James
Jordan and The Same
Stream should be
commended for this album.
The Same Stream succeeds
in presenting this
collection of
twenty-first century
choral music with a high
degree of technical
accuracy. Their sectional
balance is nearly
perfect, and contains
impeccable intonation.
The performances on this
recording should have a
wide appeal to

These tracks represent
the first full CD of a
new American choral
ensemble: The Same
Stream. The
choir’s very
existence is the living
result of questions
regarding what it means
to sing together within a
deeply
“knittedâ€
community, a community
that shares answers to
commonly held questions
and beliefs about what
creates a truly human
resonance within and
among singers. For me,
this ensemble is a
continuation of beliefs
that have been my North
Star all of my career. To
hear those questions
answered and dreams
become a reality with the
establishment of The Same
Stream choir is deeply
humbling, gratifying and
life affirming. It is our
hope that these
recordings enrich those
who hear them—as
much as making them has
made our lives deeper and
more meaningful. —

The
crisis of dramaturgical
systems in the age of
European modernism,
between the end of the
nineteenth century and
the First World War,
provoked the creation of
a range of original
artistic solutions until
the 1930s which broke
apart traditional musical
genres. The quest for new
forms of expression thus
becomes a defining
feature in modernist art.
Composers, riding the
wave of momentum built
first in literature and
the fine arts, blurred
the boundaries between
high and low styles, and
it is in this
co-existence,
inherent to the new
forms, that musical
production found new
life. Theatre studies
have pinpointed this
desire for artistic
experimentation with
Paris at its centre, the
city of light,
that cultural meeting
ground and formidable
catalyst of artistic
trends. The visual
spectacle produced during
the forty years
(approximately 1890-1930)
covered in this volume
has therefore been
analysed in a number of
different ways, deriving
from the vast panorama of
cultural history,
interrogating theatrical
materials not only from
the standpoint of the
<>, but also
by investigating the
links between high and
low, mediatised culture.
Musicological research
applied to high art
genres (song, opera, all
genres of instrumental
music) does not yet seem
to have taken these
hybrid spectacles which
modify forms and genres
in search of new musical
and dramatic solutions
into consideration,
except in a few rare
cases. On the other hand,
new impetus has been
given by a renewed
interest in popular
chanson and ballet. In
this current volume, we
have chosen to
interrogate the
spectacular element, that
is to say the
performance, as 'a
text', equal in status to
the music and the
literary text. Therefore,
the different subject
areas proposed in the
following chapters reveal
a lesser importance of
the subject material set
to music by composers but
a greater willingness, at
the centre of this
aesthetic renewal, to try
out new musical forms or
to adapt traditional
structures to new
dramatic ends.

Armed with
a prodigious gift for
forging musical
identities, “Lord
Carter Nicholas
Pann†presents an
offering inspired by the
Elizabethan Era and an
appreciation for the
works of Percy Grainger.
Pann’s suite tells
a story of palace
intrigue, outlined by the
movement titles:1.
Overture - Young Tom
Abel, Heir to Cecil
Abel’s Fortune2.
Sarabande - Father Daniel
Bennett from the Abbey at
Lockwood Cross3.
Pastorale - Joseph
Dimplesweet, His
Lordship’s Oldest
Farmhand4. Gallop - Lord
William H. Pettybone,
Duke of Bremingham. At
Her Ladyship’s
Request (2016) was an
idea born out of
admiration for the wind
works of Percy Grainger
– most notably his
Lincolnshire Posey.The
names and places here are
all fictitious. Four
countrymen have come
forward at Her
Ladyship’s request
as we commoners (and for
as long as I can
remember) have been led
to believe Her Highness
has grown complacent in
her aged betrothal to His
Lordship.I. It has long
been established in this
hill country that young,
svelte Tom Abel has
caught her fancy eye. He
knocks about with the
swagger of a visiting
dignitary, confident and
cocksure. And then there
is his father’s
fortune. Cecil Abel may
be the richest man in the
land save for His
Lordship. Tom, his only
son, will run his face
straight into that pile
the moment his old man
kicks.II. It is rare to
spy Father Daniel
Bennett, High Priest from
the Abbey at Lockwood
Cross, loitering in our
very own town
square…but not as
of late.III. Is Her
Ladyship so desperate as
to call upon Old Man
Dimplesweet? Were you to
confirm this, I would
have straightened my back
and spit the ground
before you. Then I saw
what could not possibly
be misconstrued. And
where is His Lordship
anyway?IV. Pettybone!
Conniving…
insidious. I don’t
believe there has been a
greater rivalry among men
for generations. The
Duke’s ego alone
could run our nation. The
grudges he grows are
notorious. His mount is
legendary. The day has
come to collect his
toll.

