alluring sound, emulating
the human voice. In
Persian literature, the
Ney is considered a
mystic instrument capable
of expressing deep human
emotions. In writing my
flute concerto, I aimed
not only to highlight the
modern flautist's ability
to play agile and
brilliant passages but
also to emulate the
delicate sound of the

extended solo flute

characters permeate the
first movement of my

in the score as
lamentoso, and con

and loss, and joy of
living respectively. The
lament is mostly
expressed in several
extended cadenzas for
solo flute while the con
spirito consists of
robust and energetic fast
sections played by all
forces of the orchestra.
Apart from these two
characters there are
moments of mystery,
comedy and the grotesque,
among others. In the
second movement, the
lyrical and poetic
character of the flute is
prominently presented in
dream-like passages
surrounded by shimmering
and tender orchestral
colors. The solo flute is
left out in an agitated
middle section that
references the first
movement. In the third
section of the movement
the solo flute returns in
meditative fashion
culminating in a duet
with the harp. The third
movement is written as
one continuous quasi
scherzo, challenging the
limits of agility and
brilliance of the flute.

from the earlier
movements are presented
again with joyous
character. The coda

When Hearts
Tremble is an emotion
packed piece dedicated to
musician friends lost all
to soon. This beautiful
composition by Brant
Karrick reflects on the
fragility of human
existence, joyous
memories of loved ones
and their effect on
everyone around them, and
maintaining hope for what
the future will hold when
all feels lost. This tour
de force piece perfectly
displays Karrick's
polished compositional
craft with impeccable
scoring, beautiful
melodic writing, and
exceptional
orchestrational
color. While the
day-to-day grind of our
lives can be filled with
overwhelming obligations,
goals and commitments, it
is sometimes very easy to
forget just how precious
and fragile life is . It
is so easy to get caught
up in our own personal
feelings and worries that
we sometimes don’t
realize and appreciate
the many blessings we
have, especially
friendships . On
Wednesday, November 18,
2015 the Jefferson High
School Band in Jefferson,
Georgia lost two of its
members to a fatal car
accident . The victims
were brothers . Music was
a constant part of their
lives, and the boys were
talented percussionists
in the marching band . To
help with the grieving
process the school and
community commissioned
this piece to celebrate
the lives of William and
Alex Trimble .As a
father, I cannot imagine
losing a child, let alone
two, and beginning this
piece was very difficult
as I felt extreme
anguish, especially for
the parents . But it was
decided the piece should
primarily reflect the
enthusiasm, youthful
spirits and positive
influence these two young
men demonstrated as they
were deeply loved by
their band mates,
community and family .
There are four main
themes, each representing
the feelings and emotions
that are certain to occur
after a loss of loved
ones . The first theme is
a short, introductory
fanfare, strong and bold,
to stand for courage . A
second dance-like melody
features a liltingly
mixed meter to portray a
youthful and carefree
innocence . This soon
changes into a third more
song-like, and stately
theme intended to provide
encouragement as we move
forward through life .The
middle of the piece
includes a soft
transition as two snare
drummers give voice to
the boys, allowing them
to thank their friends
and assuring them that it
will be okay . This moves
directly into a slow
melody introduced by the
saxophones (Alex, the
younger brother was also
a saxophonist) and is a
time for reflection and
allows for feelings of
sadness at losing beloved
friends . However, a
second statement of the
same theme, now at full
volume with a strong
percussion cadence,
intends to lift the
spirits and allows all
friends to unite in
joyous celebration of
life . Both the
enthusiastic dance theme
and stately lyrical theme
return, now in different
keys, and work their way
toward the highly
energetic burst of
glorious sound in the
short and wild coda .
When Hearts Tremble was
written to celebrate the
joys of youth and life,
and should remind us that
our friends and loved
ones are precious, and we
should live each day to
bring more joy into the
world and into the lives
of others .

