in a beautifully
out-of-sync descent.
FIREWORKS has many
passages musically
depicting this crisp
upward whoosh exploding
into downward sprinkles,
often punctuated by a pop
at the top.3) All
dynamics are relative to
the whole blend, and some
performance situations
may require attention and
adjustments to keep the
balance as notated.4) The
“puh†effect
with x-shaped noteheads
in the Bass and
Contrabass parts is a
beatbox technique
sounding similar to
pizzicato. There is
naturally-produced flute
pitch along with the
percussive attack.5)
“Like tolling
bells†(bar 191
onward) indicates a rapid
decay of each note, like
church bells.This will
help the antiphonal echo
beginning in bar 195, and
the seating placement may
also enhance the
antiphonal effect. $32.99 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 1 to 2 weeks

of Magdeburg, born around
1207, died around 1282 in
the monastery of Helfta
near Eisleben, lived and
worked as a Beguine in
Magdeburg for about 40
years. Born in a castle
in the vicinity of the
city, she joined the
poverty movement when she
was about 20 years old
and chose the descent
from the castle to the
city. She is known to
this day for her book The
Flowing Light of the
Godhead, which she wrote
in Low German, the
language of the people
and the poor. Here, the
bridal mysticism of the
Old Testament Song of
Songs combines with the
poetry of courtly
minnesong to create a new
poetic creation that
gives her immediate
experience of God an
outwardly tangible form.
Mechthild's book is
considered the most
important example of
German-language mysticism
before Meister
Eckhart.Weakened by
hostility and illness,
she retired to Helfta
Monastery around 1270.
Here she wrote or
dictated the last chapter
of her book - and
experienced an unexpected
bloom of old age! $37.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 3 to 4 weeks

No. 6 for orchestra,

Program Note:... with the
Lord a day is like a
thousand years, and a
thousand years is like a
day(New Testament, 2
Peter 3:8)My SYMPHONY NO.
6 was commissioned by the
Danish National Radio
Symphony Orchestra, the
Gteborg Symphony
Orchestra and the Oslo
Philharmonic Orchestra,
to be premiered at the
millenium 2000.The
subtitle AT THE END OF
THE DAY can be understood
literally or it can mean
when all is added up.
However, in my opinion,
nothing ever quite adds
up, there is always
something missing, any
ending will be
provisional ...This
symphony appears to end
only a few minutes into
the first movement, the
first passage, as the
music fades away to
almost-silence, after a
start of flying colours.
But then there is still
something, a small motive
(first heard in the
initial sound-waves)
which reappears,
hesitant, but persistent,
and this embryo is what
leads on the musical
progression. An agitated
section of many
instrumental voices comes
next, until all the
voices become obsessed
with the same phrase, a
see-saw motive based on
thirds. This section
evolves into almost
martial ferocity, when
broken off by a tutti
descent into an extreme
bass-world (a bass-world
which actually permeates
the whole symphony,
emplyoing instruments
that I have never used
before: double-bass tuba,
double-bass trombone,
double-bass clarinet, and
bass flute).The second
movement, the second
passage, apparently takes
off where the first
passage ended, but now
the events are more
ambiguous, and the same
music may be perceived as
fast-moving one moment
and slow-moving the next.
This section is a kind of
passacaglia, the
characteristic baroque
bass-variation.Without a
break follows the third
and last passage, in a
contrasting high
register. The music is
rhythmically knotty as
well as freely flowing.
As in the beginning of
the symphony, a
never-ending descent or
fall breaks off the
events, and at the very
end a delta of new
beginnings, of other
worlds, is revealed
....The symphony is
dedicated to Helle, my
wife. - Per Norgard. $125.50 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks

is a tour de force
symphonic rhapsody that
is built on three
Scandinavian folk songs.
Composer Carl Strommen
has composed these
Viking-influenced
melodies into a concert
setting that brings out
all of the history of the
Scandinavian people. The
piece is at times bold
and aggressive, at other
times beautiful. Carl
employs all of the
instrumental colors of
the concert band to
create a new work for
more advanced
ensembles. Modern
Scandinavians are
descendants of the
Vikings, an adventuresome
people who were known for
their love of the sea,
their naval prowess, and
as fierce fighters . The
Scandinavian Vikings were
warriors from Denmark,
Norway, and Sweden who
traded, raided and
settled in various parts
of Europe, Russia, the
North Atlantic islands,
and the northeastern
coast of North America
.Starting around 1850,
over one million Swedes
left their homeland for
the United States in
search of religious
freedom and open farm
land . Augustana College

graduates of Swedish
universities and is

Augustana College is the
oldest Swedish- American
institution of higher
learning in the United
States . This powerful
and lively piece takes
inspiration from Swedish
history and from Swedish
folk songs and hymns
.Havsdrake (Dragon of the
Sea)The Nordanvind or
“North Windâ€
blows a cold wind during
a journey of a group of
courageous Viking rowers
. The
“Dragon-shipâ€
or long ships designed
for raiding and war was a
sophisticated, fast ship
able to navigate in very
shallow water . To
musically portray these
magnificent seafaring
vessels, the director is
encouraged to use an
Ocean Drum (or a rain
stick) during the
introduction . Wind
players may consider
blowing air through their
instruments to suggest
the North wind . Adding
men’s voices to
accompany the haunting
low brass and percussive
“rowerâ€
sounds can be helpful in
creating the dark and
ominous portrayal of
Viking adventurers
.Slangpolska efter Byss -
KalleIn Sweden, a
“polska†is a
partner dance where the
dancers spin each other
(släng in Swedish
“to sling or
tossâ€) .
Slangpolska efter Byss -
Kalle is attributed to
Byss-Kalle, who was a
notable Swedish folk
musician, specifically a
nyckelharpa player .
Slangpolska efter Byss -
Kalle is a traditional
“polskaâ€
dance song most often
played on the Nyckelharpa
or keyed fiddle and is
commonly heard in pubs
and at festive events
throughout Sweden .
Approximately 10,000
nyckelharpa players live
in Sweden today, and the
Swedish and the American
Nyckelharpa Associations
are dedicated to this
Swedish National
instrument . The director
is encouraged to share
video and audio examples
of the nyckelharpa
playing the original

Kalle .Tryggare Kan Ingen
Vara (Children of the
Heavenly Father)Tryggare
Kan Ingen Vara Is a
traditional Swedish
melody, possibly of
German roots, and was
believed to be arranged
as a hymn by the Swedish
hymn writer, Karolina
Wilhelmina Sandell-Berg
(1832–1903) . As a
daughter of a Swedish
Lutheran minister, she
began writing poems as a
teenager and is said to
have written over 1,700
different texts . There
are two different
accounts as to the
inspiration for this hymn
. The first story is that
Lina (as she was called)
wrote the hymn to honor
her father and to say
thank you to him for
raising her and
protecting her . A second
belief is of her
witnessing the tragic
death of her father . She
and her father were on a
boat, when a wave threw
her father overboard . It
was said that the
profound effect of
watching her father drown
is what caused Lina to
write the text to this
hymn . Although this is a
treasured song to people
of Swedish descent
everywhere, it speaks to
all people about a father
tending and nourishing
his children, and
protecting them from evil
