BWV 197 was probably
written in the second
half of the 1730s for a
wedding, no further
details of which are
known. In the opening
chorus in particular, it
features quite a sizeable
orchestra. The text of
the cantata has one major
theme - trust in God! In
a magnificent lullaby
(movement 3) all cares
are sung to sleep. The
other arias, with their
exceptionally exquisite
combinations of scorings,
make the cantata into a
quite special work,
albeit one which is
associated with a
particular occasion. The
wedding cantata BWV 197
draws on older material
for some of its
movements. Two movements
are parodies on arias
from the incomplete
surviving Christmas
cantata Ehre sei Gott in
der Hohe, BWV 197a,
including the lullaby O
du angenehmes Paar, of
which only the last
quarter survives from the
Christmas cantata - it is
O du angenehmer Schatz
there. By using the later
version, Diethard
Hellmann has been able to
reconstruct the original
version of this dreamlike
beautiful movement;
however, the complete
Christmas cantata cannot
be reconstructed from the

unaccompanied duos - have
been known to us from the
fifteenth century
onwards. So quite early
on it was customary tu
practise this type of
musical exercise, which
later, especially during
the Romantic period,
achieved great popularity
as the duo or duett.
Equal numbers of this
sort of instrumental duo
were composed for nearly
all wind and string
instruments. On the other
hand, only a small amount
of compositions for two
trumpets have come down
to us. In order to play
any music which
progresses beyond pure
fanfare on a natural
(valueless) trumpet, it
is necessary to make use
of the clarion register
(the top third of the
natural harmonic). And if
such a melody is to be
accompanied by a second
part, only the few
natural notes lying below
it are left, or else this
high register itself,
which calls for great
virtuosity on the part of
the trumpeter. As well as
this, we must remember
the fact that
trumpet-playing was only
allowed for the
trumpeters of a royal
court, army, staff, or
for the field-trumpeter
of a prince, plus a few
council, city, and church
musicians, who were bound
by strict guild and
corporation rules. Thus
in spite of the
preference for its
festive sound, the spread
and handing down of
trumpet music was almost
reduced to nothing under
these circumstances. As
well as this, pride of
place and profession
rivalry and envy amongst
musicians contributed in
large part. In England
the situation was
somewhat freer. Here
pretty little trumpet
duos originated,
including, amongst
others, those written by
Handel for his
master-trumpeter Valentin
Snow and the Royal
Sergeant-trumpeters of
the Shore family. An
especially happy
exception was the diocese
of Olmiitz. Here there
was a capable group of
musicians of the chapel
royal with the
brilliantly talented
group of trumpeters and
the field-trumpeter Pavel
Vajvanovsky, who also
composed himself. These
trumpeters in the service
of his prince-bishop
played many sacred and
secular pieces, all for
several instruments. It
was for them also that
Heinrich Ignaz Franz
Biber wrote the 12 double
trumpet sonatas we
present here. On the
other hand, the
representatives of the
authorities in Germany
ensured strict
observation of all edicts
and regulations. Even the
celebrated Bach-trumpeter
and towm-piper Gottfried
Reiche was never allowed
to be portrayed with a
proper trumpet due to the
priveleges of court and
field trumpeters. In
order to represent him as
one of the greatest
masters of his time and
art, however, the painter
placed an instrument
similar to a
corno-di-caccia in his
hand, together with a
sheet with a small piece
for virtuoso clarion.
When we try in spite of
these difficulties and
adverse circumstances to
gather a collection of
musically valuable and
characteristic examples
of popular pieces for two
trumpets from the
seventeenth and
eighteenth centuries, it
is in the first, place in
order to acquaint modern
trumpeters with something
of the wealth of music,
which can also be well
played on a modern
trumpet with valves. The
originally used trumpets
correspond to modern ones
in the keys of C and D,
but this does not mean
that many of the pieces
cannot be transposed to a
more comfortable
register. On top of this,
we have tried to give a
picture of the baroque
court and field
trumpeter, as well as of
the mysterious clarion
trumpeter, with the help
of musically popular
material. The origin of
most of the pieces used
is no longer clearly
discernable. In most
cases we possess second-
or third-hand copies
which have been handed
down, and show signs of
frequent use. A few cases
where modernization of
the second part obviously
did not take place until
the invention of stops,
have been re-shaped into
their supposed original
form. A series of further
dynamic details were
left, and marked as
optional suggestions in