a chord with Matheson,

complexity. Matheson
chose seven Dugan poems,

Bachâs
colossal Partita No. 2
for Solo Violin has been
crowned by many masters
as one of musicâs
greatest achievements,
and even its famous
Chaconne movement alone
is a mountain many
performers dare not
scale. While the
literature of several
other instruments has
been enriched by
transcriptions of the
Chaconne, Mazzantiâs
heroic adaptation of the
complete Partita is the
culmination of many
yearsâ work, and the
only transcription
specifically for the
piccoloâs unique
range. THE
INSPIRATIONEver since my
childhood, Johann
Sebastian Bachâs
solo violin music (like
his works for solo cello)
has always held a charm
and mystery for me.
Thereâs something
about this repertoire
that sparks an
inextinguishable
questioning in my musical
and human soul.It is
music without spatial
limits or temporal cages,
a music as essential as
it is masterfully
complex, in which the
solitary voice of man
meets the
all-encompassing voice of
God. It is a music whose
vertical and horizontal
dimensions, already
admirably fused, are
faceted into new and
mysterious realities. For
every violinist, the
study of these
compositions is at the
apex of tenacious
technical study and
interpretative
effort.Violinist Joshua
Bell has said the
Ciaccona (Bach did write
the Partitaâs
movement titles in
Italian) is ânot
just one of the greatest
pieces of music ever
written, but one of the
greatest achievements of
any man in history.
Itâs a spiritually
powerful piece,
emotionally powerful,
structurally
perfect.âTranscribin
g and performing
Bachâs PARTITA NO.
2, BWV 1004 on piccolo
was a feat that took
years of work. The famous
Ciaccona movement is, of
course, the piece that
alone occupied most of
this time. How does one
honor and elevate such
high music with such a
âsmallâ
instrument, devoid of the
enormous expressive
potential of the violin,
devoid of its chords and
its polyphony? How might
I transform the piccolo
into an instrument with,
like the violin,
full-bodied low notes and
subtle high notes? Above
all, why undertake such a
demanding and
extraordinary journey?The
first reason is obvious:
by transcribing,
studying, and performing
such an admirable piece,
we assimilate it, it
becomes part of us, it
enormously enriches our
musical interior.In
addition, it forces us
technically to expand the
colors, agility, and
flexibility of the
instrument; it makes us
think in a polyphonic
way.Finally, the daily
study, especially of the
Ciaccona, is an
extraordinary gymnasium
in which to consolidate
and strengthen our
general technique.THE
TRANSCRIPTIONThe whole
Partita was transcribed
in the key of A minor, a
fifth above the original
in D minor. This was
necessary for the lowest
note of the violin (G) to
correspond to the lowest
note of the piccolo (D).
This version exploits the
full range of the
piccolo, from the D of
the first octave to the B
of the third octave.
However some octave
adjustments were
needed.The chords,
particularly in the
Sarabanda and the
Ciaccona, have been left
with the same notational
system used by Bach in
his version for violin. I
chose to respect
Bachâs presentation
and did not transcribe
these into grace notes
breaking the chords. I
advocate that we must at
least try to think of
this music in its
vertical dimension,
trying to make the notes
resonate as if they were
being played together,
deciding the speed of the
arpeggio based on musical
needs.While some woodwind
editions of Bachâs
string solos do indicate
broken chords as grace
notes, this implies that
the most important note
is necessarily the
highest one, while
sometimes it is precisely
in the lower pitches that
the theme is voiced.In
this piccolo adaptation,
many of Bachâs
original articulations
have been respected. Some
have been changed, when
needing to adapt them to
the specific needs of
flute playing.The two
passages in the Ciaccona
where Bach indicates
âarpeggioâ were
rendered trying to
respect the most
consolidated and virtuous
violin traditions, and at
the same time the
possibilities that the
piccolo offers us. For
this purpose, in some
cases, different
revoicings of the chords
have been used.I thank
all those who patiently
listened to me and were
close to me during this
period, for their
observations and advice.
In particular, I thank my
daughter Sara for her
assistance and skill in
entering this edition
into music writing
software.

Cantatas
for secular occasions
repeatedly stimulated
Telemann's sparkling wit
and humor. In The
Schoolmaster, for
example, he depicted a
puffed-up cantor
lecturing his class; in
the Cantata to a Canary
Bird, he evoked the
painful loss of a little
feathered friend; and in
the cantata The Women's
Order TWV 20:49 he
portrayed a young bride
who looks forward to her
future married life with
joyful anticipation. The
text, at times drastic
and coarse, is set to
carefree, joyous music
and is guaranteed to
provoke chuckles. While
some of the arias are
restrained and operatic,
others are joyful and
exuberant. Between them,
our interest is secured
by the short recitatives
and, above all, by the
lullaby. Telemann
masterfully yet
mischievously underlines
and elucidates certain
textual passages with the
music. There are a wealth
of surprising little
effects which are always
a delight. They show that
this work was no doubt
conceived as a serenade
for a wedding ceremony,
whereby one can assume
that the performers acted
out their parts during
the performance.

Flute and
guitar duo, along with
string quartet, perform
three movements based on
Sephardic folk songs. The
common theme is love just
out of reach: the sad
hope of finding love, the
unrequited love for an
older woman, the spurned
love of the unfaithful
(Searching, rejection,
and loss, as Leisner
says). The relevant folk

the third, and are used
as the base for Leisner's
stream-of-conciousness

Spirit was
composed in memory of the
renowned clarinetist
Laura Flax. Laura
commissioned Ran’s
first solo clarinet work,
For an Actor: Monologue
for Clarinet, to premiere
with the Da Capo Chamber
Players in 1978. Ran
returned to the clarinet
in many compositions over
the years, sometimes as a
lead instrument and at
other times as an
important voice, yet
always inspired by
Laura’s rich
sound, blazing technique,
and the “brain and
guts†that she
brought to her playing.
As a memorial, Spirit is
not about absence, but
rather a celebration
displaying a wide range
of emotions, with at
least a tiny glimpse of
Laura’s brilliant
spirit and spiritedness.
Only in the work’s
final stretch does the
sense of parting and loss
take over. SPIRIT was
composed in memory of
Laura Flax (1952-2017),
the renowned New
York-based clarinetist
and my cherished friend.
Our musical and personal
association began in 1977
when Laura invited me to
compose a solo clarinet
work, For an Actor:
Monologue for Clarinet,
in memory of her mother,
Hazel Flax, whom I had
known.After composing For
an Actor for Laura I came
back to the clarinet in
many of my compositions
over the years, sometimes
as a lead instrument and
at other times as an
important voice. In all
of my clarinet music
Laura is present. The
rich sound, blazing
technique, the
“brain and
guts†that she
brought to her playing,
and her remarkable
person, have inspired me
in so many ways during
the four decades of our
friendship, and beyond.I
did not want Spirit to be
about absence, though. I
wanted the piece to
exhibit a wider range of
emotions, as well as
capture at least a tiny
glimpse of Laura’s
brilliant spirit and
spiritedness. Only in the
work’s final
stretch does the sense of
“parting,â€
and of loss, take
over.Upon completing
Spirit on October 21,
2017 I found myself
compelled to add at the
bottom of the score the
words “To Laura,
always in my
heart,†as though
in an effort to reach
out, for a brief moment,
and touch the
unreachable.—Shula
mit Ran.