The Quest
of the Magi was one of
the working titles for
John Henry Hopkins Jr.'s
famous carol, We Three
Kings. Written in 1857
for a Christmas pageant
in New York City, We
Three Kings tells the
tale of the Magis'
journey to find a newly
born king in a faraway
land and the precious
gifts they brought with
them. This piece focuses
more on the journey of
following yonder star.
Traveling across many
countries in the first
century was a perilous
task, full of danger,
thievery, and possible
death, not to mention
these men were traveling
with some of the most
precious and expensive
cargo one could possess.
This piece chronicles the
magi acquiring myrrh,
frankincense, and gold
for their journey. Each
treasure is represented
by its own motif and
woven into Hopkins'
original carol.

This work
was commissioned by Susan

written at the request of
tenor Robert White, to
whom it is dedicated. It
was premiered at Alice
Tully Hall on February
17, 1993 by Robert White,
James Galway, the Lark
Quartet and pianist Brian
Zeger. It was actually
Miss Alice Tully's
suggestion that some
settings of Yeats would
be lovely that prompted
me to look at these
poems. I was at once
struck by their intense
lyric beauty and decided
immediately to use them
for this work. The six
poems were chosen from
Yeats' 1899 collection
The Wind Among the Reeds.
Dealing with unrequited
love, these particular
poems have hints of the
mystic preoccupations
which were to become more
prominent in Yeats' later
work. Scored for an
ensemble consisting of
Flute, Piano and String
Quartet, it was my
intention that the beauty
and clarity of the poetry
should be matched by a
directness of musical
expression which would
not overwhelm the poems.
The instrumental writing
makes no attempt at tone
painting but rather
provides a colorful but
often austere
psychological background
to the tenor's melodies
which are at times almost
folk-like in their
simplicity. The work is
unified as a cycle not
only by its tonal
structure, but also
through harmonic and
motivic elements that the
individual songs
share.

Draw
ing from his five decades
of success as a conductor
and educator in the
choral field, Will
Kesling has compiled a
comprehensive choral
methods resource that
addresses every necessary
fundamental for achieving
artistry in the choral
art. Written in clear and
conversational language,
this resource covers:
Building a healthy and
beautiful choral sound
Dealing with vocal issues
Selecting repertoire and
programming concerts
Developing score study
skills and interpretive
insights Understanding
the characteristics of
musical periods and
composers Planning,
preparing for, and
running rehearsals The
Voices I Hear also
explores important but
often overlooked topics,
including a discussion of
performing sacred music
in secular education
settings, techniques for
performing
choral-orchestral works,
choral versus orchestral
conducting, and how to
become a true
“maestro.â€
Individual chapters also
function as standalone
topics of study. A
valuable read for
emerging and seasoned
conductors alike, The
Voices I Hear is an
expert study of the
aesthetic, intellectual,
and practical aspects of
the choral art. Dr. Will
Kesling is Professor of
Choral and Orchestral
Conducting at the
University of Florida,
where he has taught for
two decades. He has
conducted hundreds of
choral ensembles and
nearly fifty of the
world’s finest
symphony orchestras. His
ensembles have received
international attention
for their excellence and
musical expression. Â
Thank you, Dr. Kesling,
for the decade you gave
of yourself to write the
most complete and
comprehensive writing on
the topics of choral
techniques, methods, and
conducting I have seen.
It is in-depth yet
practical, to the point
of being a valuable
resource for both the
young conductors entering
the choral field to the
well-established
professionals. You have
given us a solid
foundation in all
significant areas of the
choral art, including,
among many others, the
production of beautiful
vocal tone, detailed
physical vocal
production, textual and
physical components of
English diction,
repertoire programming,
appropriate style,
interpretation and
phrasing, and a pathway
to successful conducting
of combined choral and
orchestral forces. Your
enormous and highly
successful career, with
worldwide performances
and numerous awards and
honors, has enabled you
to bring validity and
integrity to the entire
writing. —Donald

The Voices I Hear, is the

driving and consuming
passion throughout
Kesling’s life is
the preparation and
performance of the
world’s rich and

the education,