the Phaeacian shore after
a shipwreck, Odysseus is
introduced to King
Alcinous. As he sits in
the palace, he tells the
Phaeacians of his
wanderings since leaving
Troy. Odysseus and his
men fi rst landed on the
island of the Cicones
wherethey sacked the city
of Ismarus. From there,
great storms swept them
to the land of the
hospitable Lotus Eaters.
Then they sailed to the
land of the Cyclopes.
Odysseus and twelve of
his men entered the cave
of Polyphemus. After the
single-eyed giantmade
handfuls of his men into
meals, Odysseus fi nally
defeated him. He got him
drunk and once he had
fallen asleep, he and his
men stabbed a glowing
spike into the
Cyclop’s single
eye, completely blinding
him. They escaped by
clinging to the belliesof
some sheep. Once aboard,
Odysseus taunted the
Cyclop by revealing him
his true identity.
Enraged, Polyphemus
hurled rocks at the ship,
trying to sink it. After
leaving the
Cyclopes’ island,
they arrived at the home
of Aeolus, ruler of the
winds.Aeolus off ered
Odysseus a bag trapping
all the strong winds
within except one - the
one which would take him
straight back to Ithaca.
As the ship came within
sight of Ithaca, the
crewmen, curious about
the bag, decided to open
it. The winds escapedand
stirred up a storm.
Odysseus and his crew
came to the land of the
cannibalistic
Laestrygonians, who sank
all but one of the ships.
The survivors went next
to Aeaea, the island of
the witch-goddess Circe.
Odysseus sent out a
scouting party butCirce
turned them into pigs.
With the help of an
antidote the god Hermes
had given him, Odysseus
managed to overpower the
goddess and forced her to
change his men back to
human form. When it was
time for Odysseus to
leave, Circe told him to
sail tothe realm of the
dead to speak with the
spirit of the seer
Tiresias. One
day’s sailing took
them to the land of the
Cimmerians. There, he
performed sacrifi ces to
attract the souls of the
dead. Tiresias told him
what would happen to him
next. He thengot to talk
with his mother,
Anticleia, and met the
spirits of Agamemnon,
Achilles, Patroclus,
Antilochus, Ajax and
others. He then saw the
souls of the damned
Tityos, Tantalus, and
Sisyphus. Odysseus soon
found himself mobbed by
souls. He
becamefrightened, ran
back to his ship, and
sailed away. While back
at Aeaea, Circe told him
about the dangers he
would have to face on his
way back home. She
advised him to avoid
hearing the song of the
Sirens; but if he really
felt he had to hear,
thenhe should be tied to
the mast of the ship,
which he did. Odysseus
then successfully steered
his crew past Charybdis
(a violent whirlpool) and
Scylla (a multiple-headed
monster), but Scylla
managed to devour six of
his men. Finally,
Odysseus and hissurviving
crew approached the
island where the Sun god
kept sacred cattle.
Odysseus wanted to sail
past, but the crewmen
persuaded him to let them
rest there. Odysseus
passed Circe’s
counsel on to his men.
Once he had fallen
asleep, his men
impiouslykilled and ate
some of the cattle. When
the Sun god found out, he
asked Zeus to punish
them. Shortly after they
set sail from the island,
Zeus destroyed the ship
and all the men died
except for Odysseus.
After ten days, Odysseus
was washed up on
theisland of the nymph
Calypso.
Odysseus,

Polyphem das Schiff mit

Odysseus und seine Mannen

und zu befragen. Eine
Tagesreise führt
sie dann ins Land der
Kimmerer, nahe dem
Eingang des Hades. Dort
bringt Odysseus Opfer, um
die Seelen der Toten
anzurufen. Teireisas sagt
ihm sein Schicksal
voraus. Dann darf
Odysseusmit seiner Mutter
Antikleia und den Seelen
von Agamemnon, Achilles,
Patroklos, Antilochus,
Ajax und anderen Toten
sprechen. Dann sieht er
die Seelen der Verdammten
Tityos, Tantalos und
Sisyphos. Bald wird
Odysseus selbst von den
Seelen gequält,
kehrtvoll Angst zu seinem
Schiff zurück und
segelt davon. In Aiaia
hatte Kirke ihn vor den
drohenden Gefahren der
Heimreise gewarnt. Sie
riet ihm, den Gesang der
Sirenen zu vermeiden,
wenn er aber unbedingt
zuhören müsse,
solle er sich an denMast
seines Schiff es bindet
lassen, was er dann auch
tut. Dann führt
Odysseus seine Mannschaft
erfolgreich durch die
Meerenge zwischen Skylla
und Charybdis, wobei
Skylla jedoch sechs
seiner Männer
verschlingt.
Schließlich erreichen
Odysseusund die
überlebende
Besatzung die Insel, auf
der der Sonnengott Helios
heiliges Vieh hält.
Odysseus will
weitersegeln, aber seine
Mannschaft
überredet ihn zu
einer Rast. Odysseus
erzählt ihnen von
Kirkes Warnung, aber
kaum, dass
ereingeschlafen ist,
töten die Männer in
gotteslästerlicher
Weise einige Rinder und
verspeisen sie. Als
Helios dies entdeckt,
bittet er Zeus, sie zu
bestrafen. Kurz nachdem
sie die Segel für
die Abreise von der Insel
gesetzt haben,
zerstört Zeusdas
Schiff und alle außer
Odysseus sterben. Nach
zehn Tagen wird Odysseus
an den Strand der Insel
der Nymphe Kalypso
angespült.

vents. Eole offre Ulysse
un vent favorable pour
regagner Ithaque, et une
outre renfermant tous les
vents contraires.
Hélas, la curiosité
des marins
d’Ulysse aura
raison de cet heureux
dénouement car, en
ouvrant l’outre,
les vents contraires
s’échappent et
déchaînent une
nouvelle tempête.
Après avoir
dérivé plusieurs
jours, ils parviennent
chez les Lestrygons
cannibales qui
détruisent
l’escadre. Les
survivants reprennent la
mer avec un unique navire
et abordent dans
l’île
d’Aiaié,
séjour de la
magicienne Circé.
Ulysse envoie des
éclaireurs dans les
terres. Imprudemment
entrés dans la demeure
de la magicienne, ils
sont transformés en

of Muzio Clementi
(1752-1832) spanned the
lives of both Mozart and
Beethoven and was
exceptionally diverse. It
encompassed performing on
the keyboard, conducting,
teaching, business
activities and
composition in the realms
of keyboard, chamber and
orchestral music. This
book focuses on
Clementi’s keyboard
sonatas and aims to shed
new light on their
relationship with the
complex cross-currents of
late eighteenth-century
musical style, both in
England, where Clementi
was active for much of
his career, and the
continent, which he
visited
periodically. The
first chapter summarises
Clementi’s
historical reputation as
it developed in the
nineteenth and twentieth
centuries, and evaluates
the impact on it of the
significant developments
in Clementi scholarship
since 2000. The aim is to
stress the deficiencies
of the established view
of Clementi as a keyboard
pedagogue and to stress
the importance of
liberating him as much as
possible from this
ingrained perception.
This is attempted, in the
remaining chapters,
through close, analytical
readings of a variety of
keyboard sonatas from all
stages of his career,
comparing them with a
range of works by Haydn,
Mozart, Beethoven and
other contemporaries such
as Jan Ladislav Dussek
(1760-1812). The
comparisons are made from
the perspectives of
distinguishing features
of Clementi’s style
such as his unusually
intense deployment of
strict counterpoint in
the later keyboard
sonatas; his cultivation
of irregularity in
recapitulations; his use
of the
‘three-key’
exposition in the
middle-to-later stages of
his career that seems to
anticipate
nineteenth-century
developments, and also
his assimilation of
heightened virtuosity
into the earlier sonatas,
often in the form of
cadenzas more suggestive
of the keyboard concerto
a genre Clementi
seems, rather strangely,
to have neglected. The
book has been envisaged
as a direct response, not
only to the most recent
scholarship on Clementi,
but also to current
approaches to
eighteenth-century music
in general, including the
interdisciplinary work of

important musical
production by Nicolò
Paganini for violin and
guitar is now increased
to a small but
significant degree with
the publication of the
Sei piccoli Valtz
(the title is not the
composer’s). They
are brief but very
pleasing pieces, in which
it is easy to perceive
the spirit with which the
great Genoese musician
wrote his short
compositions. These
are autograph
compositions, where the
instrumental indication
(violin) is present only
at the sixth. They could
be considered almost
‘musical
jottings’ found in
two manuscript
collections of music for
guitar, the
Ghiribizzi and the
37 Sonate, but
which have never been
transcribed and completed
before now. Their musical
structure is simple, as
is found in this kind of
composition, and is
organised mostly in
bipartite form, except
for the Valtz n. 6
which it is tripartite
(with the Minore
and the Da Capo al
Fine). It is most
likely to be the violin
part of compositions for
violin and guitar, given
the musical
characteristics of the
six pieces, similar to
other music by Paganini
such as the Sei
Cantabili e Valtz
dedicated to Camillo
Sivori. It must not
then be ruled out, given
the numbering allocated
by the composer to the
first five Valtz, that
they might even be the
evidence of a
‘project’
which was perhaps never
completed, or else
finished and lost, of
which in fact only these
